I expected more from the book...it was not as in depth as I would have liked. A longer book is needed on the subject.

This book is so basic as to be worthless to all but the most green rock hound. Even then, it is more likely to confuse the person rather than help them. The descriptions are generic at best and living in one of the places vaugely described, I could not see where the info would even come close to narrowing anything down. My opinion is that this book should be passed up in favor of better books. I give it a 1 out 1000 possible points.

Midwest Gem Fossil & Mineral. & Mineral.Fast deliver, just as described.Very informative . love it love it love it.love it love love.

This book has some good history information but lacks detailed directions to find 'mining' sites. I tried to find several suggested fossil areas only to end up driving around not really sure if I was in the correct area. Maybe if you are already familiar with a certain location, you would understand the vague directions.

North Brother Island: The Last Unknown Place in New York City

Review

“This stunning book captures a nearly forgotten corner of the city. Seemingly held apart from the urban rush of change, North Brother Island nonetheless reveals its layered history. In its latest incarnation, native and non-native species vie for precious island space. Amid the ruins, we find an essential New York story.” (―David Stradling University of Cincinnati)Remnants of society’s anxieties about immigrants and epidemics still peek from the overgrowth of North Brother Island. Most New Yorkers likely will never get to explore its 40 acres first hand. Yet all should know its story--and the haunting beauty of its ruins. Payne and Mason’s North Brother Island: The Last Unknown Place in New York City is an elegant tribute to a secret too good to keep. (―John Waldman author of Heartbeats in the Muck: The History, Sea Life, and Environment of New York Harbor, Revised Edition)“This richly illustrated and aptly titled work takes the reader on a fascinating journey through the remarkable and varied chapters of North Brother Island’s history.” (―Edward T. O'Donnell College of the Holy Cross)“A gorgeous book: The uncannily moving photographs by Christopher Payne do full justice to North Brother Island’s haunting air of mystery, its unique play of presence and absence. The supporting texts helpfully elucidate the enigma of such wildness, abandonment, vegetative luxuriance, and architectural ruin existing in the midst of New York’s ultra-urbanist environment.” (―Phillip Lopate author, Waterfront)In haunting photographs and poignant text, “North Brother Island: The Last Unknown Place in New York City” (Empire State Editions, Fordham University Press) captures the character of this barren East River outcropping roughly between Rikers Island and the Bronx. . . The lushly illustrated book includes photos by Christopher Payne; a history by Randall Mason, a University of Pennsylvania preservationist; and an essay by Robert Sullivan, the urban anthropologist (the author of 'Rats' and 'The Meadowlands'), who writes that North Brother Island, 'draped in its forgottenness,' is 'a place that helps us see the rest of the city more clearly.' (―Sam Roberts The New York Times)Among a painter’s or a photographer’s challenges is to make us perceive three dimensions in an image rendered in only two. But Chris Payne takes us a step beyond. His subject is the fourth dimension: time itself. North Brother Island: The Last Unknown Place in New York City doesn’t merely document a forgotten place. It shows past mingling with present, dissolving toward a future that leads not forward, but back―back before we ever marked this world. The circular sensation suffusing this work is at first unsettling, then transcending. We have been here. Gently, we will pass on. In our stead, all will renew―and, as Payne artfully shows, quite beautifully. (―Alan Weisman author, Countdown and The World Without Us)

About the Author

Christopher Payne, a photographer based in New York City, specializes in the documentation of America’s vanishing architecture and industrial landscape. Trained as an architect, he has a natural interest in how things are purposefully designed and constructed, and how they work. His first book, New York’s Forgotten Substations: The Power Behind the Subway, offered dramatic, rare views of the behemoth machines that are hidden behind modest facades in New York City. His second book, Asylum: Inside the Closed World of State Mental Hospitals, which includes an essay by the renowned neurologist Oliver Sacks, is the result of a seven-year exploration of America’s vast and largely abandoned state mental institutions. Asylum was winner of the Ken Book Award of the National Alliance on Mental Illness/NYC and was named one of the “10 Best Art Books” by New York Times critic Holland Cotter.

This "coffee table" book answered so many questions I had formed when I lived in New York City several years ago and I plan to take the brief tour when I return. Who would have known that so close to the urban rush of the City, there is this paradox from the past! The myriad photos and the poignant story are truly gifts to everyone who has never considered the possibilities of seeing a glimpse of how "we" might have found some of this area a hundred years or more in the past. My ancestors came to Long Island from Halifax in the 1600s and I can now really appreciate the natural beauty they must have seen as they landed on the shore and began to explore their newly chosen homeland. This book is truly a work of wonder - not your everyday reading selection by any means, but a generous gift for the imagination and appreciation of those of us who seek to know and understand our past from the viewpoint of the what we see now! Thank you 7-great grandparents for coming to New York!

GREAT READ. HISTORY OF MY CITIES EAST RIVER ISLANDS. I LIVE ON ROOSEVELT ISLAND AND NORTH BROTHER IS NORTH OF ME WITH AN INCREDIBLE HISTORY.

I spent the first 4 years of my life living on North Brother Island. My father was going to NYU law school at the time and he worked part time at the ferry station. I went to a preschool that was available for the children of service people who were going back to school on the GI Bill. Although I live in California, when I return to visit NYC, I always take the Circle Line Tour so I can once again see North Brother Island. The pictures and narrative were wonderful. I only wish there was more information/pictures about the island's brief history as a refuge for our WW !! veterans and their families.

I never knew this Island existed! I love hidden away places and empty old houses. What fun to read about North Brother Island and see the picts.

Fantastic!

Beautifully done book. Great photographs. We written. If you're into history in the present, this is a book for you.

I have been on the "spiritual path" for about 10 years now. I have had many spiritual experiences: past lives experienced in meditation, merging with cosmic consciousness and I even watched Joel (the name given to this form at birth) die (ego death). Even with experiencing profound realizations I have had a big challenge in communication. Namely I have always wanted people to listen to what I have to say. I end up talking very fast (usually because I feel like I need to get everything out before someone interrupts me) and have always wondered why people don't really listen to me? For these communication challenges and many more are what led me to this book. I wasn't even looking for a "spiritual communication" book, but now I understand even better that communication is one way our realizations as a human being may be actualized and lived in our life. This book isn't really "spiritual" per-se, but does have fundamentals based in the Buddhist tradition. The following section blew me away with an insight I had never heard before: "We communicate to be understood and to understand others. If we're talking and no one is listening (maybe not even our own selves), we're not communicating effectively." These two sentences slapped me awake. Listening to myself while I talk? I had never heard of that concept said before. I thought talking meant I was supposed to talk..100%! This talking, without myself actually listening to the words coming out of my mouth has gotten me into quite a bit of trouble in communication. I see now that people don't listen to me very much because they are a reflection of myself! I don't even listen to my own words coming out of my mouth, why would others? I have been practicing listening to myself when I talk, it is not the most natural thing, but I am learning.Right after these two sentences were these ones that mirrored my personal challenges in communication perfectly: "We all want to be understood. When we interact with another person, particularly if we haven't practiced mindfulness of our own suffering and listened well to our own selves, we're anxious for others to understand us right away. We want to begin by expressing ourselves. But talking first like that doesn't usually work. Deep listening needs to come first. Practicing mindfulness of suffering- recognizing and embracing the suffering in oneself and in the other person- will give rise to the understanding necessary for good communication."I also have the tendency to still judge others and have known for quote some time that this has been hurting my spiritual/human progress. The author suggests we practice deep listening, where the primary goal is to help the other person suffer less. This is a very simple suggestion, though what impact would it have on your life if you actually practiced this in every conversation? So instead of trying to be "right", to sound intelligent or gain approval from others as primary motives for communication, what if we substituted our own Being instead...full of compassion? Do you think your relationships would be transformed? I know mine would and see that offering compassion is the way I can connect better with others in communication and therefore, both others and I will be happier and better off because of it.These are a few highlights that really stood out for me. I am sure you have your own challenges in communication, that's why you are reading this review. I suggest that you push that little button called "add to cart", you can thank me after you finish reading "The art of communicating." Take care and best of luck with your progress to a more authentic way of communication.

I’ve read hundreds of books in my life. As an English major in college, an English teacher for six years, and simply a person who enjoys reading, I’ve consumed a lot of literature. This is the first book I have ever read that I wanted to go on and on forever. Reading this produces the same feeling as spending time with a good friend who always believes in your capacity to be the best possible version of yourself. It provides not just warmth and comfort, but guidance for forging deeper and healthier connections with everyone around you. It feels like a meditation, inspiring you to reconnect with yourself and embrace your thoughts rather than run away from them. In just 160 pages, the book offers countless approachable concepts, and you can apply them within your first few minutes of opening it. If you care about others, whether it is all others or a select few, this book should be required reading. It will help you fall in love with yourself and feel equipped to love the world. I want to buy a copy of this for everyone I know. Whoever you are, you need this.

I read the book in less than 3 days. Very helpful in picking your words and tone of voice when talking to friends, family or significant other during disagreements. Easy read. I'd buy it as a gift for high school level teens. It's a great way to initiate problem solving skills.

As I write this, Thich Nhat Hanh has just experienced a major cerebral hemorrhage. Knowing this makes me very mindful of his immeasurable gifts to humankind. This book is one of them. I will be surprised if I ever consider one of his books not worth wording, but this deserve to go to the top of your to-read list.

Although the author says you don't have to be Buddhist to understand this book,I'm sure it would help. I had to read several passages multiple times to get the point of what Hanh was telling me.That said, a lot of the principles presented here would probably help people communicate more effectively. I'm planning to try them to see.

This is a remarkably useful book. While we are taught how to read and to speak, almost no one learns how to listen properly. I can tell if you are a poor writer or poor speaker but neither you or I can tell if you are a great listener. Thich Nhat Hanh has found a way to help readers become outstanding communicators by learning how to be a better listener. Reading this book and following the suggestions that are within will transform the reader into an outstanding listener. When you learn to be this kind of listener all day long, then you will develop enduring, loving relationships with the most important people in your life. This will make you one of the most important and influential persons in your sphere of connections with family, coworkers, and community. This book is worth taking time to study it closely and master the Art of Communications.

I really enjoyed this book. I wanted to read it to help myself in communicating with others, as I am not always the best at communicating and this is great. This book isn't some traditional style of "self help". It really delves into Buddhist traditions and allows you to follow the path while being open to others. A++

So simple in its message but so powerful if you can live it.This is a book that works as a love instruction manual.
