Wild Company is the tale of how two people left their unsatisfying jobs, created something they really weren't willing or able to nourish, and ultimately lost control of their creation. Their creation lives on, subsumed in a corporation that neither cares about or wants to remember what made the creation great, just one bland face of three.The Ziegler's both worked in journalism but were unsatisfied with their jobs. They stumbled into running a clothing chain due to a combination of luck, skill (art and writing, as well as an excellent eye for design) and serendipity. The book tells of many highs (finding bargains, excellent sales, extreme customer loyalty) and lows (they seemed to blindingly trust people and hire on a whim at times, which lead—in one case—to the loss of an very productive day's receipts due to a dishonest employee, and—in another case—to tens of thousands of dollars of merchandise being lost to another dishonest employee).I was actually surprised how early on in the chain's story they were acquired by The Gap. The Ziegler's spent some time resting, launched a few efforts (some, like The Republic of Tea—subject of another co-written book—succeeded, whiles others did not) and watched while Banana Republic became what it is today: no different from The Gap or Old Navy, just a variant upon the same bland theme.Who is blame? The Ziegler's? The Gap? Mel and Patricia had (still have, I'm sure) plenty of talent when it came to writing, design and the like. Not so much when it came to managing the business. Maybe things would have been better if they had found a good partner early on who could manage things while they concentrated on their talents? The Gap initially acquired Banana Republic both for the growth and the culture. Maybe if they had allowed more of that culture to flow up into the larger entity rather than fight the smaller entity they would be more than a bland mall store today?It's really a shame, I think. Banana Republic succeeded because it was quirky. They had excellent merchandise (I believe I still have several of their shirts in my closet) and led the way in bringing us several design trends that we still see (the para-military or adventurer look is still with us) today. The catalogs and stores had a unique identity that set them apart from other Main Street or faceless mall storefronts. All gone, alas.Is it possible to have quality, growth, quirkiness all in one? Is it possible keep what made a company great over the life of a company? I don't know, but I eagerly await the next Banana Republic. I need some new shirts.

A beautiful book in every way. I would assume that most of us who were Banana Republicans, (doesn't quite work, does it?) know the story or perhaps parts of it. Mel and Patricia Ziegler tell us the rest. I won't go into a synopsis but will instead comment on what made this such a Great Saturday afternoon read...First off major kudos to both Marlyn Dantes for her clean and enticing cover design, mirroring what could be a modern minimalist version of a Banana Republic catalog, and Ruth Lee-Mui for the book design. The use of 2 different fonts in the copy, serif for Mel's words and sans-serif for Patricia's, worked beautifully and allowed for a fun and enticing read.As a an avid reader of each catalogue that came into my mailbox, the stories and art took me to imaginary but real places at a time when I had just returned from a stint in the Peace Corps in West Africa. Interestingly enough, the only way to get clothing there was to have it made. My good buddy, Lambo brought a pair of surplus cargo shorts that we gave to a tailor along with a few yards of British khaki from the market and voila, we had an endless supply of the coolest shorts we could imagine.I “got” Banana Republic from day one and still have those catalogues as well as the inaugural issue of Trips. Remember that?? I had forgotten about it myself until Mel’s story on page 171. I’l search for it in the garage this afternoon and cherish it once again.Truth is, I venture into the BR store at the local mall about once a year, somehow hoping to find something, anything that speaks to the real past. I am sure I am not the only one, just give me a simple die cast Jeep with the BR logo on the door for sale, if not, then a Safari Coat if you please. If you do, I may have a look at your merchandise, but alas the time for Mel and Patricia’s Banana Republic is past and I thank them for all they did to bring it to us.As I was reaching the end of Wild Company, the sun was setting and the orange glow on the final pages was in synch with first Mel, and then Patricia’s denouement. I almost wanted to read the book all over again, just to relive their adventure one more time.“Choices are hidden in the pace of the day. Dr. André J. Thomas, Owen F. Sellers, Professor of Music, is Director of Choral Activities and Professor of Choral Music Education at Florida State University. He previously served on the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Thomas received the baccalaureate degree in Music Education from Friends University, the Masters Degree in Piano Performance from Northwestern University, and the Doctorate of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting from the University of Illinois. He is frequently in demand as a choral adjudicator, clinician and director of Honor Choirs and All-State Choirs throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, New Zealand, and Australia. He has conducted choirs at the state, division and national conventions of Music Educators National Conference (MENC) and American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). He has served as a conductor and clinician for the International Federation of Choral Musicians. In 1998, Dr. Thomas conducted the World Youth Choir in the Republic of China and the Philippines, and returned in 1999-2000 to conduct the winter residency of the World Youth Choir in Europe. In 1999, he and the Florida State University Singers performed in Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City, at the invitation of the Vietnamese government. Besides his extensive conducting credits, he has distinguished himself as a composer/arranger. His compositions and arrangements are published by Heritage Music Press, Hinshaw Music Company, Mark Foster Music Company, Fitzsimmon Music Company, Lawson-Gould, earthsongs, Laurel Press, and Choristers Guild. We did this for my daughter's 8th birthday party. SOOO cute! The girls all really enjoyed it, although I could tell they were getting a touch tired of it at the very end. It took us just shy of an hour to do it, but it was with a group of almost 3rd graders, so some were better readers than others and I think that influenced our time frame. After we did the game, we had a little tapas type of dinner and then watched the Samantha movie we had picked up at the American Girl store. It was seriously the quietest birthday party full of little girls that I've ever experienced -- I even got to sit down with a glass of wine towards the end!

This is a great party for girls who like to dress up in fancy dresses. The invitations tell the invitees what to wear, but they don't get the scripts until they arrive at the party. The girls all came dressed up in old-fashioned party dresses with big bows in their hair, ready for a tea party. We had the girls help decorate cookies for the party when they first arrived, then handed out the scripts.There are parts for 8 girls and a mom, or nine girls. One girl needs to be comfortable hiding under the table for part of the action. Another is supposed to be in a nearby room for part of the action, but we had her sit nearby to feel a part of things.They were ready to do it again when it was over!

I used this game for my daughter's 8th Birthday Party. It was perfect for this age group. The kit comes with all of the Birthday invitations, and 9 bound scripts. (plus more!) Each child plays a character in this drama/play from the Samantha series from American Girl. The girls dressed in costumes with large bows in their hair, then we finished it off with a real victorian tea party. They loved it and said that this was the best Birthday Party ever. The play takes around an hour. The guests must be able to read, so if you have a younger sibling they can either be a shadow to one of the other characters, or just be one of the silent guests.

My initial reaction to the game was to wonder if I could jazz it up a bit, maybe add some clues, or make them harder to find. But, time got away from me and I just followed the instructions and the girls had a terrific time. It took us about an hour to set up (before the party) and 45 minutes to play.Thanks to the November 2004 movie, Samantha's story was well known to all the guests. Even those who were not great at reading aloud enjoyed the game. While the outcome of the story was obvious to me, and eventually to the girls, they got a kick out of solving it and seeing their guesses proven right.We used our game for a 9 year old's birthday party. The game was fun and it met my goal of planning a good party without getting into one of those $20+ a person, preplanned event parties. I really don't think children's birthday parties ought to be huge extravaganzas.We had eight girls giggling all over the house. (A little goofy improvisation channeling Steve from Blues Clues didn't hurt!)In addition we kept to the American girl theme by playing outdoor games, parlour games and making peppermint ice cream.As they say, a splendid time was had by all.

This was a fun and inexpensive party game and the girls all seemed to enjoy it! I had my older teenage daughter help with it and it turned out well.

What an absurd game. Let's stereotype kids who have lost their parents or were given up for adoption all for the sake of earning a dollar! Fire the one who came up with this idea!

What a shame to have a "game" that perpetuates stereotypes about orphans and adopting.Another reason to dislike the whole "American Girls" brand.:+P

I have used the Manhattan Block by Block guides for years and they are the absolute best if you want to get around in NYC by something other than cab. If you drive or prefer mass transit, or if you have multiple clients in Manhattan, or if you are touring NYC - buy this book. This is ALWAYS in my purse - and you may catch me using it if you visit Manhattan.6/28/2010: Wait for a new edition if you are using this for MTA (Metropolitian Transit Authority) info on buses and subways. A number of lines were combined or eliminated in order to cut back on costs.

We just came back from our first family trip to New York City. Had it not been for the Manhattan Block by Block guide, we would have had a difficult time getting around the city. With it, we were easily able to find sites we wanted to visit by name or address and locate the right subway and bus routes to take - all in one place that fit easily in a back pocket (and backpack). It also has a fairly detailed map of Central Park, which came in handy. The guide is durable and put up with regular use and was very easy to use, with high-level maps directing us to detailed street-level maps. We also liked the front section that explains how New York streets and avenues are arranged and how street addresses run. We're glad we bought it.

I have lived in or near NYC for most of my life, and yet if I don't take this book with me to thecity, I wish I had. This book has so much information, and is so easy to carry, you will alwayswant it with you in New York.

This is a great little reference book which is small and handy. Because there are so many amazing and historical buildings in NYC this handy guide is a terrific companion.

This guide book has a close up of all of Manhattan streets from the Hudson to the east river. The blocks indicate the house numbers therein. Notable buildings are indicated. Helpful indices are included

I bought this before I moved to the city from the West Coast, and I'm really happy with it. It's easy to navigate, and small enough to carry around in a purse. Obviously it only covers Manhattan; I wish it had some coverage of the outer boroughs but maybe there's another book for that. The only minus is that the maps don't show subway entrances/exits, which I think would be very useful. Overall, very very happy.

I use it for work and consider it an invaluable tool for my craft... can't be, as good as, I am without it!
