This book was so just what I needed! Something witty,funny and looking at life through the eyes of the legendary Peter Falk! He kept it simple,he was real and I love the fact that he paid honor to his first wife Alyce and to his 2nd wife! The photos in here are lovely,the only bad thing about this book is the fact that HE WASN'T MOE GREEN! I mean after reading this book I'm heart broken to know that,.we could've had our beloved COLUMBO IN THE GODFATHER! But truly this book is terrific,what else can you expect from one of the greatest actors in history!

Peter Falk tells how he was in some remote place, in Africa, I think, when he was approached by some local kids who smiled and waved. "Columbo!" they shouted.Falk talks about his raincoated character as well as other experiences in his life in small chapter, anecdotal form. He spends a couple of the chapters discussing how he came up with the Columbo character, what made Columbo tick, and even his use of the raincoat and where he got the beat-up old Peugot Columbo drove. Interviewed on the Actor's Studio by James Lipton, he's asked what he would like to hear God say when he arrived in heaven. Falk answered, "How much are those shoes?" a typical Columbo line he ad-libbed during an early episode.He also talks about other experiences in a chronological order, people he worked with, jobs he had, jokes, and more. He tells about the acting insight he got from orson Welles who was fed his line just before delivery through an earpiece. There was his arrest in Eastern Europe where he and his girlfriend were galivanting. He commented briefly on the skills of the late Patrick (Braveheart, TV's The Prisoner) McGoohan, who was a frequent Columbo guest villain as well as director of some episodes. There's his glee shared with co-star Alan Arkin that the Michael Douglas remake of their classic, The In laws, tanked at the box office. There are a few chapters about his friend John Cassavetes, the filming of favorite movies including It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, Frank Sinatra's call to ask him to be in Robin and the Seven Hoods (where he had to sing!), and much more.Regrettably, since writing the book, Falk has been stricken with Alzheimer's and ultimately passed away.Lightweight book, great subject, plenty of photos, even some sketches that Falk drew including a nice one of Columbo, a fast read (I'm not an especially fast reader but I knocked this off in one day).

I read it in a few hours. I loved him as Columbo and I believe I would have loved him had I the chance to meet him in person. A very funny,genuine and engaging book. Just one more thing, Thank you Peter Falk for years of priceless entertainment.

It is easy to picture Peter Falk sitting on the barstool ordering a favorite bowl of chili, talking about Columbo's cases and his interesting life and career. This book makes you feel like you're sitting next to him, listening and enjoying every word. A fun, lighthearted read with wonderful personal glimpses into a life filled with satisfying work, great friendships with equally talented movie and television people, and happiness in marriage.Such a rich life in every way. I highly recommend this book.

Hands down one of the best books I’ve had the pleasure of reading in a long time! It was like sitting in a comfy room with an old friend who’s telling you snippets of his beautiful life. I’ve always liked Peter Falk..I’m a huge Columbo fan..but after reading this book I just love the man! I highly recommend this book!

The book reads as though Peter Falk is talking to you; his writing style is conversational and the inclusion of some of his drawings is a real treat . I cherished each Columbo and a number of Peter Falk's movies. As I read, I reflected on his talent as an actor and thought how sad it is that so many of today's celebrities are far from his equal yet paid so much more.

If Falk's roles as Columbo and other characters pleased you, the same warm, self-deprecating personality comes through on the pages of this book. I only wish I had known about it earlier so I could have read it while this exceptionally talented actor was still alive.

I read this book after a coworker loaned it to me and wanted to buy one for myself. Unfortunately, there are multiple versions of this book which the product description doesn't explain. I tried ordering it twice, once from Amazon and once from a 3rd party seller and both times the book looked nothing like the one I borrowed (I attached pictures for comparison). If you don't care about the color of the cover, then by all means order this book. It's helpful, funny, and the cover design is beautiful.

This book is perfection. I am a professional proofreader and I am proud to have it in my library!

This is an informative fun book! Bought it for my adult daughter who uses the "f" word on occasion. What a hit!!

Great insight, hard read. This is the best theory about the decline of the USA that I have ever seen. I bought this book because it was mentioned in a George Will column. I am very glad I did. I did skip over some of the mathematical part though. The theory and conclusions are so obvious once you have read them, but Olson put the idea into words. He was right.

Great book. Not for everyone as the writing is pretty dry and academic, but Mr. Olson after all was an academic. This book was very close to 5 stars and would have given it 4 1/2 if possible, but I try to be stingy with 5 star ratings for those books I will definitely read again or those that have a profound impact upon my thought. I enjoyed his investigations of European growth and development and how he looked at the southern states (of the U.S) in the post Civil War period.

Olson seeks to explain why some nations achieve high rates of economic growth while others suffer bouts of stagflation. He contends that the number and strength of "distributional coalitions," coupled with the length of economic and political stability will influence a nation's rate of economic growth. As such, Olson's hypothesis is two fold. First, Olson argues that states with lower levels of "distributional coalitions" often have higher rates of economic growth. Second, states which have experienced prolonged periods of disorder or armed conflict will have lower numbers of interest-group, or collusion organizations.Olson's explanation builds upon his early work in The Logic of Collective Action, which holds that "...large groups, at least if they are composed of rational individuals, will not act in their group interest" (18). Rather, the rational actor will seek to further his or her self-interest, and will subsequently free-ride when possible. Olson expands the scope of this logic to encompass not only the rationality of the individual, but the rationality of the firm in explaining The Rise and Decline of Nations.As the power of the firm expands, the firm seeks to maximize its own utility at the expense of a societal common good. In order to simplify a complex argument, we can think of Olson's theory in this way. An organization or firm will not expend its energy to create a benefit to society writ large, as it, and its members, will only receive a fragment of that benefit in relation to the costs incurred. On the other hand, if the same firm seeks to maximize its utility, it will seek to obtain a larger slice of the social "pie." In so doing, it may lower the benefits of society as a whole, but will significantly expand its own gain and that of its members. Meanwhile the firm will only incur a fraction of the costs such action projects on society at large. As such, Olson writes, "The great majority of special-interest organizations redistribute income rather than create it and in the ways that reduce social efficiency and output" (47).Olson argues that a society with long-term stability - free from war, and economic and political turmoil - tend to accrue more special-interest and collusion groups. This occurs because it takes time and reasonable amount of stability for such interest-groups to organize, solidify, and begin to achieve some collective benefits for their members. Once collective benefits are seen as the result of organization, a host of other interests will begin to coalesce and seek to obtain gains for themselves. What emerges is a highly pluralistic society.This leads us to the second part of Olson's hypothesis, those nations with high numbers of special-interest or collusion groups have lower levels of economic growth. Olson writes, "Distributional coalitions slow down a society's capacity to adopt new technologies and reallocate resources in response to changing conditions, and they reduce the rate of economic growth" (65). First, distributional coalitions stymie technological adoption when such innovation stands to benefit a rival group. A present day illustration can be found in a labor unions vehement opposition to the implementation of labor saving machinery. Second, distributional coalitions will attempt to block policy initiatives that change the status quo. When policy needs to be developed to increase economic or social advancement, the special-interest groups are likely to feel a certain displacement and will act to prevent such policy. According to Olson, these actions, coupled with others, often lead to policies which promote policies which have the potential to stifle economic growth.

Like another reviewer, I am puzzled why Olsons work has not become mainstream by now. A comment on page 45 "The argument also has only a lesser applicability to any country in which constitutional and structural factors constrain the number and power of lobbying organizations, as appears to be the case in Switzerland." sent me to the internet to read the constitution of Switzerland, and provides a ray of sunshine. Perhaps we can loosen the grip of trial lawyers, labor unions, the AMA, defense contractors, multi-national corporations, etc. with a constitutional amendment.The only weakness in Olsons work is references to "growth" without reference to population increase or decrease, one of three factors (population, productivity, inflation) of growth that must be considered. But that was not an obvious issue 25 years ago when Olson wrote, and does not subtract from the brilliance of his theory. I highly reccommend this book.

Olson does a stellar job "proving" his theory using accepted scientific standards. His main thesis is that stable societies, over time, will be stifled by a steady growth of groups each committed to obtaining a disproportionate amount of society's goods. This theory, composed of only nine implications, is parsimonious with wide explanatory power. It helps to explain the post-war growth of coutries such as Japan and Germany, while providing a reason why the growth rates of the United States, and especially Great Britain, have been stagnated. Perhaps the most interesting chapter of the book is the last, in which Olson merges both Keynesianism and monetarism to form a new theory of macroeconomics. By using his theory, he is able to better explain involuntary unemployment than either of the more popular schools of macroeconomic theory. I was amazed at how many phenomena, such as slavery and the Indian caste system, can be at least partially explained by Olson's theory. Anyone seriously interested in knowing the way the world works will want to give this theory substantial consideration.

As a citizen of post communist country I was under constant propaganda of pure scientific economy coming from West. Much like scientific atheism but in realm of economics. Everything was about correct manupilation with numbers. Over time I was more and more convinced that main powers in our society remained same. What changed was only political environment. This book very clearly describes how much influence social groups have on economics. How hard it is to introduce some changes which go against interests of some groups, even when society as a whole would benefit. Thanks to numerous examples given in this book I can be pretty confident, that I am not a crazy person who can hear grass growing.

This is a very enjoyable read about the deep origins of human religions and culture. Don't pass it by.

While much of this material is available in other works by Professor Campbell, this easily readable (and everything by Campbell is) book is a clear, concise presentation. The editor did a wonderful service to Campbell's work and to those interested in understanding the transcendence beyond the myths of all religions.If you're tired of the religious orthodoxy that promotes myths as historical truths and science, this book, along with all of Campbell's work, will be an oasis from the tired and trite weariness of fundamentalism.

Buy this book! This book is the answer to my dreams. All in one place there are 37 GORGEOUS, well-designed, projects. Beautiful photographs illustrate each item well, and Susan Kesler-Simpson clearly shows the draft, threading, treadling options, yarns she used and alternates, along with a discussion of what has worked for her and has not worked for her. I have several bookmarked projects to be what I weave next. I am really excited. The author's work is modern in feel, even though overshot was what was hot in Colonial America. These are not our ancestors projects. These are modern designs using a traditional weave structure. The color combinations are lovely. There is nothing not to like about this book. You can weave a project exactly as presented or use the information provided and design your own or use her projects as a jumping off point to your own unique design. I come from the perspective of having been weaving only since 2015, so I am somewhere in the beginner to intermediate range of ability in weaving. Before buying this book, I had woven an overshot scarf, placemats in Monk's Belt which is a simplified structure, related to overshot, plus an overshot gamp shawl in a workshop. Since starting weaving, overshot has been my favorite weave structure because I love the intricacy of the patterns, but due to my not-yet-advanced status, I find it difficult to design my own overshot. Chapter 1 explains the overshot weave structure, and specifics of how to make weaving overshot easier. Chapter 2 covers creating an overshot pattern from a twill pattern, and there are illustrations in both chapter 1 and 2 showing drafts to make her explanations clear. Chapter 3 explains how borders are designed. Chapter 4 explains how to change the pattern by changing the treadling, illustrated with drafts. Chapter 5 explains how to design an overshot gamp. Chapter 6 explains how to set up the loom. Chapter 7 explains treadling. Chapter 8 is a grouping of small items that can be woven using overshot, such as keyrings, buttons, necklace medallion, book covers, purse. After those 7 chapters are the projects. The 37 projects include baby blankets, shawls and scarves, curtains, table runners, belts, Christmas ornaments, coasters, tablecloth, napkins, cape, poncho.

The first project I tried had a simple mistake that was easy to catch, but there is a problem with the tie ups in the book. She sometimes has them in reverse order - treadles 4,3,2,1 instead of 1.2.3.4. In addition the wrong tie-up was given for one of the projects and I had to try some of the different tie-ups in the book to find the correct one. Since this book is intended for even beginners, this was not something I picked up on even as a somewhat experienced weaver. Also there are no drawdowns which would have helped. The illustrations are okay but mostly are pictures on 'models'. I would have liked at least a small picture of the complete project. The one project I finally was able to complete turned out nicely but might need some tweeking to get it to square. But now that I have figured out the problems I do plan to make more of the projects.

After using the Peggy Osterkamp's book "Weaving for beginners", and then reading this book. I'm able to actually make cloth with overshot patterns. She had added the elegance of overshot to the ease of learning how.

I have loved overshot weaving since I began weaving more than 25 years ago. Stackpool publisher's put out an excellent book. It shows in the photography and font size. The author presented overshot very well. Plus there are multiple projects to weave. This book would be ideal for a first time weaver as well as a established weaver. I reviewed the book for our weaving guild and they were all wanting to buy the book.

As a newbie weaver I’m excited to try overshot but most other directions seem to assume a prior experience that never gave me the confidence to try overshot myself. This book is well laid out and easy to understand and has fabulous projects to try. The process is explained well enough that I’m ready to give it a go. Can’t wait to put one of the projects on my loom. I liked the book so much I purchased it for a friend who has woven overshot and she is impressed with the book as well.

Excellent book with some great projects - good descriptions and colored pictures. Worth the cost. Am sure it will be a best seller.

I’m just diving into Dr Sara Gottfrieds new book and couldn’t wait to write something about it. It’s yet another evolution of her work and thinking as she uncovers the mysteries of women’s bodies - peri menopause and beyond! The brain body connection is like a magic key that we’ve all been looking for. As a post menopausal woman I’m managing all the changes pretty well but still not where I’d like to be. My body is so different to how it was in my 30s and 40s. Dr Sara is giving us the pathway to truly get our body and mind back and reset. This book gives us all the science and the protocols to achieve our dreams and protect us from the dreaded aging diseases of dimentia and the like. I can’t wait to finish it and start the protocol. Would highly recommend reading if you are trying to navigate your way through peri menopause and beyond.

I love this book! I purchased it as a gift for my son, a photographer. The photos are so artfully and sensitively composed and printed. My son also photographs children from time to time, and I thought he would enjoy Keith Carter's images. Also, the quality of the book is really good. It's a nice, tabletop size hardcover book - perfect for giving as a gift.

As one not known for a fondness of children, I was pleasantly surprised by this book which I bought only to keep my collection of Keith Carter's works complete and intact. Nearly all of these images grab your interest, and some are very special indeed. Some of the pictures would be interesting even if the children were humanely expunged, as Carter's chosen settings, props and creative techniques result in a rather surreal ambiance which would make nearly any subject intriguing. This is an outstanding monograph. Bravo!!!

This book compiles excerpts from 10 different autobiographical narratives of former slaves. I appreciated that the focus was not on the sadistic atrocities that humans have afflicted on their fellow man (as true as those accounts are), but instead on the indomitable free-soul of a man, a woman, a child. Too, as a teacher and parent, I found the value these narrators placed on education (plain reading and writing) to be refreshing.

As far as customer service is concerned, it was excellent. I received the book just a few days after having ordered it and it was in very good condition. The contents of the book was not what I expected. The author seemed to generalize the subject matter without going into great detail, so it was ok.

My purchased was received before estimated date. An excellent book to have for children and adults.

I always get everything I need from Amazon-Price is lowest of anyone, products are the very best!!

Other than that (the title of the review), I can't comment much because I bought this book as a gift for a program for underprivileged kids. I didn't read it and was unable to get feedback.

"Growing Up In Slavery", Yuval Taylor, is an overwhelming and touching novel about ten young slaves who tell their stories growing up into slavery. These are short excerpts from these ten full autobiographies. They talk about all the struggles and tribulations that they had been through, Some of those struggles were being starved, tortured,violence, and being deprived. Some of the slaves that tell their accounts in the novel are Olaudah Equiano, William Wells Brown, Harriet Jacobs, and even Fredrick Douglas. As one, they come together to make this novel a great one. There are a couple of things in particular that I like about the novel. For instance, I like how vivid and clear the descriptions are for their stories. They used a great amount of imagery to help the reader to visualize how bad their experiences were. There were also sketched drawings of situations when they were being beat and whipped by their masters. This also helped me understand how hard their lives were as slaves. Another thing that I liked about the novel was that they didn't sugar-coat anything. They told everything how it actually was, which will make the reader appreciate and value the freedom they have and realize how lucky they are. Overall, "Growing Up In Slavery" is a book that will make readers think and truly appreciate life. Even though "Growing Up In Slavery" is a hard book to read because of the intense description of the brutality that slaves face, I strongly recommend this book to African Americans. The imagery helped me visualize their situations and I think anyone who enjoys novels about slavery would strongly agree.

The narratives in this book are probably compelling and heart wrenching, however it took many chapters of mostly explaining what slavery is , and the final insult is the format the writing took on; words chopped in halves and thirds and then ran down the page in a vertical coloum as narrow as 1-2" , like a word puzzle you never wanted.
