About the Author

Terryl Givens holds the James A. Bostwick chair of English and is Professor of Literature and Religion at the University of Richmond and the author of several books. His writing has been praised by the New York Times as provocative reading and includes, most recently, When Souls Had Wings, a history of the idea of premortal life in Western thought; a biography (with Matthew Grow) of Parley Pratt: The Apostle Paul of Mormonism (winner of the 2012 Best Book Award from the Mormon History Association); and Wrestling the Angel: The Foundations of Mormon Thought. I had wanted to read The Crucible of Doubt: Reflections on the Quest for Faith by Terryl and Fiona Givens for some time, especially since I was so impressed with Terryl's earlier book By the Hand of Mormon (which I reviewed here). Also, considering that Terryl co-authored the book with his wife (who is a convert from Roman Catholicism), I was especially intrigued. However, since the book itself is less than 150 pages, I was a little surprised that they could tackle such a broad issue like doubt in so few pages.As it turns out, my surprise was warranted because the book has little to do with the subject of doubt and skepticism as much as it has to do with asking the right kind of question and believing for its own sake at times. The book does start out strong, showing that some of peoples doubts come from asking the wrong kind of question or making false assumptions. For instance, the Givens use the example of B.H. Roberts, one of Mormonism's premier philosophers and theologians, and how he was once asked how the tribes of North America, who the Book of Mormon taught were descendants or a remnant of the Nephites/Lamanites, could have so diverse languages and they shared a common ancestry of just 2,000 years. Roberts, who was usually quick to answer critics, was never able to answer this question during his lifetime.However, the premise of the question was flawed; the Book of Mormon does not teach that all inhabitants of North America prior to the arrival of Christopher Columbus were descendants of the family of Lehi. Rather that is something that certain members chose to believe, and they read their belief into the text. So, there was really no conflict after all.One of the best chapters in the book is titled "Mormons and Monopolies: Holy Persons You Know Not Of", where the Givens tackle the issue of religious pluralism, which is the subject of whether one religion is true, or whether all are true in some way. While the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints may be the Church that has priesthood keys, there is truth in other religions, and their sacrifice and worship is acceptable to God as well. Also, a key element of this chapter that might be overlooked is that often times members of the Church tell an incorrect narrative of the Restoration. The common message is that the Church established by Jesus of Nazareth in the first century was lost and taken from the earth not long after that, but that is not the case. Rather, it retreated and was held from view for a time, but it was still there.Also in this chapter, the theme of judging religions at their best is repeated, one that was first enunciated by Krister Stendahl, former Bishop of Stockholm in the Lutheran Church. Often we judge a religious tradition at its worst (such is the case with the so called "New Atheists") rather than at its best. A duty of anyone making judgement on the value of a tradition must judge it at its best.Most of the book in some is not written to those who doubt whether or not God exists or have troubles with certain matters of Church history (blacks and the priesthood, polygamy, etc). In fact, the book is not really about doubt as much as it is about paradigms, or ways of looking at things. However, the last chapter does address those with serious doubts.On this subject of doubt, the Givens offer the example of Pascal's wager (although they don't mention Pascal by name), that it is better to believe for beliefs sake and possibly be wrong because in the end what you gained will be better than what you lost. I disagree. You should believe what you have evidence or warrant to believe, not because something makes you happy or not happy. If you find life miserable because there is no God, do what Alex Rosenberg suggests in his book The Atheist's Guide to Reality: take Prozac. If a person cannot bring themselves to believe, and the Doctrine and Covenants state that to some it is given to believe and to some it is not, then a loving God who weeps at our pain will accept the honest persons unbelief and skepticism more readily than a person who believed only to get gain.However, the Givens do make a great point in the epilogue:"Not once, but twice the Lord prefaced His commandment that we strengthen each other with this explanation: "As all have not faith." He thus acknowledged that even among His modern disciples, there would be-and must be-room for those who live in doubt."In the modern Church where many Mormons do not know much about their history and theology and then squirm when they hear it the first time, the reaction cannot be to judge and dismiss them or to say that they do not have a testimony; the reaction should be to help them, weep with them, and shoulder their burden. After all, that is what Jesus of Nazareth would do if he were present with them. Can his disciples do any less?Whether or not one is impressed with the arguments (or lack thereof) presented in this book, the Givens are splendid writers, and a joy to read for their own sake. If you have a friend who is doubting, or if you doubt yourself, this book is for you. Even if you don't doubt, there is something in this book for you as well. 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a MUST read for ANY Mormon. (I realize that is a sweeping statement.) Those with doubts, those without. Those who've abandoned the Church, those who are committed to their conversion. For me it provided me the clarity in discerning truth and tradition, and the relationship between God and His Church. Great content, PLUS so beautifully written. On the same level for me as other books in the Missionary Library, its importance just under the standard works. Has strengthened my relationship with God powerfully and given me greater insight. I've bought several to have on hand to gift them whenever I think someone might benefit from it.

An almost poetic approach to perspectives, many not yet articulated, by the Latter Day Saints.I found this book to be fascinating and once in a while, enlightening. At some points, it was beyond me but, pushing through, I could catch the jest of the ideas.The authors pull many quotes from many well-known authors and teach the doctrines of Christ in their own way. I'd say it was worth the read for someone who appreciates sophistication in their learning of the truth and can grasp the meaning and ideas in poetry.

I have held onto the the faith of my youth, which has evolved and expanded in the face of doubt, secularism, and rationalism. This book resonated with my own long held thoughts more than any book in many years. It is applicable to any person of faith - and doubts - who wonders if they can still believe and frames the case for that belief in a respectful, open minded way. There is no dogma in this work. Only doctrine and a reminder that we are not alone in our quest to find meaning in this life that offers so much rich joy and sorrow and beauty.

As a religious person, I've wondered what is the place of doubt & skepticism in my religious & philosophical thinking. This book teaches what healthy doubt looks like, and several strategies to resolve those doubts and consider them under a positive light. Doubt does NOT have to be the enemy of faith, but it can be the nourishment faith needs in order to grow. Great accomplishment from two of the most important LDS thinkers of out times.

Read and re-read this book. It was great to read someone who has the same doubts as myself and was not afraid to write about them. I do not like living in a world where people cannot not express their doubts about religion and learn from those doubts.

Where to start? I loved Red Queen, didn't care for Glass Sword at all, and just as I began King's Cage, which I thought was the final book, I found out there will be a book 4. And now I know why Glass Sword was so bad. Obviously she was asked to drag her 3 book series into 4 books. Kings Cage is much better than Glass Sword, but they would have been better as one great book, with all the filler taken out. So much of Glass Sword was filler and didn’t advance the story or make it better. But I digress, this is a review of King’s Cage. After finishing the book, I am honestly sad. I am trying to think about how Book 4 is going to go and at this point, I have no idea. I am hoping for some kind of happy ending for Mare, but after this book, I’m not sure that’s in the cards for her, and again, that makes me sad. The really good thing about this book is I like Mare again. I didn’t like her much after Glass Sword, but now I really care about her again. As far as our other leads, it's hard to like Maven, yes, he can be charming, but he's a psychopath, and even when we start to understand the reason, what was done to him, it doesn’t matter, he’s still evil. Cal can't make up his mind to save his life. It’s frustrating. How can you be in love with someone who’s people are being persecuted and wronged, but still manage to sympathize with the persecutors? To me he's almost worse than Maven, who at least is honest about the monster he is. With Cal, because he’s a good person, you expect him to do the right thing, and he doesn’t always do it. Evangeline...what can I say about her...she's still a bitch, but I like her now, which is something I never thought I'd say. And then there's Mare. My heart breaks for all the suffering she has to endure. Can we please give this girl a happy ending in Book 4? She’s so strong, even when they weaken her, she keeps mentally strong, and later she turns into a real fighter, and I am rooting for her all the way, she deserves a win. There are a few interesting new characters that will probably play a larger role in Book 4. I didn’t like the author’s choice to use Cameron as a point of view, I had to go back to Glass Sword to remember who she was. I would have preferred point of views from Cal, or Farley instead of her. The book was entertaining, if a little too long in some areas, it held my attention the entire way through, picking up and getting better as it went along. And that ending. The author took us to the top of the cliff, and left us there hanging. If a book ends on such a cliffhanger, we shouldn’t have to wait longer than 6 months for the next one. Really. Can that be a rule? All, in all, this book redeemed the series for me. Mare is back, more like the Mare from Red Queen, but stronger, and that’s a good thing.

*SPOILERS*I really enjoyed Red Queen and couldn't put it down. Glass Sword was great as well, despite being a lot slower during the second half. I really wanted to love King's Cage, since I have already invested so much in the series and in the Mare-Cal relationship. Unfortunately, many parts of King's Cage just completely fell flat and bogged the whole story down.I felt no connection whatsoever to the chapters told from Cameron's perspective. I didn't care for her in Glass Sword, and liked her even less in this. I get that the author was giving us a peek into what the Red Guard was up to while Mare was being held prisoner, but I think Cal or Kilorn's perspectives would have carried more weight or interest. Evangeline's chapters were more interesting, but even they were not necessary and just felt like filler. With the exception of Mare's one failed escape attempt, the first 300 pages were almost painfully slow. The story didn't start to get exciting until Maven's wedding and Mare's rescue.The last chapter and the epilogue seemed to erase all the character development that Cal made throughout the series. I have loved him since the moment he came into Mare's life and called her a thief, and he progressively got even better throughout King's Cage UNTIL that annoying ending painted him as a liar (since he had previously said he loved and wanted Mare more than ANYTHING). It doesn't make sense to me. He has risked his life how many times to save her, and then doesn't choose her when offered his crown/Evangeline vs Mare? I have a sinking feeling the 4th book is going to end with Mare either dead or alone, like so many book series seem to be doing these days. I especially feel this way because in Glass Sword, Jon mentioned that he foresaw Mare alone. I will be reading reviews on Amazon for spoilers after the 4th book is released next year because if she or Cal die, or don't end up together, I will not bother buying the book or wasting any more of my time on this series.

Last month [September] I became fascinated with books of a Christian nature, what then would you call it if 17 of the 34 [50%] books I’d read/reviewed had belonged to this genre. Since Amazon considers me to be a Top Contributor of True Crime Books, I certainly have my favorite authors, of which Ryan Becker is one of them.We’ve all been fascinated, but more over appalled, in reading the stories of heinous murderers and serial killers who have capture the attention of national newspapers, the media [including on-line] and the general public with their sensational headlines with stories which oftentimes contain excruciating details of their crimes.Deplorable as these individuals and their crimes might be, there are more similar hideous individuals and their atrocious deeds, who for some reason; and although they’ve been caught, trialed and sentenced, have been to get by unnoticed, literally flying below all media’s attention.In this book, Murderous Minds – Volume 2, Mr. Becker has adeptly collected the stories of six such individuals for his readers. And, as usual, this author has endeavored to provide them with some sociological and psychological explanations for their actions. These perverted, despicable stories should have provided at least some newspapers with gory headlines, albeit they might have not been on the front page.For giving his readers an informative ride into the deviant minds of the individual contained in this book, I’m giving Mr. Becker 5 STARS. Mr Becker has done his research writing this compilation of true crime. The fact that some of these murderers aren't as publicized as some shouldn't render them any less evil than they were.I am very familiar with the Ronald Gene Simmons case as I lived 20 miles from where this maniac committed his crimes. It's a small town and nothing like this occurs at such a level , and hasn't since. I appreciate the time Mr Becker has put in to research this particular case and describe it as it happened in great detail. I like reading an author's perspective of such crime and the ability of the author to keep the reader interested and not second guessing what has occurred or requiring additional research . Mr Becker has accomplished this goal and I look forward to his next project.

This book grabbed my attention from the first chapter. I’ve been in the industry for some time; personally, this is one of the few books I would suggest to those interested in understanding the basics of blockchains and bitcoin. Antony helps us clearly understand the theme, concisely describing the technology in a logical way, clearly presenting the concepts, and on top of that how everything fits together. Unlike Mastering Bitcoin by Andreas M. Antonopoulos, which definitely is a book for people who already have a programming background, interestingly The Basics of Bitcoins and Blockchains can be appreciated by readers with different backgrounds. It is an enjoyable and easy reading although a comprehensive exposure to bitcoin and blockchains.As mentioned on the back cover, this book is a crash course in money, cryptocurrencies, initial coin offerings (ICO) and enterprise blockchains. As the one responsible for Cash and CBDC strategy at R3, not surprisingly, Antony teaches us everything we have to know from historical facts, physical and digital money, through a smooth introduction to cryptography (probably the most understandable explanation about the mechanics of Proof-of-Work), the emergence of cryptocurrencies and digital tokens to the latest thinking about the technology adoption by enterprises. By and large a delightful read for anyone who wants to understand everything about bitcoins and blockchains.

I am a long-term reader of Antony's "Bits on Blocks" which is one of the very few references written in a way that can be appreciated by readers with different technical backgrounds. I always recommend my peers to read his blog to build a solid foundation before on boarding their crypto journey. I am a bit surprised that Antony doesn’t simply recycle his blog for this book but actually puts in time and effort to restructure the content and the delivery of the concept (and add in new stuff like "Money" and "Digital Money" as the appetizer). I highly recommend this book for those who want to know the truth of bitcoin and blockchain. The analogy I can make is that if you want to understand derivatives, you read "Options, Futures and Derivatives" by John Hull; likewise for crytocurrencies and blockchain technologies, "The Basics of Bitcoins and Blockchains" by Antony Lewis.

Really good balance between ease of reading and just enough substance and depth to allow you to understand the basics of blockchain and bitcoin. The book takes a methodical and structured approach which helped me build understanding on the topic step-by-step. It is hard to find trusthworthy and well structured knowledge in this space today so I have to say this one is a recommended read.

I joined the blockchain industry 3 months ago and I wish this book was out back then... Anyway, it's good to get up to speed now. The Basics has helped with my client conversations, especially around the difference between public and private blockchains. Although I am not particularly technical, it was easy to understand the maths/crypto bits.

It is an easy read yet comprehensive guide on blockchain. Would highly recommend this to anyone who would like to understand this technology.

This is the best introduction to blockchain, with plenty of depth too. It's clear and easy to read, without being dumbed down. I love that each idea is built up from scratch, the author doesn't assume any prior knowledge in finance or tech.
