Thirteen-year-old Bilal's beloved father is dying, and since he is convinced the news would kill him even more quickly, Bilal decides to lie about the political situation. With the help of his three closest friends, he keeps well-wishers, family friends, even his radical brother at bay, all to "save" his father the grief of knowing the truth. Master's writing is lovely and descriptive. He expertly conveys the poverty of Bilal's village. Readers can smell the mangos in the marketplace, as well as the filth, and taste the dust in their throats. But the tale is not all dark; the author captures the joy of being with friends and family, playing tricks on people, and laughing-all things that people of any socioeconomic status can enjoy and relate to. In A Beautiful Life Bilal tells the story of his small market town in India in the early summer of 1947. Bilal's father is dying. Bilal's father loves India. He loves all of India, and all the people of India; Muslims, Sikhs, Hindus alike. Bilal knows that India is about to be partitioned into three separate countries: East and West Pakistan for the Muslims and what's left of India for the Hindus. He's concerned that knowledge of the Partition will break his father's heart and he doesn't want his father's last days to be filled with heartache. In order to keep the knowledge from his father he fabricates a lie. Bilal and his friends then conspire to keep everyone away from the house where his father lays dying so that no one will tell his father the truth.The book is rich in the sights, sounds and scents of India. There's a beautiful description of one of Bilal's friends slicing and opening a pomegranate. The market is full of wonderful food. Banyan trees figure prominently. On the night of the Partition Bilal and one of his friends sneak into a building where a dance is being performed. Bilal describes the sitar music, tabla music, and a dancer with ghungroos around her ankles. He realizes she is dancing the story of India: the birds and the fish and the rivers and the monsoon rains.The book is also heavy with violence. As the time for the Partition comes closer, Muslim and Hindu groups escalate from skirmishing with each other to burning each other by tipping over barrels of oil and setting them on fire. The village is no longer safe for Bilal, but he will not leave without his father and he will not take his father out of the town that has been his home.The lie itself and the conspiracy surrounding it seems a bit like a construct used to tell the story. Perhaps the real story here is the lie, but it seems to me that the real story is India and the way in which the ancient country is being ripped apart. The reader never gets a complete picture of the politics involved in the Partition, probably because Bilal himself doesn't have such a picture. We know only that a beautiful and rich country and culture are being painfully divided as a result of political decisions.

This book was fabulous. A beautiful story about a family and the turmoil in their village during the time of partition of India.I felt as if I knew all the characters in the book, because the author did such a great job writing about them. I expected to like this book, because it got great reviews, but I loved it. It's rare that I cry reading a novel, but I did several times reading this one. I believe this was the author. Irfan Master's first novel, so amazing. I can't wait to read his next book.

I chose this book after seeing it recommended in a library journal to consider it for my advanced eighth grade English class. I will definitely be using it next year. The story is engaging and moving. It is well written. It deals with a number of issues well worth discussing -- truth, love, friendship, religion, and more. I think my students will have much to say about it and they will have read a fine piece of writing.

In 1947, India was partitioned off by the British to form Pakistan and East Pakistan (now known as Bangladesh). The choice of dividing the country on the basis of religion caused tremendous upheaval. Bitter infighting arose amongst the previously unbiased Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims. Suddenly India was no longer united but divided by religion, with over 1 million people losing their lives to the violence of the time.We are brought into this world of change in “A Beautiful Lie.” Bilal’s father is dying, and he doesn’t want his father to know the problems being faced by his beloved India. Partition is coming, but Bilal hopes if his father is kept ignorant of the news, he will die peacefully and not from a broken heart. He plans to lie about what is going on in the village and the world to make sure this happens.To help him in his lie, Bilal enlists the aid of his three best friends. They are all from different religions but work together to keep Bilal’s secret. Despite the antagonism arising in the village for those of different religions, Bilal and his friends stay close and loving towards each other. As the Day of Partition approaches, the unease in the village escalates into mob violence, with Bilal and his friends caught in the middle. Both he and his father love India and wish her to remain the same, but Change has come and there’s nothing anyone can do to stem the tide of violence.“A Beautiful Lie” does a very good job explaining what was going on in the minds of those wanting India to stay the same, and those wanting Change. Middle school students will learn much from Bilal’s story.

Anthony J. Sonny Magaña, EdM, is an associate vice president of Marzano Research Laboratory and director of the Educational Technology Division. He works with teams of teachers and leaders to support, enhance, and expand powerful instructional strategies with technology. Sonny has served in the field of education for thirty years as a classroom teacher, building principal, district administrator, state technology project director, author, speaker, and trainer. Sonny created and served as director of Washington's first CyberSchool, a successful blended learning program that continues to meet the needs of at-risk students in Washington State. He received the Milken National Educator Award in 1997 and the Governor's Commendation for Distinguished Achievement in Education in 1998. Sonny received a bachelor's of science degree in biology from Stockton College in New Jersey, a master's degree in educational technology from City University of Seattle and is completing a doctorate at Seattle University.Robert J. Marzano, PhD, is the cofounder and CEO of Marzano Research Laboratory in Denver, Colorado. This is a book that is an excellent companion to "Art and Science of Teaching". It is clear and provides a very good integration with the other book. It also has many different suggestions for how to do the integration. It covers all grades and allows for extension. It would be good for someone who is a novice or an expert at using technology in the classroom. This is a good book and is the book you are looking for if you have any questions about using technology in the classroom.

I purchased this book for a class and was pleasantly surprised by its usefulness. It references research based practiced and suggests technology integrations for every level of experience.

Book was informative wish it had more info of how it can relay to the arts.Not a bad read though.

Good book, the strageties in it are good. The technology is a little old but with the way technology moves, that can't be helped.

I expected to see a bit more research. Good resource for educators for selecting strategies based on need during planning.

This lightweight book lacks substance and depth.

I had some great results after after implementing the first three instructional elements with technology ideas included.

This book was assigned to me for a graduate level education class. The suggestions are not only elementary and basic, but they are not fleshed out. Additionally, much of the content is simply shoehorning old ideas into using a technology based replacement which often seems more time consuming and complicated. Instead of students raising their hands to ask question, they type them on IPads and then the teacher projects them on the board followed by a class discussion.

Does not compare with Chilton. Pictures are bad. explanations are unclear. Most of the information is hard to find. I was hoping to use it as I restore a 72 F100 I recently bought. I am finding myself using internet rather than trying to find anything in this book.

A must have for anyone who has these Ford truck. Lots of good info as always.

I love this book, the in depth walk through is what I need for my first time restoration project. It also has valuable information for the veteran mechanic. I love the fact that it is used and the popular areas of the book i.e. brakes are darkened from the numerous times that section has been accessed with greasy fingers. I bought my truck with no brakes at all, and this guide helped me get the old girl back on the road!!!

It's ok, but check your used bookstore first. This book literally came with a garage sale sticker on it for $2, but the price here was twenty-something.

Very general info on a lot of different older trucks. Detailed enough for most servicing applications .

All the information you need! For the most part. Basic repair and vehicle specs. Easy to use.

Mine is a 1969 F100 with a 360 and 3 speed manual. I am often frustrated by the fact that that this book does not acknowledge that there was a 360 option in "69. Seriously, Chilton, what's up with that? This works for me, but barely, and sometimes not.

Since it's a motor manual I don't "love it", but of course it's a Chilton manual so it covers everything and then some of what I might ever want to know about the systems in my truck. A must have!
