Author Sherri Maret and illustrator Merisha Sequoia Clark brilliantly incorporate their Choctaw heritage into this multicultural, bilingual picture book that delivers a tale of magic in the style of the elders repeating the stories of their culture. From the historical timeline subtly portrayed in the illustrations, through the child's encounter with difficulties and emotions that she must work out for herself, to the joy of seeing a lifetime of love in a multi-generational family, this story will enthrall and delight parents, grandparents, and children of all ages. The text is presented in both English and Choctaw, with a small graphic border dividing the two.Elementary teachers and librarians will want to check the author's website for ready-made follow-up activities to use with students, including free downloadable worksheets with illustrations from the book. The book and worksheets together would also make great emergency plans for a substitute teacher to utilize. Highly Recommended --Joanne K. From the Author

The Cloud Artist came into being because I had a dream about it. In my dream I had written the book, got it under contract, and a publisher had released it. In the dream I received a phone call to tell me it was getting great reviews. I was so happy when I woke up I was close to tears . . . happy ones. I hope people appreciate this young, strong female character who chooses her own path in life as well as how she wants to use her artistic skills. The illustrator, Merisha Lemmer Clark, brought my vision of the cloud art to life and hopefully young artists will try their own hand at cloud painting on paper. I was so happy to have this book translated into the Choctaw language by Dora Wickson who is an official Choctaw Nation translator. I just hope children enjoy the book as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Being of Choctaw heritage, the book is extremely well written, illustrated, and translated into Choctaw language. I remember my grandmother mentioning young girls that were able to paint with the the clouds. It is a tale worth keeping alive and in the hearts of children of all ages.

I love the illustrations for this book! They bring to life this wonderful traditional tale. The story is sweet, and my six-year-old daughter really enjoys it.

This is a wonderful story with beautiful illustrations. It appeals to all ages of readers and listeners!

This is a beautifully written story my kids thoroughly enjoyed! After reading it, they had many great questions about Native Americans. Every school and library should have a copy of this book!

Beautiful story, beautifully written, and beautifully illustrated! Lessons to be learned in a beautiful story... the best kind of children’s book.

Awesome, Sherri! This book takes me back to my own Native American Heritage. My Great- Grandmother was Cherokee! Stories from our Elders are what we LEARN about not just our own family history, but that of our Nation. This is a fantastic rendition of Native American History, this is how we pass our Heritage on to the next generation. The fact that Sherri was able to connect with one of her own relations, makes it even more special. Having the translation in Choctaw is not just "nice", it's innovating, imagine the exposure Children of Choctaw descent have available to them! We see stories in Spanish, French and other Languages, BUT, Native American?? Wonderful Sherri!!!I am a great follower and Love ALL of Sherri Maret's books. Her stories have meaning and purpose, not just "cutesy"!! The illusrations are outstanding and coordinate perfectly with her material. Can't wait for what's next!! Well Done Sherri, Much Love and Success!!

As a school psychologist working in WA state where there are many reservations and diverse students this is a perfect fit for those who feel that many traditional children’s books do not represent them. I am married to a Native American and my three and four year old loved the story! I love how Sherri Meret weaves the importance of family and being true to yourself. It’s a beautiful wonderful tale and should be in all school libraries. My kids loved seeing the two languages and it created great discussions!

My 5 year old was inspired to draw her own "cloud art" after hearing this story! The words and illustrations have a lovely and peaceful flow and impart a clear message of staying true to oneself through all of life's stages. In my job as a children's librarian, I became aware of the need for more diverse books and more books that feature strong female characters so that all children can learn from and celebrate role models from a variety of backgrounds. Because of that, The Cloud Artist would be a wonderful and important addition to libraries and classrooms and will surely inspire discussion and creativity for many types of lessons.
