Book cake in ok condition, not as bad at I thought it would be, buying a used book. And a cheap book find for my class! As for the content, long chapters, and often having to re read over some. Mostly do to everything different going on in one section and long. But hey, means good info right?

Clean. No marks or writing in book. Arrived on time.

This book started off on a politically neutral tone by introducing such objective topics as utilitarianism and virtue ethics, and it does bring up interesting ethical questions. However, as one progresses into various areas of business ethics in this book, each controversial question is ultimately answered from a liberal perspective. The author does seem to try to appear objective by at least mentioning some points on both sides of an argument, but much more airtime is given to the liberal side, which persuades the reader into thinking that way. The author seems to over-simplify many counterarguments to a liberal viewpoint. Additionally, the sneaky persuasive tactic of using first-person voice when discussing two sides of a controversial question subtly puts the reader on the first-person side of the argument, which is liberalism in most cases in this book.Ultimately, it seems this book is an attempt by the author to provide a moral reconciliation between liberalism and capitalism, but it turns out to simply be political editorial for promoting liberalism.

I'm getting to the end of my semester with DesJardins book on Business Ethics. This is a lot more manageable than a hulking textbook with all the extras that I don't use (Ex: Practices Quizzes and Pictures). If you're going to be picking this up for a class, may I recommend sitting down and reading it front to back. The author does tend to relate back to previous chapters, and this can pose a problem when you aren't getting to the final chapters till the end of your semester and the author is telling you to refer back to chapters one and two.Overall, it is short, it reads like a novel and you could probably chew through it in one weekend and then digest it throughout the semester when your professor helps you develop the ideas from the book more thoroughly. This is a great guide to ethics for any business student who finds social responsibility an important factor in the modern world.

It arrived in good condition and accomplished the purpose. I got an A in the class. It was a required book, I didn't buy by choice, but it had good examples of business ethics.

Desjardins talks about previous related ethical issues that have occurred for huge corporations to help individuals understand the importance of moral actions in their everyday lives. The author challenges us to question how well we know our own faith and values in life. This book is very insightful and interesting to read. I recommend this to anyone that wants clarity or maybe even to have a reference guide on ethics in the work place, this is the book to purchase.

The best ethics textbook I have used. The case studies in this book are my favorite, and the book helps you develop better analytical skills.

I purchased this book because Henri Nouwen quoted from it in his book, "Spiritual Formation" and required his Harvard and Yale students to read it.The author, Jesuit priest Jean Pierre de Caussade, did not mean to write this book. It is a compilation of letters and talks written to French nuns under his direction. They cherished his words until they were published a 100 years later.Having been raised Catholic and lived in a convent, de Caussade's style was not difficult for me to understand. Those experiences may help to be able to contextualize his words. But so many phrases and thoughts are universal, applying today as well as 1700 France. This thought amazed me: "We only truly learn when God Speaks directly to us". He was speaking of the kinds of education, even on spiritual matters, we can pursue which is often used for inflating our egos. With words like this he encouraged the sisters to see the Divine in everything, all circumstances, constantly listening for the direction of God in all their activities, prayers, silences, sufferings moment by moment, knowing, like the psalmists, that there is nowhere we can go where God is not..In post- modern Protestant Christianity, as well as much modern medicine, it seems that suffering is not dealt with well as millions seek either the miracle or a pill to take away their pain. We relentlessly pursue our physical well-being hoping for a pain free life. The thought that God works through suffering for the good of people may repulse many, despite the reality no one has been born or lived without pain. De Caussade's thoughts about how God uses both physical and spiritual suffering to mature faith, are what I enjoy the most....Truth be told, though I cannot explain the beauty and power of this little mystical book. I hope you read it.

One of the most important spiritual books I have ever read, and I have read many. Ultimately, all spiritual and religious training is helping us to bring the Divine into the Present Moment of ordinary life. Serve here, now, and with whomever and whatever has been placed with you at any given moment. We think we have to 'do something' to be of service. All that needs to be done is to 'Be In The Presence' (as opposed to the secular 'be in the present'). One is about human senses and one is about infusing any and all moments with God's Presence.Don't be discouraged if it seems hard to understand. This book was written for the heart, and can be beyond the limited human intellect. It is a greatservice to read it and allow the text to do the work of expanding the heart. Bewilderment is the hallmark of spiritual progress and a sign of opening past what was previously known, into the great unknown. The mind cannot understand that which transcends it.

This is one of those all-time spiritual classics of Christian tradition! It would make the top ten of any list I would come up for the subjects of Contemplative Christianity or Mystic Christianity. So many hundreds of years ago de Caussade was talking about the infinite depth and power of the present moment. He did this long before Tolle's "The Power of Now" and the stream of other recent books on the subject. And he addresses this epicenter of mysticism with eloquence and grace!-Amos Smith (author of Healing The Divide: Recovering Christianity's Mystic Roots)

This is a compilation of notes by the great spiritual writer, which also imply the necessity of our surrender to God's Will, but more so related to carrying out God's purpose in our daily lives; but not day-by-day, but rather minute-by-minute, actually NOW!I found Kitty Muggeridge's translation to be better than others I have sampled. I found the entire book to be extremely powerful, more than what is translated for us as "Abandonment to Divine Providence." I know the translation had something to do with it, but the book also seemed to touch many of the areas which I needed to address in the spiritual life.I have recommended this countless times to people who want to live a spiritual life. It's one of those that must be digested line-by-line, paragraph-by-paragraph, with no hurry whatsoever! It's also a great book to come back to time after time!

I wasn't sure what to expect from "The Sacrament of the Present Moment", but was plesently surprised. Some of the sections of the chapters can be a bit cumbersome to read through. Let me encourage you to not give up. This book, along with Bro. Lawrence's Practicing the Presence of God is the answer to our perfection; our holiness. I read this as I was researching for my own book. The core of "Sacrament" tells us how Jesus lived - and how we can live a similar life. This is not a life of comfort and ease, but a life of surrender. This is the biblical defination of meekness: strength under control. Living in the present moment and practicing His presence requires that meekness. It takes much more strength to live this life than to live the life the rest of the world lives.Richard Foster wrote the introduction - his chapter alone is worth the price of the book.

Review

Praise for Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power “Fascinating and insightful … Many books have been written about Jefferson’s life, but few have created such a vivid portrait … Meacham immerses the reader in that period of history to explain Jefferson’s behavior during an era when the nation was as contradictory as he was … extraordinary … essential.”—The Associated Press“[A]ccomplishes something more impressive than dissecting Jefferson’s political skills by explaining his greatness, a different task from chronicling a life, though he does that too — and handsomely. Even though I know quite a lot about Jefferson, I was repeatedly surprised by the fresh information Meacham brings to his work. Surely there is not a significant detail out there, in any pertinent archive, that he has missed.”—Joyce Appleby, Washington Post“[Meacham] argues persuasively that for Jefferson the ideal of liberty was not incompatible with a strong federal government, and also that Jefferson’s service in the Congress in 1776 left him thoroughly versed in the ways and means of politics … Meacham wisely has chosen to look at Jefferson through a political lens, assessing how he balanced his ideals with pragmatism while also bending others to his will. And just as he scolded Jackson, another slaveholder and champion of individual liberty, for being a hypocrite, so Meacham gives a tough-minded account of Jefferson’s slippery recalibrations on race … Where other historians have found hypocrisy in Jefferson’s use of executive power to complete the Louisiana Purchase, Meacham is nuanced and persuasive..”—Jill Abramson, The New York Times Book Review“[Meacham] does an excellent job getting inside Jefferson's head and his world … Meacham presents Jefferson's life in a textured narrative that weaves together Jefferson's well-traveled career.”—USA Today “A big, grand, absorbing exploration of not just Jefferson and his role in history but also Jefferson the man, humanized as never before. [Grade:] A-.”—Entertainment Weekly“Impeccably researched and footnoted … a model of clarity and explanation.”—Bloomberg “[Meacham] captures who Jefferson was, not just as a statesman but as a man … By the end of the book, as the 83-year-old Founding Father struggles to survive until the Fourth of July, 1826, the 50th anniversary of his masterful Declaration, the reader is likely to feel as if he is losing a dear friend … [an] absorbing tale.”—Christian Science Monitor“Absorbing . . . Jefferson emerges in the book not merely as a lofty thinker but as the ultimate political operator, a master pragmatist who got things done in times nearly as fractious as our own.”—Chicago Tribune   “[Jefferson’s] life is a riveting story of our nation’s founding—an improbable turn of events that seems only in retrospect inevitable. Few are better suited to the telling than Jon Meacham. . . . Captivating.”—The Seattle Times “[Meacham] brings to bear his focused and sensitive scholarship, rich prose style … The Jefferson that emerges from these astute, dramatic pages is a figure worthy of continued study and appreciation … [a] very impressive book.”—Booklist (Starred Review) “An outstanding biography that reveals an overlooked steeliness at Jefferson’s core that accounts for so much of his political success.”—Kirkus Reviews “Jon Meacham understands Thomas Jefferson. With thorough and up-to-date research, elegant writing, deep insight, and an open mind, he brings Jefferson, the most talented politician of his generation—and one of the most talented in our nation’s history—into full view. It is no small task to capture so capacious a life in one volume. Meacham has succeeded, giving us a rich presentation of our third president’s life and times. This is an extraordinary work.”—Annette Gordon-Reed, author of The Hemingses of Monticello  “This terrific book allows us to see the political genius of Thomas Jefferson better than we have ever seen it before. In these endlessly fascinating pages, Jefferson emerges with such vitality that it seems as if he might still be alive today.”—Doris Kearns Goodwin, author of Team of Rivals “Jon Meacham resolves the bundle of contradictions that was Thomas Jefferson by probing his love of progress and thirst for power. Here was a man endlessly, artfully intent on making the world something it had not been before. A thrilling and affecting portrait of our first philosopher-politician.”—Stacy Schiff, author of Cleopatra: A Life"A true triumph. In addition to being a brilliant biography, this book is a guide to the use of power. Jon Meacham shows how Jefferson's deft ability to compromise and improvise made him a transformational leader. We think of Jefferson as the embodiment of noble ideals, as he was, but Meacham shows that he was a practical politician more than a moral theorist. The result is a fascinating look at how Jefferson wielded his driving desire for power and control."—Walter Isaacson, author of Steve Jobs "This is probably the best single-volume biography of Jefferson ever written; it is certainly the most readable."—Gordon Wood, author of The Radicalism of the American Revolution “This is Jon Meacham's best book yet.  Evocatively written and deeply researched, it sheds brilliant light on facets of Thomas Jefferson we haven't seen before, gives us original and unexpected new insights into his identity and character, and uses the irresistible story of this talented, manipulative, complicated man to bring us life lessons on universal subjects from family and friendship to politics and leadership.  The Sage of Monticello made a considerable effort to turn his life into a mystery, but in a splendid match of biographer with subject, Meacham has cracked the Jefferson code."—Michael Beschloss

THOMAS JEFFERSON: THE ART OF POWER, by Jon Meacham is a great read, I enjoyed it Prologue through Epilogue. It is lively, interesting and insightful. I have read quite a lot on the Revolutionary Era, including several other biographies of Thomas Jefferson, and even so I learned a lot about Jefferson in the reading of this book. However, there are elements of the book with which I take exception.Mr. Meacham states in the Author's Notes that this biography is, in part, a reaction to recent biographies of both George Washington, John Adams and Alexander Hamilton which have revised opinions of these three men, especially Hamilton. He writes, "Then came nearly two decades of highly acclaimed biographies of John Adams, Alexander Hamilton, and George Washington that understandably emphasized the virtues of their protagonist, often at Jefferson's expense"(pg. 507). He cites specifically Joseph J. Ellis's Passionate Sage: The Character and Legacy of John Adams, but I imagine he would also include in that list John Adams, by David McCullough and Ron Chernow's two most recents works: Washington: A Life and Alexander Hamilton (all of them highly readable, excellent biographies).Mr. Meacham does a good job--better than most--helping his reader understand that there was during the post-revolutionary period a real fear in certain quarters that the United States could revert to a monarchy. Not so well done in this book is separating over-heated political rhetoric from what Jefferson actually believed. The fact is, a man as unquestionably intelligent and savvy as Jefferson would have known the difference between hyperbolic political rhetoric-even his own-and reality. It is clear that by the end of Washington's second term Jefferson and the Republicans (largely whipped up by Jefferson and Madison) were frustrated and chaffing at the bit. Even then, I cannot accept, as Mr. Meacham seems to imply, that Jefferson put much store in all the monarchical conspiracy theories that had political currency at that time.On balance most historians seem to believe that it was Jefferson's actions and political maneuverings during the Washington administration which help ignite and escalate the overwrought, highly negative atmosphere that convulsed politics during Washington's second administration and beyond. However, Mr. Meacham does not see it that way. Rather he explains Jefferson's third-party maneuverings and obfuscations as a natural reaction to the situation in which he found himself and what, at his time, would have been expected of a man in his station. I did not completely accept this. Jefferson's relationship with Philip Ferneau and the National Gazette is not fully explored in this book and leaves the reader with the impression that Jefferson was only tangentially involved with the newspaper that regularly ravaged Washington and his administration. But at least Mr. Meacham does allude to the conection. What is a more egregious omission is any exploration of how duplicitous Jefferson (and especially Madison) became in dealing with Washington in his second administration.Although Washington knew and understood that he had political differences with the two men, he still considered them trustworthy confidants. He had no idea the degree to which, through indirect means, the two men were so actively working against him. Jefferson and Madison continued to allow themselves to be taken into Washington's confidence never once indicating that they were anything other that loyal friends. This I think is an essential part of Jefferson's character and should not be excluded from a biography of his life especially one whose stated thesis is to show how artful, skillful and subtle was his accumulation and use of power. The final difference I have with THOMAS JEFFERSON: THE ART OF POWER is the thesis that Mr. Meacham proposes at the beginning of the book and attempts to support throughout: that Jefferson's vision for American, which contrasted with Washington's and Hamilton's allowed him and his proteges to control the Presidency for 40 years with only one four year interruption by John Quincy Adams. It is, of course true enough that Madison, Monroe, Jackson and Van Buren were disciples of Jefferson. But Mr. Meacham's argument that Jefferson accomplished this feat by opposing and triumphing over the policies of Washington and Hamilton is not accurate. In fact, Mr. Meacham seems to believe that Jefferson was able to win the Presidency because, "He understood the country was open to--even eager for-- a government that seemed less intrusive and overbearing than the one Washington and Adams had created" (pg. 352).While it is true that Jefferson and his proteges could not wait for Washington to exit the stage, the country itself never gave that indication, not in the slightest degree. Had he run, Washington would have easily won a third term. Adams, of course, was defeated for reelection, but that was not a rejection by the voters of Washington. Adam's defeat was due more to yawning cleavage in the Federalist Party and the electoral advantage created by the 3/5 clause of the constitution giving a significant Electoral College advantage to states with large slave populations, than to any rejection of Washington, his policies or his style of governing. Moreover, what Jefferson did to consolidate his hold on power was adopted in deed, if not in word, the Hamiltonian idea that the country needed a stronger central government governed by a stronger executive. For all of Jefferson's concern over what he characterized as monarchical power grabs by Washington, Jefferson did more to increase the power of the President with the Louisiana Purchase than Washington did in his entire presidency. And that by no means was the only time Jefferson broadened and consolidated powers of the presidency. Where Washington had used restraint, Jefferson often resorted to expediency. Many such incidences are skillfully explored in this book. The inconstancy they pose to Jefferson's rhetoric are attributed by Mr. Meacham to "pragmatism." In reality, they were actions which if Washington or any other Federalist had engaged in would been haled as auguries of monarchism by the Jeffersonians. The part of this book I found most insightful and interesting is Mr. Meacham's discussion of the debt assumption crisis. I had always believed that Hamilton got the better of Jefferson in this bargain which both resolved the crisis created the debt incurred by the state during the Revolutionary War and sited the nation's capitol on the Potomac. However, Mr. Meacham does an excellent job of explaining all of the many and complicated subtleties, which seemed to be overlooked by other historians, which came in to play here. He argues persuasively how, even though Hamilton got what he wanted in the bargain, Jefferson also negotiated some meaningful concessions. The bargain struck between these two antagonists was actually much more balanced than I originally believed.Having pointed to a few differences with Mr. Meacham and his view of Thomas Jefferson, I very thoroughly enjoyed this book and will most likely read it again. It is beautifully written, meticulously researched and goes a long way to re-balance the modern image of Jefferson, reminding its readers the debt that is owed to the drafter of the Declaration of Independence and the Sage of Monticello.

Great Britain’s hold on its small colonies hugging the Atlantic shoreline was constantly being tested in the mid to late 18th century. A number of remarkable men, all at or near the height of their powers, led the separation from the British rule. Only two or three men made the difference in this intense struggle. Thomas Jefferson was certainly one of these. This superb biography of Jefferson has so many assets: it is relatively brief; it covers most of the important aspects of this complex man’s remarkable life; it leaves us with undiluted admiration for an extraordinary man; and it creates a tension, so much a part of America’s post-Revolution history, between the two major parties that struggled for early supremacy in the opening days of the American republic’s history. Many other historians have surveyed the same ground but few have captured the essence of Jefferson’s personality -- deeply thoughtful, hopeful for the future of the society that was being created, eminently fair but stubborn and occasionally searing, a marvelous friend but a relentless enemy. John Meacham makes a great contribution to understanding the nation’s early story in this history. The scope of the book is vast, covering all of Jefferson’s life, a life lived during the period of time when important events occurred back to back, crowding together from the Revolution to the early days of Washington’s presidency, the struggle between the Federalists, led by Alexander Hamilton, and the Republicans, led by Jefferson, the early expansion of the country westward across the North American continent, the arguments with Great Britain. Jefferson was on center stage for most of this. His instincts were clear and sure: liberty, personal freedom, fairness, stubborness and unyielding when under attack. In such a crowded life, the historian is faced with making choices. I would have wanted a fuller account of the election of 1800, which Jefferson barely won, defeating Aaron Burr by only two electoral votes; I would have liked to have had a more extensive discussion of his relationship with Sally Hemmings, whom he treated reasonably well but never was treated as an equal – a strange footnote to Jefferson’s life which, at least on the surface, was all about freedom and equal rights and the equality of mankind. The discussion of the country’s growing prosperity that enabled it to deal with British attempts to limit the success of the country could have been more extensive. In such a complex life, any historian, including Mr. Meacham, has to make choices. In my opinion, this is a very successful work of history in painting a full portrait of a complex and extraordinary man.

I'm not a Historian or an expert in Jeffersonian policy, but I was interested in Thomas Jefferson's life and accomplishments. This book provides an in-depth historical review that helped me to understand the political and social context during Jefferson's lifetime. Among the many historical facts presented, I was struck by the similarities between Jefferson's election in 1800 and the transition of power from John Adams' presidency, and recent events in the US during 2016-17. For example, an open supreme court position, struggle between State and Federal power, bigger vs smaller government were all in play at that time as they are now. Quoting singer Billy Joel, it's apparent after reading this book that "we didn't start the fire, it was always burning since the world's been turning!"

I began reading this book simply because, somehow, while I'd already read biographies of most of the Presidents - and many of some of them - I had somehow overlooked Mr. Jefferson. This book is not a hagiography - it acknowledges and discusses Jefferson's flaws - but it does something very valuable in how it gets across Jefferson's point of view. As someone schooled in the modern trend I popular writings about the Founding era, and who is more ideologically sympathetic to early Federalism than Republicanism, I had always bought into the caricature of Jefferson as the impractical dreamer and considered some of his antipathy towards his opponents in the 1790s and 1800s as basically irrational. This biography, by telling Jefferson's story in a plain and unadorned fashion, disabused me of such notions.

As a young minority female professional, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to take their career to the next level. This book explained all my long-time confusions around why I believe I have the expertise and experience to do the job but not being taken seriously at a more senior level or be trusted with a job at that level. This book just bridged the gap!My first hand experience is a solid proof that this book did the magic and really worked for me! I learned about I'm lacking "executive presence" from a networking meeting with a senior finance executive in the industry. Not quite fully understood what it means, I did some research on Amazon and bought the book. Turned out it's the best $12.24 I've ever spent! The book indeed focus more around women and minorities, which are exactly what I was looking for, and it has plenty real life examples, statistics and actionable advice. It mentioned a lot of common pitfalls that no one in your office will mention to you about. That's what makes this book valuable. I adopted advice from this book and I applied it to a series of interviews for a job which explicitly requires "executive presence" at a prominent tech company. My performance during the interview process blew the whole team away and I got this high-paying job that took my career to a whole new level! This is totally life changing! I can't do it without tips learned from this book. ROI is huge! The only complaint I had about this book is that the book uses a lot of old English, which makes it a bit hard to read, especially that English is my second language. But my Kindle makes it convenient for me to look up those odd words. Still it's not a deal breaker. Just a heads-up.

I initially hesitated to purchase this book, since I have a scepticism towards most of the self-help/management genre. I am very glad I picked this book up. It brims with pragmatic advice on the essential topic of Executive Presence. This book is not just for those pursuing positions of power in corporate board rooms. It is for anyone seeking to translate their hard earned merit into just rewards and career progression.Hewlett artfully balances personal reflection and anectode with relevant case studies and hard data to provide a credible and highly readable volume. She does not shirk from the tough issues faced by many in developing their executive presence.I came away from the book with a number of practical ideas that I incorporated into my engagement with stakeholders and the board level. Early indicators show encouraging results!I also found the sections that specifically addressed women to be extremely valuable. As a male responsible for the professional development of female team members, these insights will enable me to support them more effectively and be a better sponsor in terms of their progression. And yes, I have recommended the book to them as important reading.

When the book started it leaned heavily on looks and while the book makes its point, I felt it was beating a dead horse mentioning looks several times. I gave it 4 stars because there’s a lot of usable content. Some attributes I feel were rushed. Some parts went from one vignette to another to another teach us about the principles of EP except I was getting lost in what principle was being focused on. Felt similar at times. In general, worth the read.

Is an executive position part of your career goal? Do you have the necessary skill and experience? Are you wondering why you are not there yet?The subtitle of this immensely useful book, is “The Missing Link Between Merit and Success.” Based on my 22 years of working closely with people in executive positions, I know she has hit the mark – Executive Presence (EP) is the missing link. This is not the first book on looking and sounding like an executive, there have been many before. However, Sylvia Hewlett’s take on this issue rings true where other books I have read left me with a discomfort that something is missing from the explanation. There are two reasons for trusting this book. The first is that Dr Hewlett lived the problem she has tackled in this book. The second is that she has been able to do a piece of credible research that turns the “woolly and elusive concept” of EP into a clear, securely founded, practical model. “Which is why I wrote this book,” she explains.Dr Hewlett grew up in a Welsh mining community, had few clothes, no social graces and spoke English with a thick working-class accent. Despite her formidable intelligence, she failed her interview for a place at Oxford University despite qualifying, because she was so inappropriately dressed for the situation. (Not knowing any better, she had dressed like the Queen Mother!)She also qualified for Cambridge University and after the interview at which she dressed more appropriately, was accepted into the University. She taught Economics at Barnard College (associated with Colombia University) where she initially had difficulty convincing anyone she was a professor and not a student, and was not taken seriously by faculty. Aged 27, (which is very young for such a position,) she her hair waist-long and wore flowing ethnic skirts. “I now understand that my early struggles to command attention and respect in lecture halls and faculty meetings did not center on content or delivery (I was a clear, crisp speaker and knew my material cold), but rather centered on the way I presented myself.”If the first reason for trusting this book is the author’s personal experience, second reason, is the research conducted through the Center for Talent Innovation, where Dr Hewlett is President and CEO. Her research team conducted a national survey involving nearly 4,000 college-educated professionals. Included in the cohort were 268 senior executives. The research aimed to ascertain what co-workers and executives look for when they evaluate an employee’s EP.Without Executive Presence, no one attains a top position, lands an extraordinary deal, or develops a significant following. Executive presence is not a measure the person’s ability and performance, rather it is a measure of the image you project that you “have what it takes, that you are star material.”Each year the Concert Artists Guild hosts an international competition. From an applicant pool of 350 instrumentalists and singers from all over the world, 12 extraordinary young musicians are brought to the Merkin Concert Hall in New York City where a distinguished jury judges the finalists. What emerges with regularity is the importance of non-musical factors in the final judgement. Did the musician smile, exhibit confidence, make eye contact with the audience, and so on?The world of work is no different.Executive Presence is comprised of three pillars that apply across all industries, all business types and all economies. The specifics differ vastly. What is required in a high-end law firm is not the same as in a chain of supermarkets, a hospital, or and marketing firm. The three pillars are “Gravitas” how you act, “Communication” how you speak, and “Appearance” how you look. These pillars are not of equal importance. “Gravitas” was identified as mattering most by 67% of the 268 executive in the survey. “Gravitas” implies knowing your field exceptionally well.“Appearance” might seem to be highly important from my introduction to this column, but it is not, rated only 5% of what makes up Executive Presence. “Communication” was rated 28%.Gravitas is not only projecting intellectual horsepower, but also having the confidence and credibility to get heard and accepted. Gravitas has six components. The first is confidence and projecting “grace under fire”. It is when under attack that this element of EP shows. We know we are in the presence of a leader when he or she remains calmly in control in the most difficult of circumstances. Then there is decisiveness, holding to a carefully thought through position and being threatening if necessary. Behind this is integrity, being able to “speak truth to power,” where others are not. While decisiveness and confidence signal conviction, courage, and resolve in a leader, when these are not accompanied by empathy, they look like egotism, arrogance, and insensitivity.A leader’s reputation needs to be nurtured and guarded because it goes before one has even appeared. Finally, leaders need a vision.Effective communication, the second pillar of Executive Presence is critical. As I have written a number of times in the column, a brilliant idea poorly presented sounds like a poor idea.A great comfort emerges form the research conclusions on Appearance, the third pillar of Executive Presence. Appearance is defined as “grooming and polish” rather than “physical attractiveness” or “body type” according to the respondents. These, fortunately, can be corrected where “physical attractiveness” or “body type” usually cannot.“Crack the EP code you’ll be first in line for the next plum assignment and be given a chance of doing something extraordinary with your life,” asserts Dr Hewlett. To do that, read this book. It is an easy read full of accounts of familiar business executive and other leaders. The book will keep you engaged as you learn this most crucial lesson.Readability Light -+--- SeriousInsights High -+--- LowPractical High -+--- Low

If you're completely clueless about EP, then this book might be worth your time. However, if you actively think about these thibgs but have issues applying them, you'd better spend your time doing something else. The book is built mostly on anecdotes and opinion polls with senior managers. However, this approach assumes that they know what they value which is quite unlikely. The author is clearly a fan of story telling but what may work well in a lecture becomes shallow in book form. In essence, the actual content in this book would easily fit into an article rather than a book.

#478,423 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Here is a very general and rather dry chronology of the institutional development of the Jesuit order, but very little human history. The main takeaway is a catalog of Jesuit missions in various parts of the world, how many schools and where, how many Jesuits in the aggregate. Maybe the author was constrained by length, but even the dramatic events -- Jesuits of the Counterreformation, Jesuit martyrs of North America, how the Jesuits have met the sexual scandals -- are given short shrift or no mention at all. What were those "spiritual exercises" of St. Ignatius? What was it about Francis Xavier which made him such a popular saint? Where is the famous confrontation between philosopher-atheist Bertrand Russell and the Jesuit Frederick Copleston? And since we now have a Jesuit pope, the lack of more than a cursory look at the "personal" relationship between the order and the popes -- a unique relationship -- seems a glaring fault. In any case, the updating seems hurried and tacked-on.Yes, as Father O'Malley says, the history is very long and complex, and doubtless there is admirable humility, if not publishing constraint, at work here, in not singling out a few stories, when hundreds, or even thousands are worthy of note. But the point of telling a few stories -- arbitrary as that may be -- rather than none, is to flesh out, to humanize, to evoke empathy in the reader, so that the message of what it means to be a Jesuit can be communicated. Alas, there is precious little to be found in this thin work.

This book is very easy to understand and provides a great amount of detail of the most important historical elements about the society of Jesus. It is an excellent resource book for anyone who seeks to understand the complex cities of the society of Jesus.

Well written and proves interesting insights about the Jesuits and why they are so controversial. Amazing how they have been able to "recreate" themselves many times over the past 500 years. I recommend the book especially for those who have attended Jesuit Preps or Colleges.

I read this book on the plane coming back from Atlanta as I was preparing myself for an Ignatian pilgrimage to Spain in a couple of months. What I like about most books I read by Jesuits is that they lead right away with the purpose of the book. This book is no exception. The book is to “provide in almost skeletal form the basic narrative of the origin, development, triumphs and tribulations of the society of Jesus up to the present”. Secondly, “to provide through almost arbitrary choice descriptions in detail of a few undertakings”. I will abide by those guidelines. The relationship of the Pope to the Jesuits is investigated in the Preface as a way to understand how Jesuit will interact with this Pope. The Pope’s own relationship with the Jesuits has not been without bumps. He called the Superior General of the Jesuits and they talked about the importance of their structure and how it will be played out. The Jesuits Rescue Service which operate in 47 countries and serves 750,000 people. The Jesuits would like to double there service in this area by 2020. In the United States the Jesuits are attempting to provide quality education for all through their Christo Ray schools. The Jesuits have begun Arupe College in Chicago to assist financially disadvantaged students to move on, and finish up their schooling at Loyola University. This is often a complicated task as all the variables confounding the issue need attention by the student and their professors.Returning to the Foundations of the order, the reader sees Ignatius in Paris around 1528. He is in union with 6-8 men who consider themselves, friends in the Lord. The first major thing they did together was to take a trip to the Holy Land. As it is for most of civilization including myself, it made a significant difference in their spirituality. They banded even more together to create the Formula to submit to the Holy See. With the publication of this document, the Society of Jesus came into existence on September 27, 1540. The membership grew by leaps and bounds and 16 years later when Ignatius died there were over 1000 members. They engaged in the same ministries of other orders: preaching and hearing confessions. Different from other orders, the Jesuits did not wear a distinctive habit and they retained their family names. Ignatius gave himself to a severe practice that included long hours of prayer, fasting, self-denial and other austerities that would be considered harsh even at that time in the history of the Jesuits. The Spiritual Exercises became an important part of the Jesuits daily life. The purpose of the book was to get in touch with themselves and to get in touch with the God within. This was to help to create a deeper spiritual life. These exercises gave a structure for the lives of the novices who were joining the Jesuits. From the spiritual exercises came the Retreat. This retreat was beyond the rites and rituals already established but were a way of deepening their relationship with Jesus. Their schools proliferated in an almost mystical fashion. They wanted to teach all socioeconomic classes and intended to keep the doors open to all, however, many of the students were from the upper class. The Jesuits created lectures on a book of the Bible or some topic of interest to all. They would sit in the congregation and the people listening would sit in front. The Jesuits had a structure that assisted all in loving and serving God more deeply.Another person of importance to the foundation of the Jesuits was Fr. Canisius who founded 18 schools in the area around Germany. The Reformation made inroads around the area and into Poland, Fr. Canisius brought Catholicism back to the area. Brazil was another area that the Jesuits became successful in. The linguistics of the area made hearing confessions a problem as the native customs hampered the understanding of the different dialects. By the time Ignatius died, the relationship with the Holy See had disintegrated into a kind of chaos. The Pope wanted the Jesuits to say the Liturgy of the Hours but the foundational documents were the Spiritual Exercises. When the new Pope, Pius IV, made amends with the Jesuits and released them from the obligation of the Liturgy of the Hours, peace was established with the Holy See. The first century of the Jesuits went well and the Jesuits moved into the second with confidence. The work with the Japanese failed but that was an exception so they moved on with distinction. Their institutions in Latin America provided networks of support that assisted their work. The next 30 pages or so discusses the movement of the Jesuits across the globe. They made mistakes and were willing to do so. In 1773 by virtue of a papal brief, the Society of Jesus ceased to exist and by virtue of a papal bull 41 years later, it was restored to life. The Vatican Council II and moved the Society beyond certain positions it had formally or informally adopted in those circumstances, gave the society the mandate “to promote understanding and dialogue among people of all religious faiths. It took into account the great cultural shifts that occurred since the great restoration of 1814 and moved the Society beyond certain positions it had formally or informally adopted in those circumstance”I would recommend this book to anyone fascinated by the many different facets of the Jesuits. My interest and admiration of the Jesuits has been in the field of education but there is so much more to these holy men including our beloved Pope. After reading this book I understand more fully the wise decisions that all Jesuits are called to make.

Concise and informative. Brave and decent men who truly reflect Christ's teachings.

Good gift for person involved with the Jesuits.

I enjoyed reading smoothly. I loved it.

An excellent coverage of the ups, downs and ups of the Jesuit men and their congregation. May they continue to go out on mission throughout our world. They certainly cover countless fields. Very dedicated men. God bless them all.

This book changed my life, even as it confirmed things I'd felt in the course of 40+ years of personal research. This book is not only endlessly sourced and entertainingly written -- it contains important information about how to proceed into the post-Prohibition future of weed in America. I love the distinction between stoners and cannabists -- and celebrate Dolce's idea that, in order for cannabis to become part of the mainstream, more people have to own their personal use in a public way.

Brave New Weed may be one of the most informative, entertaining and thought provoking books I've read. Over the years I've digested many articles about recreational and medical cannabis, only to be confused by the huge amount of nuances and the opposing opinions of old school thinkers versus innovators in medicine and culture. As a parent of teenagers, i'm confronted with having to talk to my kids about 'pot'. Brave New Weed gave me a complete understanding of the history, the bizarre circumstances that led to its prohibition, the amazing discoveries of its medical benefits recently validated as well as weed's recreational utility as opposed to alcohol. Considering the topic touches strongly on a hippie culture that I long ago abandoned, science that outright confuses me, and politics that completely frustrates me, Joe does an amazing job of helping to understand a very complex situation. Joe's anecdotes and brilliant perceptions make the book entertaining from the first page to the last. I recommend this book to anyone who's a former casual user looking to rediscover the attributes of Cannabis as opposed to alcohol and to anyone who is a parent and wants to give their teenagers a genuine understanding of the benefits and liabilities of this plant. The book also gives a unique view into today's popular culture. Joe absolutely makes the case that those opposed to cannabis will inevitably be on the wrong side of history.

As of this writing, I still haven't done much of anything with cannabis. I had an edible form (a drink) on a visit to Vegas and I've started trying CBD for anxiety and sleep regulation. But that's it.I was raised to think of pot as a drug and as a bad one. I knew one stoner personally and he wasn't anything I wanted to emulate. But this book changed my perspective immensely and made me do even more research. The medical opportunities are just too many to ignore. The potential to use a plant instead of an engineered drug for ailments and maladies feels obvious.Mostly, I feel lied to. I feel like Reagan Era bullshit clouded my view on cannabis and Dolce did a lot to open my eyes to some possibilities.Question your beliefs. You might surprise yourself.

This book is enjoyable to read, informative, and very well researched. I learned a lot about cannabis and see that there is still so much more to learn about this amazing plant/substance. It takes the fear away from what has been fed to us through media, propaganda, misinformation, etc. I no longer believe what I used to believe about it and it makes me more curious as to what is in store for the future of cannabis and hemp use. Who knows? The demonization of cannabis has slowed down it's ability to help millions of people. Now, maybe we can move forward to discover how it can be used to change the world for the better.

In Brave New Weed, author Joe Dolce weaves a fascinating tale of the twisted history — and even more twisted pretzel logic — behind marijuana prohibition. It is a tale that, depending on the chapter, will make you laugh, think or pull your hair out in frustration.Dolce’s work, published Wednesday, is equal parts travelogue, existential discovery and historical exegesis. But mostly it is a well-spun narrative and a damn fun, breezy read about the ubiquitous weed.Dolce is not a cannabis expert — well, he wasn’t one before he started his global pilgrimage. But by the end of the book, Dolce writes with clarity and expertise about the plant and its utility to mankind. Dolce attacks the topic with a journalistic rigor that will appeal to readers looking for trusted agent to tell the truth — dogma and talking points be damned. And make no mistake about it: Dolce’s bona fides as a journalist are solid. He is the former editor-in-chief of Details and Star magazines and now CEO of a media training business. He has spent a career careening from big story to big story. So, what makes a prominent national journalist write leave his cushy editor’s gig and pursue a story about cannabis?“I was at a crossroads, really,” Dolce said in an interview from his home in New York. “I was burned out and bored after years as a magazine editor. My 16-year relationship was over. And, well, I wanted to challenge myself.”As he writes in the book:"I was, for the first time in two decades, adrift, primed for change, ready to dance, drink champagne, recharge my sex life, and reinvent the way I worked. My entire life was in need of a rethink, my vices included."As the book opens, Dolce details how a family member (a cousin) proudly showed off his green thumb by revealing a small, secret indoor marijuana grow. That seemingly innocuous encounter with his cousin’s weed was the spark the journalist needed to embark on his journey to “tear down the cannabis closet” and seek answers to the questions we didn’t know we should ask.And the journey took him zig-zagging across the globe, including:* Amsterdam: Where he visits the world-famous coffee shops and witnesses the ultra-competitive annual Cannabis Cup.* California: Where he tracks down the self-proclaimed “fairy godfather of medical marijuana,” San Francisco’s venerable rabble-rouser Dennis Peron. Dolce also runs into George Zimmer, the founder of Men’s Warehouse. You will get a chuckle from this episode. I guarantee it.* Colorado: Where he sees what “The New World” of weed looks like after legalization. Dolce arrives in the Mile High City mere weeks after the new laws passed allowing any adult in the state to enjoy the herb without fear of arrest. He witnessed the birth of an industry and the awkward first steps of childhood.* Israel: Where he sits down with Dr. Raphael Mechoulam, “the scientist who cracked the chemical code of cannabis a half century ago and then discovered the endocannabinoid system in the human body with which it interacts,” as Dolce describes the good doctor. Dolce’s lesson on endocannabinoid science is deftly written in this chapter. If you are seeking a layman’s description on how marijuana works, buy this book. Like the excellent editor he is, Dolce takes the doctor’s scientific explanation and boils it down to its essence. There are other stops along the way — the author’s telling of his side trip to Bodega Bay is alternately, hilarious and touching — but throughout the odyssey, Dolce is continuously teaching the reader about the plant’s history in all its glory and vilification. One of the most enlightening parts of the book is Chapter 10, in which Dolce spells out his Four Enhancements. It is a chapter that could be the impetus for yet another book. Here, Dolce channels fellow cannabis enthusiast and astronomer Carl Sagan:“I do not consider myself a religious person in the usual sense, but there is a religious aspect to some highs. The heightened sensitivity in all areas gives me a feeling of communion with my surroundings, both animate and inanimate. Sometimes a kind of existential perception of the absurd comes over me and I see with awful certainty the hypocrisies and posturing of myself and my fellow man. And at other times, there is a different sense of the absurd, a playful and whimsical awareness.”In Dolce’s view, “there is little doubt that it affects the way we see our place in life’s grand order. This enhanced receptivity, not to mention insight, empathy, and awe, are but a few of the cognitive functions that cannabis underscores.”He then delivers a cogent argument about the spiritual or otherworldly aspects of the herb and The Four Enhancements:1. Receptivity2. Deep Focus3. Insight4. Intimacy, Empathy & SexThe chapter is a delightful diversion and a reading experience that should be performed twice: before a session and again after a few tokes. If cannabis is not your thing, the enhanced experience is optional. Trust me, you’ll still benefit from the conversation. And that is what Dolce has created in Brave New Weed: a conversation. He writes as if he were you’re slightly smarter, funnier, cannabis-loving friend just having a conversation.Whether this is your first foray into the emerging cannabis book genre or if you think you know all there is to cannabis sativa, this is a book worth buying. If your are cannabis curious, your questions will be answered and you may be compelled to continue your education in the field. If you are serious cannabis connoisseur, you’ll learn a few things. And you will enjoy the journey.

I have already bought 3 copies and gave them to people I care about, extracting a promise to read it.Will probably do more of the same.Keep buttonholing people, "Have you read this? Please, do!!!". Yes, I am that kind of nudnik.I do need to mention that I have never tried cannabis, or anything else stronger than Benadryl. But in a year it will be legally available. Then we shall see.Dear Joe, by now I feel like I know and love you, thank you so much for doing the research and writing the book.
