Review

“This second edition of a classic… offers new hope for the future of aging and care.”“This book is a tour de force and a must read for anyone who cares about individuals who are living with dementia. Dr. Power, through his wonderful insights, pragmatic sensibility, and personal experiences, offers valuable information to change the culture of dementia care that sorely needs changing. The first edition of the book was excellent, yet the second edition is even more enriching. Bravo!” (Dementia Action Alliance Reviews 2016-07-15)“As this second edition of a classic demonstrates, Dr. Al Power is a pioneer still on a journey to transform the lives of people with dementia. His work and passion contribute to the bigger picture of challenging medicalization and institutionalization, which are built on limited views of the value of diagnostic labels, the nature of aging, and the power of science. His book offers new hope for the future of aging and care.” (Case Western Reserve University Reviews 2016-07-15)“This book is a must for all who endeavour to better care for our seniors! If we are new to person and relationship centred care, it illuminates, instructs, and edifies. If we are already on this journey of enlightened care, it makes palpable our shared understanding and experiences, galvanising us and inspiring us to new heights!” (Centre Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, National University of Singapore Reviews 2016-07-15)“This book is a must read for individuals and organisations working with people living with dementia. It certainly sparked a revolution in me personally―which then spread quickly throughout my entire company.” (Arcare Residential Aged Care, Australia Reviews 2016-07-15)

So often there are whole hospitals where are dementia family members are seeing as so difficult that it is better to just drugged them and leave them in a hospital bed turning them to make sure they have bed sores prevented or treated. This is inhumane. This book is an outlier in the books about dementia. We are starting to see a shift and dementia care. And this book is one of the tools that people can use to make sure the loved ones are being cared for without being sedated out of life. Dementia patients or not something to be feared dementia isn't a dirty word and it's possible to be happy while having dementia. Personally I think a combination of drugs and non-drug tactics were the best treatment for my own personal family member with dementia.

Geriatricians and all those involved with providing care for frail seniors should read this book, especially family members. Allen Power is a geriatrician and the Chief Medical Officer of a large nursing home on the East Coast. The vast majority of the resident were taking psychotropic medications for behavioral issues, tied to mental health diagnoses. Within a short year, the percentage of residents taking psychotropic medications plummeted from 60+ percent to less than 10 percent. What changed? How did he do that? Nothing was changed externally, no staffing changes, facility modifications. HE changed his attitude and approach to undesired behavior of the residents. Instead of assuming that he has to fix that behavior, usually with sedation or anti-psychotic meds, he interpreted that behavior as an expression for an unmet need. Engaging the resident in identifying that unmet need led to a collaborative problem solving situation instead of "I'm going to make you stop doing that". Many frail seniors cannot speak or articulate their needs, have dementia, and respond by acting out when frustrated. Allen Power saved millions of dollars in psychotropic medications and the residents are happier, more functional, healthier in general and maintained their DIGNITY. All he did was change himself. Powerful and revolutionary in the field of long-term care.

I bought this book way to late to have any impact on my mom's care. I wish I'd bought it several years sooner. Dementia is accelerated, I believe, by poor diet, and lack of exercise. My mom existed on cookies, ice cream and fruit; and she stopped swimming, which was her only form of exercise. Her rapid descent into full blown Dementia was heartbreaking. She lived a good long life, and passed away at 93. But the dementia didn't need to happen.

This is an excellent source of information about the use of drugs for anyone who has dementia. One of the big points he makes is that what we as caregivers often interprete as disruptive behavior is actually an expression of one or more needs that he or she has. The book gives good information for people caring for a loved one in their home or caregivers in a care center.I would recommend the book very highly as he is speaking from actual experience not just text book theory.

This book has been so helpful in our approach to managing the care of my brother-in-law, age 73 who has been living with Alzheimer's for several years. We are focusing on his assets rather than his deficits. It takes the stress off him and his care team. It can be a very powerful tool in changing the the culture.

This book makes so much sense. I have been in long term care for over 20 yrs, The home I am working in now is Eden in construction. We are working hard to get it right and this book is such an inspiration for me, I find myself not just reading it but going back to study it. I am constantly going back to relate something happening in our home to compare how it was in the book, possibly to help offer a possible solution to a challenge. Our Manager was fortunate enough to hear Mr. Power speak. I do hope I will be as fortunate. The Man and the book are absolutely brilliant. I would highly recommend it for anyone that is close to someone with dementia or even curious about the subject.

I heard the Author speak at a Symposium on Alzheimer's that I attended in Buffalo, NY and was excited about the possibility of Dementia being viewed and approached differently than what we normally see.I believe G.Allen Powers ideas although not necessarily revolutionary( how sad is that? ) but certainly humane and refreshing! In a culture that turns to pharmaceutical drugs for everything , it is a breath of fresh air to apply a more Holistic approach !

Dementia Beyond Drugs is without a doubt the most important book to be written on the care of individuals with dementia in many years. Dr. Power takes the reader on a journey that is sorely needed for many in this field. He challenges us to think differently about dementia as an illness, and more importantly, to regard the person LIVING with dementia in a whole new way. As a gerontologist and long term care professional who considered herself very far down the culture change path, I found many new ideas and much inspiration from this book. I know this book will change the way I shape dementia care in my work for years to come. I couldn't put it down.

Good

As a school, we are trying to build stronger relationships with our parents. We are contacting them more often with phone calls and text messages and having more family nights. We have also begun using email with our registration so that we can communicate through email to parents on a regular basis. This has given me a few more ideas, but wasn't completely what I was looking for. While it is teacher focused, it doesn't say more than what we are already doing. For instance, they want to make sure that we are listening to what they are going through versus just telling them about the issues at school. In all of the parent conferences that we have, we always start out with the parent talking and we start our phone conversations with asking what is happening at home because it gives us insight on what is happening at school.

I got this Powerful Partnerships book to assist me in improving the educational partnerships between the staff and our parents. Sometimes its easy to feel isolation and it is nice to have administrative and parent support or acknowledgement for all that I do. I found this helpful especially, the ideas presented in maintaining strong family ties throughout the year. The structure of a family conference involves preparation for example, you should start making the conference interactive bu having the family or students speak first as you listen intently. The book provides guidance on how to plan engagement opportunities and events throughout the school year for example publishing parties, family math night, parent panels, plays, student exhibitions, and more strategies. Overall, this is a good resource for any elementary, middle, or high school educator.Neat bonus, there are partnership clips throughout the book where Dr. Mapp address key topics with video footage that can be accessed from the scholastic website including downloads.

This book helped to renew my motivation to engage parents and build their buy-in. I have always felt that putting extra effort in building home-school partnerships pays dividends throughout the year. I was finding my optimism start to decline when I read this book and feel ready to get back in there. There are suggested activities that most teachers should be able to easily implement. The online resources are very helpful and a great addition to the book. Getting home support in today's classroom's is essential so I recommend this book to all teachers.

There are great tips in here for any teacher. It's important to have a good relationship with your student's parents as they are the child's first teacher. They know the child best, and once you have developed a good relationship, parents are willing to share what works for them.So often, I see an "us vs. them" attitude on both sides, but those partnerships are really important.

I like that "Powerful Partnerships: A Teacher's Guide to Engaging Families for Student Success" by Karen Mapp, Ilene Carver, and Jessica Lander include entries from actual parents. That inclusion helps round out a lean but information packed guidebook. The book covers beliefs to maintenance to support and it does so in an economical and easy to digest manner. It is written with the teacher in mind but it would also be beneficial for a parent to read as well.

I enjoyed so much of this book. It includes many wonder ideas to develop relationships with the families of your students. It is a quick read, but is not just fluff.

Interesting read by a man who credibly predicts new discoveries or devices already on the horizon and projecting where technology (and life) will lead if things continue as expected. Of course, nobody knows the future. Cataclysms, world nuclear war, etc., could change the future considerably. His book assumes that society and technology continues on its trajectory.Kaku is a recognized authority connected to many fields of science, so he is not merely an outsider writing a book. He also recognizes the boundaries of our technology. Even in a hundred years, he suggests, we will not have robuts capable of creative thought. We will not travel faster than light, etc. He may be too optimistic about human nature. While recognizing how some technology can be misused by criminals or hostile governments, his optimistic outlook wants to believe such problems will be solved or their impacts minimal. I am a little skeptical about this. This is one of those books you cannot put down. Since it is already a few years old, a few of Kaku's predictions have already come to pass, although he did miss the oil glut we are now experiencing.

Michio Kaku demonstrates the breadth of his education and skills in providing the outlook for technogy in the future and provides a timeline for each development. He forecasts the demise of the advancements made under Moores law and warns of the slowdown in computer purchases as a result, but goes on to explain a redefinition of the computer and its alternatives. I suspect the growth of demand for computers will be supported by the increased application and methods by which they will be used. Michio Kaku reminds us of the importance of appropriate response to difficult geopolitics, support for foreign immigrants in maintaining a competitive moat in high tech, the importance of improvements in scientific education training, and the role physics has and will continue to play in the development of technology in the future. He alludes that the ranking a country will hold in the political power situation worldwide will depend on thier progress in scientific based technology. I highly recommend this book both for a enjoyable read and for the wealth of detailed information it contains and the objectivity and demonstration of skill the author provides throughout.

As an author currently working on a post-apocalyptic thriller where the apocalypse occurs when mankind has early 22nd century technology, I found Dr. Kaku's work to be extraordinarily helpful in attempting to ground that technology in potential realism. However, this book is much more than a useful tool for research, it is an amazing look into the potentialities of the future, and Dr. Kaku's writing style makes the information quite digestible to the casual science fan.

Many people who have reviewed this work know who Mr. Kaku is, but I sure didn't. What attracted me to his book was that the author is a theoretical physicist and his intent to was to make his predictions rooted in physics and not flights of fancy. He interviewed 300 top scientists and wrote the book for the general layman. As long as you're intellectually curious and can read, you will not find Mr. Kaku's work difficult to follow. He makes quite a few pop-cultural references to Star Trek, The Terminator, Star Wars technology as well as their feasibility. The author has broken each chapter into time sections. First he gives a general overview of physics up to present day then explains the advancements we should see between today and 2030 (Near Future,) 2030 through 2070 (Midcentury,) and 2070 until 2100 (Far Future.) Topics which are covered include computer technology, artificial intelligence, medicine, communication, space travel, germ warfare, cloning, nanotechnology, and energy. Mr. Kaku only skims certain social aspects of the future. This is the biggest problem with his work. He does acknowledge that advancements may be hindered by human fears or superstitions, but ignores such things as companies incorporating planned obsolescence such as how light bulbs are built to wear out instead of lasting practically forever. Also, religious fundamentalism like is seen throughout the Middle East and the United States Bible Belt are huge roadblocks to scientific advancement and acceptance.Overall, the book has an upbeat, geewhiz feel. I even learned a great deal about where we are today when it comes to scientific discoveries. "Physics of the Future" is very interesting because the author does an excellent job describing how the different scientific principles work and the difficulties ahead. As with any science book worth its salt, evolution is taken as a given. People who are religious creationists should read the book purely to understand the whole Adam-and-Eve thing is nonsense. As Mr. Kaku aptly writes in his work, "...One is free to ignore science and technology, but only at your peril. The world does not stand still because you are reading a religious text. If you do not master the latest in science and technology, then your competitors will."

Fritz Reiner, Maestro and Martinet (Music in American Life), by Kenneth Morgan

From Publishers Weekly

A gifted musician and a brilliant technician with the baton, the Hungarian-born Reiner never became a star like some of his contemporaries, and, as Morgan documents in this absorbing biography, Reiner's prickly personality, his stubborn refusal to promote himself, his frequent clashes with orchestra managers and backers and his icy relationship with the press sabotaged his ambitions time and again. As a result, one of the finest conductors of the twentieth century is widely respected by musicians, but comparatively neglected by the public. A product of the opera houses of central Europe, Reiner enjoyed stormy yet artistically fruitful tenures with the Cincinnati Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony and Chicago Symphony orchestras as well as the Metropolitan Opera. He spent a decade as the leading conducting teacher at Philadelphia's prestigious Curtis Institute, where his pupils included a young Leonard Bernstein. Morgan offers fascinating insights into Reiner as teacher and interpreter-his small but precise beat, his fanatical attention to balances and phrasing and his strong feelings about new music. (Reiner was a champion of the works of fellow Hungarian Bela Bartok.) At the same time, Morgan delves into the Reiner's darker side, noting the "sarcasm and withering contempt" the conductor leveled at musicians who failed to meet his standards. Union rules and changing conceptions of a conductor's role make it unlikely that we will see another martinet at the helm of a major orchestra, but this book makes it clear that Reiner is worth remembering. Review

"A lively, polished, and succinct writer and scholar of the first rank, Kenneth Morgan has filled a critical gap left by Reiner's previous biographer, focusing as he does on Fritz Reiner's musicianship. Through impeccable research and revealing interviews, Morgan offers unprecedented insights into those distinctive characteristics that made Reiner one of the greatest conductors of all time. Especially welcome is his detailed discussion of the famous legacy of recordings that keeps Reiner's memory alive, even to those too young to have heard him in concert."--Steven Hillyer, editor of Podium "Kenneth Morgan's eminently readable Fritz Reiner is a highly provocative and well-researched biography of one of the most interesting musicians who worked in the United States. It will certainly be of great value to all those interested in this legendary conductor."--Leonard Slatkin, music director, National Symphony Orchestra "In the galaxy of brilliant Chicago Symphony maestri including such giants as Theodore Thomas, Frederick Stock, Georg Solti, and the incumbent Daniel Barenboim, Fritz Reiner was a masterful conductor in the great tradition, modest in demeanor yet fierce on behalf of the highest musical standards."--Danny Newman, Lyric Opera Chicago

Kenneth Morgan's book seems to be only the second full-length work devoted to the eminent conductor Fritz Reiner (1888-1963). It is thoroughly researched and Morgan has had the benefit of access to extensive archival material including Reiner's own papers. As an academic study it fills an important gap. However as a biography of Fritz Reiner it does not tell the whole story.Morgan, not a musician but a history professor, is really only interested in Reiner's career, achievements and legacy as a conductor, teacher and recording artist. Thus the usual biographical details are summarised in the first (20-page) chapter, which reads like a separate article, leaving Morgan free to spend the rest of the book on charting Reiner's career. Reiner was married three times but we learn little about his wives or his three children. Certainly readers are interested in Reiner's friendships with major figures like Bartók and Richard Strauss, but they are also interested in what Reiner was like away from the concert hall and the opera house. Reiner was a private man but surely it is the job of a biographer to provide insights into his subject's personal life, or at least appropriate parts of it.I also found some features of Morgan's writing style unhelpful, particularly his penchant for setting out streams of information rather than listing it (or, better, moving it to an appendix). A half-page paragraph running through the repertoire which Reiner conducted in a season or a location quickly becomes indigestible. The writing style is occasionally maladroit, as with this example from page 157: "He did not find a place for all leading American composers on his programs, notably Charles Ives, Elliott Carter, and Roger Sessions". There are also some factual lapses, such as including Flotow's opera Martha among French repertoire (p.34) and stating that the original version of Mozart's G minor symphony (K.550) has oboes rather than clarinets (p.214 - there are oboe parts in the `clarinet version' too). Two uses of the non-word `miniscule' should have been picked up in proof reading. But for all my criticisms, this is an important and valuable book. Reiner was a significant figure in 20th century music, but he was not a charismatic man and he remains much less well known than he deserves. It is unlikely we will get another biography of similar quality in the foreseeable future so I certainly recommend buying and reading this one. Print and paper quality are good and there is a very interesting selection of photographs.

It is a pleasure to read Kenneth Morgan's excellent biography of Fritz Reiner, giving music lovers a wonderful account of his extraordinary life, far surpassing the pathetic, earlier work by Philip Hart.Although one could still hope for a biography even richer and more complete than this, Morgan at least gives us a well-balanced account of the great conductor's career, and writes with a style infinitely superior to that possessed by Hart. This book is a real pleasure to read, and I recommend it to everyone interested in Dr. Reiner's career.

This book represents a missed opportunity. Mr. Morgan's very thorough research pays off handsomely in his account of Reiner's earlier career, which is undoubtedly the high point of the book. Unfortunately, much of Morgan's treatment of Reiner's later years, from about his time in Pittsburgh to the end of his life, seems oddly dry, with numerous details that never coalesce into a convincing whole. The latter portion of the book discusses Reiner's musicianship but amounts to little more than an extended yet curiously superficial review of the conductor's discography. It's clear from the way Morgan writes that he has little to no experience either as a trained musician or as a music world insider, which Reiner's prior biographer Philip Hart was. This leads to a rather clunky, one might even say "out of tune," overall effect. The book as a whole also needs more attentive editing in order to make it better-written and -organized on its own terms. Many times a single topic will be discussed or touched on in multiple places, sentences and paragraphs cry out for repaired word-order or simple coherence, and--worst of all--Morgan often comes across as being more interested in pointing out flaws or mistakes in Philip Hart's biography than he is in simply doing a better job. This pettiness does nobody any favors. While Hart's account has its limitations, Morgan's is not any better, just different. The two taken as a whole provide the portrait that each separately tries to but cannot. All told, a mis-fire.

As Dr. Reiner conducted the first Chicago Symphony Orchestra concert I ever heard, I have held a fond place in my heart towards him. Therefore it is a treat to have this more analytical biography of the musical life of this great Hungarian-American conductor to accompany Philip Hart's 1994 "Fritz Reiner: A Biography", which was rather anecdotal in its approach. Morgan has also blessed us with his detailed information on the Reiner recordings, which for the standard repertoire, as well as for most of the orchestral works of Richard Strauss, and also some surprise offerings, my favorite being Alan Hovhaness' "Mysterious Mountain" Symphony No.2, has created one of the most important American archives of classical musical interpretation, ranking finally, I believe, in importance even above that of the recorded musical legacy of Leonard Bernstein. Hopefully still more of the older commercial recordings and the taped live performances of Reiner with various orchestras over the decades will be recovered, engineered, and released on CD (or whatever format the future holds for us) - Kenneth Morgan has gone the full measure to document those issued to date.
