I picked this up for my son, it's an old favorite in my family and our copy was very beat up over the years. When I read it to him I was confused because it seemed short and to be missing pages. Turns out, they just removed all the dialogue between Fox and Knox ("is your tongue too numb to say it?", For example).Otherwise it's a cute and sturdy book, just not the full book as I expected.

One of my son's favorite Dr. Seuss books. Lots of fun to read, and lots of fun to watch the toddler giggle as the adult mangles his tongue the tongue-twisters.Posting a review to note: the board book version (which someone gifted to us) is heavily abridged, and not nearly as fun as the full thing. Happened to see it in the pediatrician's office during a check-up, and was surprised to find a longer (and better!) version. Went and bought the hardcover version from Amazon, and it is the whole thing. Get the original, not the abridged version. So much better.

Board book version is EXTREMELY abridged; around 2/3 of the pages have been removed.

This book was one of my favorites growing up. It's the best when you can convince someone else to attempt reading it to you :DI have been buying copies for baby showers and birthdays for my friends' children in the hopes that I can make their (my friends') lives more annoying (and wonderful).

We LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Dr. Seuss Bright & Early Board Books. We have quite a few that we've collected for my 3-year-old, but we bought this one for my 1-year-old's birthday. He enjoys the book. However, reading it to my 3-year-old is the best. He looks up at me like, "What are you saying, Mom?!" It makes him laugh. It's definitely a new favorite in our home.

My wife loves this book a must have if you love Dr. Suess. We bought this for our kids. They love to read Fox in Socks. Dr. Suess is a poetic genius. One of those books we will save and have for our grandkids some day!!;)

Husband and I are not a fan. Son (two year old) LOVES it, often asks to have it read. What are you gonna do, you know?

Love this book! I run the Tales for Tots program at work and the copy I had was my own from back when I was a kid (so, about 30 years old) and rather small. So when I decided to read this for story time I decided to a new copy. SO glad I did! The pictures were much bigger and easier for the group to see. I knew I would mess up reading this crazy tongue twister (and that's part of the fun, right?) so we made it a game that when I messed up the kids got to "buzz" me like in a game show (saying"MEEEEH!") and I had to restart the page. It took longer but they loved it and giggled their heads off. SUCCESS.

Since the publisher called this "material taken from Spillover" (Spillover is here: Spillover: Animal Infections and the Next Human Pandemic) I wanted to compare it to that wonderful book. In particular, if it was just a way to capitalize on Ebola news and fears, with little more than Spillover reprinting, it would be better for the reader to just GET Spillover!First, Spillover has over 100 pages on Ebola, including the 13 Gorillas primary chapter (vs. 12 Monkeys?) beginning on page 53. In fact, though, Ebola is peppered throughout all of Spillover in fine fashion, and given the little progress that has been made in the last few years (fruit bats, reservoir, etc.) one would assume that this new book doesn't have much new.Well, one would be wrong, as I was. While chipping away at my PhD in Molecular Biology and supercomputing, I worked on the weaponization, epidemiology and response aspects of Ebola (as you might know, Reston had an airborne component, though not humanly virulent in the sense of Zaire/Congo strains) and am still a contributor to Weapbola dot com, although my primary field is now robotics.Both technically and "story wise" this new book is well worth the investment, even if you have read Spillover. Quammen is one of the best Science writers still publishing today, and his books, blogs and articles are always page turners, with deep science woven flawlessly into the narrative. The book is current and up to date as recently as a couple months ago at this writing. Despite the wonderful detail in Spillover, and even with the lack of progress in Ebola research in the last few years, the "perfect storm" potential of groups like ISIS and the relatively robust Ebola lifecyle make this a topic well worth revisiting with the most up to date information, and although there are many new journal articles and even a couple new books coming out, Quammen has already proven himself to be a five star writer, and this is no exception.If you haven't yet read Spillover, should you read it instead, or both, if you're interested in this topic? IMO that depends on how deep your general interest is, because Spillover goes into detail on much more than just Ebola, but this new book does have more detail on the Filos. If you're in the field in any way, you do need both.Here are a few other classics in the field, from (my) selfish viewpoint on weaponization (Ken Alibek is a MUST from that frame):-- Beating Back the Devil-- Biohazard: The Chilling True Story of the Largest Covert Biological Weapons Program in the World--Told from Inside by the Man Who Ran It-- Rabid: A Cultural History of the World's Most Diabolical Virus-- Level 4: Virus Hunters of the CDC-- Lab 257: The Disturbing Story of the Government's Secret Germ LaboratoryFor top technical/ molecular- cellular bio detail, expensive but the "bible" is still: Ebola and Marburg Viruses: Molecular and Cellular Biology (Horizon Bioscience)... and of course the classic and now inexpensive "detective" stories of Richard Preston via The Hot Zone and Demon in the Freezer (The Hot Zone: The Terrifying True Story of the Origins of the Ebola Virus -- The Demon in the Freezer: A True Story).DO USE the "look inside" if you want to compare this new and outstanding entry by Quammen to Spillover, but my vote is that it's worth the investment even with Spill.

This brief book is a product of sections of his 2012 book Spillover and recent events. Accomplished author and science journalist, David Quammen takes the reader on a journey through the jungles of Africa in search of the reservoir host. This exciting 128-page is broken out into 21 chapters.Positives:1. Solid science writing. Well researched and engaging.2. The hot-button topic of the day.3. Quammen has a good grasp of the topic and writes with skill. It feels more like an action book than a standard-of-the-mill popular science book.4. The reservoir question had been tractable, in that case, and the answer had quickly been found: A native mouse was carrying Machupo into human households and granaries."9. Provides fascinating facts such as the fatality rates for various infections. Find out the total number of fatalities from the discovery of the first ebolavirus in 1976 through the end of 2012.10. This book's impetus was to take advantage of the high interest of this subject.In summary, a very good brief book on the Ebola virus. If you are looking for an accessible book that reads more like an adventure than a standard pop-science book you have found your match. It's interesting, engaging and provides some interesting insights on what it takes to track down a reservoir host. Perhaps a bit rushed to take advantage of the interest of the topic and lacking visual supplements but a worthwhile read. There is a cautious reassurance of the hopes in fighting this disease, coupled with a broader explanation of why this is not the last of what may be more, and, more frequent, outbreaks of such diseases in the future.

I am not a professional architect, although when I was young, that was my aim. I could not hope to write a better review than Mr. Mahaffy's about this book. I do, however, own every book Amazon sells (and some they didn't) by Christopher Alexander. They are never-ending sources of wisdom and hope for me. They live on my wisdom shelf, apart from the majority of my thousands of other books, and I turn to them for the sort of deep-seeing that is found in this book. I also find myself near weeping for joy at the depth of seeing, expressed in carefully-chosen words, that reveals the respect for the humans whose lives intertwine with the buildings, and the respect for a building that supports the leading of humane life.There are some "experts" who arrogantly assume that they, and they only, know what the rest of us "should" do, but Alexander makes the assumption that we are all experts in our own lives, and that we all have the ability to create truthfully and beautifully. We may lack the skills and processes to do so in the contemporary world, but we do not lack the impetus or talent. The work described in this book, as in his others, is essentially the very detailed equivalent of a sculptor's identifying and removing all the bits of marble that are not The Piéta, of getting deeply in to where the truth and beauty live. In describing the processes, both physical an mental, so minutely, Alexander gives us a blueprint or road map for manifesting our own abilities.I am saying this badly, and I'm sorry for that, but so much of what this book gives to me is not-yet-speech-ripe. This book, as have its predecessors, leaves me overwhelmed with joy. Instead of acting individualistically to put another silk suit in their closets, the authors appear to be struggling with how best to cooperate with the structure of the Universe. I can't tell you how very much I hope that many follow them in that undertaking.

Christopher Alexander's theory that our system of building creates lifeless, cheerless mediocrity seems proven simply by looking around at our buildings as they exist.At the same time, most of his problems seem to come from specific situations he faced in this project, which quite honestly seem pretty unique to it. For example, he wanted to start onsite design work before the land purchase was nailed down, by putting flags on the property. Understandably, landowners didn't much like this, and negotiators for the University felt it was disturbing their efforts to keep the price down. They eventually forged a compromise. Hardly the stuff of blood and guts-level fighting between two world views!Most of the real fighting was thanks to the unique structure of the project, where he had to deal with a general contractor unsympathetic to the way he preferred to work. The lesson is that if you want to do things his way, have a combined architect/contractor hybrid do the work. In this case, the architect takes the contractor's fee, and can use some of that money to contribute back to the project instead of pay inflated contractor profits. There doesn't seem to be much reason not to do something like this for Alexander-style projects, and that would eliminate nearly all the actual fighting faced by this one.The problems I was expecting to see, like regulatory agencies wanting very specific plans, and people misunderstanding his approach, seemed nearly nonexistent. Probably great deference was given to a major school who wanted to design its own campus, but similar behavior might exist for any major real estate developer with a good reputation.It is clear, from the numerous examples of feedback from users, that students, teachers and administrators alike love the project and the approach used to design and build it. System-A, whatever its faults, can work brilliantly and be a fantastic success. It takes a lot of work, but it is surely possible to hire Alexander's firm to create your own masterpiece.So why hasn't the Alexander-predicted revolution happened? Why hasn't he been able to design more than a handful of buildings since? This is a question he doesn't even ask, and to me, this is the greatest mystery presented by the book - if his approach works so well, why hasn't it spread after he's wrote millions of highly influential and persuasive words on the subject, participated in numerous projects, etc?He won the battle over the Eshin campus, but appears to be losing the war.Why?

Ever since Christopher Alexander produced NOTES TOWARD A SYNTHESIS OF FORM, his publications and lectures have been both provocative and constructively valuable to architects, students and theorists. You cannot be neutral when it comes to his strong, clear positions on questions of architecture. He can antagonize you intellectually, inspire you professionally, or assist you to escape into a different zone of the creative spirit. This reviewer has had both difficult and delightful encounters with Alexander's thoughtful assertions about how and why we should modify our design incursions on this singular planet.His latest book, "THE BATTLE for The Life and Beauty of the Earth: A Struggle Between Two World Systems", documents in both technical and philosophical detail the design, construction and occupation of the Eishin School, just outside Tokyo. The book discusses the importance of an approach which is different yet the same; new, yet age-old.It incorporates, but not intentionally, some of the most important architectural ideas of the second half of the 20th century. The rift between those who espouse architecture as the making of "place" ( including in their approach everything from preservation of community to historical symbolism to social reform) and those digital formalists who seem to care little for the former has increased in the past few decades. Alexander's school signals a transcendence of both of these and almost everything in between. Having visited the school long before this volume arrived from Amazon, this reviewer confesses to having experienced real pleasure, both sensory and intellectual. I ordered the book as soon as it was announced and I was not disappointed. I find it to be both challenging and assuring. Oddly enough there is a spiritual aspect to both the book and the built complex that will probably be difficult for some critics to digest, but if you want to recharge your intellectual batteries, read it.

Very informative. The author attempts to give an unbiased perspective of the rights of women for modern law. She does seem biased and opinionated to some extent but I think this is probably difficult to avoid when discussing women's rights and welfare. I used this in a political science course and felt it was good for explaining the current state of affairs on these issues.

I needed this book for a class. Otherwise I probably would not have ordered it. It does give good insight of how many issues affect women.
