Interesting for anyone who likes Greek ancient history. Have read similar books about Schlieman from 1970-something but this is very interesting since we now know where all these thigs ended up...

Excellent story about a most intriguing character

This is the story of the gold unearthed by the archeologist Schliemann in his dig at Hissarlik. Schliemann spent many years excavating this site and in his early years at the site unearthed some fabulous artifacts including a collection of gold jewelry he claimed was Helen's treasure. Schliemann smuggled this treasure out of the country despite an agreement with the Turkish government that he would share his findings with them. This is characteristic of early archeology, more tomb robber than scientist.Despite his bad reputation, Schliemann managed to secure permission to excavate many sites throughout the world, making many important discoveries. This book covers the biography of Schliemann, an autodidact who became rich through trade and then pursued his interest in ancient Greek, particularly the works of Homer, by digging for treasure following the cues of Homer and other ancient authors such as Pausanias. Schliemann was an extraordinary intellect, learning up to 20 languages in his lifetime and publishing several books. He learned archeology by doing and amended his early tomb-robbing style to a more careful study of sites. Schliemann had many critics throughout his life but also some influential supporters such as Gladstone in England.Moorehead provides a balanced view of Schliemann's biography. She also tracks what happened to the treasures of Troy when they were captured by the Russians at the end of WWII. Apparently the Russians confiscated many Nazi caches of art. The Germans had looted and destroyed many Russian works of art in Eastern Europe and the Russians felt they were due restitution for what was lost. According to Moorehead there were millions of artifacts stored in Russia that only recently have been located. At the time of publication the fate of the treasure of Troy was uncertain. This is a fascinating, well researched and well-written account combining history and biography. Highly recommended!

This is another book about the life of Heinrich Scheilmann. Scheilmann was a German who made a vast sum of money as a merchant selling indigo a sort of blue dye. He developed an interest in Greek culture and set out to prove that the events described in the works of Homer were true.He traveled to Turkey and sought out the sight of Troy using Homers descriptions in the Illiad. He certainly found the remnants of an old city and in it gold. Scheilmann is a man for whom truth was very much a theoretical concept rather than something that would guide him in day to day life. He hid the gold from the Turkish authorities and smuggled it to Greece. Some have suggested that he may even have planted the gold himself to give greater credence to the city being Troy. One thing is certain and that at this point in his life he was a dreadful archeologist. The key to archeology is the careful removal of soil and the mapping in detail of the objects found. Scheilmann simply had his men dig looking for things such as treasure and throwing everything else away. For this reason he has been seen more as a vandal than anything else. This book tries to rehabilitate his reputation and show that he was an important figure in the discovery of Greek history. The author basically argues that after his first dig he began to use people with skill on his digs and to do things more carefully. He returned to Troy on a number of occasions and in later digs was more careful and systematic. He also dug up at least three other sites of major importance. The reality is that if all of the sights he dug at had been left untouched until now we would probably have had a better understanding of our past. Never the less Scheilmann's life is one of fascination so that the book is one that is easy to read. The last chapter is about the fate of the Gold that was found at Troy. During the war it was seized by the Russians and was kept hidden until recently. This section of the book although topical has a tacked on feel to it.The book in the end reworks old material and does not really say much more than has been said in the past. If you have not read any other books about the topic it is a readable and light weight treatment of the topic.

'LOST AND FOUND' is a very thorough biography of Heinrich Schliemann but the insightful discussion concerning "Priam's Treasure", post Schliemann's lifetime, would have been better suited for an extended newspaper editorial. The intricacies of Schliemann's archaeological methodology are not explained adequately and that is a shame. Moorehead mentions Schliemann's innovative use of ceramic analysis (potsherds) but fails to adequately define how revolutionary and important it was at the time. Moorehead does a great job explaining how Schliemann's initial foray into archaeology resembled the work of grave robber. If you are interested in Heinrich Schliemann the man, then read this book... now. But, if you are interested in the evolution of 19th century archaeology or in-depth archaeological validation of the Trojan War, then there are much better books on the subject. A good example of a better book on the latter two subjects is: 'FINDING THE WALLS TROY: FRANK CALVERT AND HEINRICH SCHLIEMANN AT HISARLIK', by Susan Allen.

Review

"Scurrilous, sexy, stupid, satirical, scatological, side-splitting, and probably something else beginning with 's,' Jody Enders's translation of twelve French farces is a real discovery that goes a long way to readjusting our perception of the Middle Ages. Enders is a great champion of comedy at its most vulgar and hilarious. She points out that however silly or banal these farces may appear to us, they nonetheless confront the real controversies of their day over the law, politics, religion, social order, or the battle of the sexes. Thoroughly grounded in her academic approach to the subject, Enders nevertheless writes with liveliness and humor and wit. She is unafraid to reference modern comedy in her translations and insists on the primacy of performance in assessing these comedies from half a millennium ago."—Terry Jones

I am completely baffled by Kiri's review of Enders' The Farce of the Fart. This book is a TREASURE! I am a professor and theater director, and I have found The Farce of the Fart to be an invaluable teaching resource. Enders has done a rare thing: she has ensured that her brilliant translations are ready for the stage. It is obvious that she has thought carefully about how these delightful plays might be produced and she has considered the actor in her work. Some of the BEST work I have seen students do in my acting classes is when they perform plays from The Farce of the Fart. Enders' translations require students to consider elements like comedic timing, double entendre, physicality, and character relationships, all the things we want acting students to think about. Best of all The Farce of the Fart makes medieval literature accessible, thought-provoking, and FUN. I look forward to many more years of using Enders' work in my courses and I cannot wait for the new editions of farces to be released!

Super fun. We think of the Middle Ages as a literary black hole. Thanks to Jody Enders we have a glimpse of how vibrant the theatrical life on the street was.

Enders has wisely chosen the route of “adapted” rather than “literal” translations, preserving farce’s characteristic exuberance by inserting, where appropriate, “an extra line, an extra term, an extra mimed scene, an extra nonspeaking character, an extra possible musical number, or an extra name (especially for the many unnamed female characters)." Her aim throughout is to make farce a living tradition again, one that remains imbued with the “precious essence” of a medieval genre but that also merges gleefully and ironically with contemporary idioms and themes: “sitcoms, stand-up comedy, Saturday Night Live, political gaffes, widespread litigiousness, the excesses of university life, twentieth- and twenty-first-century slang, and whatever music rises and falls on the pop charts, especially country music." As improbable and unscholarly as all this may sound, "The Farce of the Fart" manages to be both uproariously funny (I regularly disturbed people around me by laughing out loud) and intellectually rigorous (my copy is filled with marginal notes, even though I have read these plays many times). Medievalists who cannot read the original texts should certainly heed Enders’s warning that her translations frequently depart from strict literalism. But these departures are not only wildly obvious; they are also nearly always flagged with an endnote. And at the end of the day, what really matters is that Enders is capable of striking a balance between farce’s historical specificity and issues of contemporary relevance. I regularly marveled at her ingenious strategies for incorporating references to today’s lived realities into her farces while remaining essentially true to the medieval theatrical world from which those farces emerged. A signal achievement in theatrical translation, and I can't wait to read more!

Sadly I was beyond disappointed in this book. The bio of the author gave me great hope that this would be a witty and reasonably accurate rendition of the original French plays. What I found was plays translated and then butchered by what appears to be 1950's American doggerel. The resultant plays are truly awful. My only hope was that the book might have included the original plays in French so I could translate them myself. But no. The author does include a few examples of where she did a straight translation into English, then showing how she translated that into hideous slang.I really wish I could find a redeeming feature to this book, but I am sorry, I can't. Maybe the patois the author used works in the US, but is shudderingly awful in any other English speaking country. It is so disappointing that a professor of French and Theatre produced this instead of what could have been a great book reviving these fun farces.

An incredibly sane, comprehensive, and compassionate approach to confronting a national crisis. This should be required reading for everyone affected by the devastation and tragedy of opioid addiction. The unbridled greed and insatiable appetites of the corporate forces pushing these drugs must be stopped, and the only way to do that is by shining a light on these problems and practices. Nelson has just created one heck of a flashlight.

I was fortunate enough to read this book prior to its official release. Harry does a tremendous job explaining historical facts and interweaving practical conclusions and opinions. This is a terrific read!

I've been "following" the opioid crisis for years: reading books and articles about it and hearing first-hand horror stories. Yet Harry Nelson's "The United States of Opioids" is the first I've read that covers brilliantly how long civilization has been living with the curse of opioid addiction, its escalation - in harrowing charts and graphs, and the roles pharma and the healthcare system itself have played in creating the crisis. The book is also among the first to present the case for needed physical pain therapies, including the proactive role that medical marijuana has the potential to play in "liberating a nation in pain." Most important, it concludes with what each of us can do to help turn the tide of addiction that's washing out hundreds of thousands of precious lives. I strongly recommend this book to anyone in healthcare, education, law enforcement, politics, and - especially - to parents.

This book provides a very clear, easily understood view of how the opioid crisis started, the context in which it has unfolded and has been "managed" to date, and a thoughtful vision for what needs to change. If you're concerned about the opioid crisis--whether as a health provider, family member of someone struggling with addiction, a community leader or a policy person--this book is a must-read.
