This story has the pacing, action and believability of a comic book. I like that the author doesn't take himself too seriously. It allows for the plot to unfold in a nice, fun carefree manner. If you are a stickler for intricate plots, deep character development and totally plausible scenarios even if only by a razor's margin, you probably won't like this story much or at all. If you find fun, absurd movies like the Fast and Furious franchise or John Wick series entertaining, you'll like this story. Although, the actual plot shares more in common with a movie like Enemy of the State than those two movies, there's one moment in the book that may have actually been inspired by one of the more recent Fast and Furious movies. I won't spoil it, but will simply say that thankfully, the scale and absurdity of the book's version is toned down exponentially compared to the film.There is plenty of profanity and violence in the story along with some strong sexual references. However, I found nothing too tasteless or perverse and some of the references are so exaggerated and over the top, they become laughable, but in a good way. You have to suspend belief quite a few times while reading and elements of cheesiness and cliche pop up from time to time but rather than eliciting an eye roll, it actually adds to the charm. It's a book with a plot that reads like a popcorn action movie. That's the best description I can give it. Thankfully, that made the pace fast and the story interesting enough that it kept me engaged nonstop from start to finish. It starts fast and never slows down, not even during flashbacks or other typically less exciting moments. I read the entire book in one rainy day sitting. For a free Kindle First book of the month, True Fiction delivered. It's not perfect but is fun, enjoyable and certainly worth a Kindle First selection if you're looking for something light and fun rather than deep and thought provoking. That's about as much as I can share without spoilers.
I am definitely going to be in the minority with my review. This story just took me ages to finish.While I loved the characters, they were very diverse and in some cases truly fun, the story just did not flow well for me.I did not enjoy the random jumping into previous dialogue, episodes, or books written by the main character, Ian. They were always at least somewhat tied to the main plot, but I found it annoying. I would much have preferred it simply be something Ian told as a anecdote, instead of a full on flashback with too much detail that was unnecessary.I was also really frustrated with how much time we spent from all of the different bad guys point of view. The main one that stands out to me is the pick up and one night stand of one of the assassins. It was utterly pointless and added zero to his character. As a reader I already knew exactly how morally bankrupt he was. To me it felt like fanservice. Oh hey since the two main leads aren't going to be having sex in this book, let's give the sex scene to assassin A. ARGH!The multiple points of view themselves were delineated well and never confusing, but to me most of them added nothing I needed to know to enjoy this book. Though I suppose it did make it longer.The extended details from the bad guys also made it really difficult for me to get into this book. I felt the beginning was so, so slow. I think it also felt slow to me because Ian and Margo took so long to get their s*** together and have any real fondness for each other. Don't get me wrong I really liked their individual characterizations and the ending of the story was fast paced and really brought out the best in both of them.The editing was nice and professional. No huge glaring typos, epithets, or repeated words, so yeah for that.I definitely would have given this story at least one more star if we'd gotten less inside the mind of so many sociopaths, and more story with Ian, Margo, and Ronnie. All of whom I think deserved a beginning to their story to match the fun and exciting ending.
I completely agree with other low raters who are thoroughly put off by the extreme and constant misogynism, sexism, vulgarity and pandering to those who find value in those qualities. Even if this is a spoof, as some reviewers claim, it is still deeply offensive and done with poor taste not humor. I was only able to force myself to get about 1/3rd of the way before deleting from my Kindle in disgust.When I find a book is a little too heavy with or in the sex scenes, but the story and writing are solid and engrossing, I can gloss over the sex scene(s) to get back into the meat of the story. This is not that case.I was looking for a new (to me) author to follow, but with this as my introduction to Lee Goldberg, it won't be him. :( Just grateful it was a free bite.
