First off, this book is very well written. Has a nice flow to it and is easy to understand. That said...This book reminds me of how the government will spend millions of dollars on a study to tell you something you already know: "After an exhaustive multi-year study costing $10 million dollars, we have concluded that ice is cold to the touch." This book is very much like that. I can't think of one single concept presented in the book that isn't already common knowledge. Example: Hard work and perseverance can make up for lack of talent. Who doesn't already know this? Here's another one: People who like what they are doing (passion), usually do better than those who do not. Every single point made in this book is about that profound. And, if you are looking for proven ways to increase you own "grit," forget about it--they are not there.This material might make for a good 10-page whitepaper, but it isn't nearly deep enough to make into a 300 page book. Because of that, there is just major filler in the form of stories about successful people.Lastly, like another reviewer pointed out, this book has a self-righteous undertone to it. The author burns a lot of ink making sure you think she's smart and important.I'll save you $20: The most successful people work really hard at something they like and don't give up.

I normally never post a review on Amazon, but in this case I simply could not stop mysefl from posting it, as I had great expectations about this book after seeying the TED talk of Ms. Duckworth and hearing a Freakonomics podcast with her. In the end, I was disappointed.Please also excuse grammar/ spelling, as I'm writing this from Russia and I'm not a native English speaker.This book tells us that grit (and not talent or luck) is essential for success in life.The reader will find multiple anecdotes on how so-and-so achieved much by perseverence, passion and not giving up.So half of the book is dedicated to showing a reader how important is grit for success (quite convincingly, but to my taste, way too extensively; couple of anecdotes and studies mentioned would have done as good as these several chapters). Along with anecdotes some (quite robust) scientific evidence is given.What the book lacks completely, is scientifically based advice HOW TO BUILD GRIT. As someone, who struggles to be gritty in my daily life, I had great hopes to find valuable hints in this book. There are a few, but very "soft" ones (like the author assumes they should work, but being honest with the reader, concedes that there is no evidence behind these tips).

I found this book to be the perfect hybrid of informative and motivating. If you're looking for a book that will help educate you as to what you should do in your life and how you can be successful doing it, then this is the book for you. It lays out chapter-by-chapter both the science and the steps you'll need to take in order to make changes in your life that will lead you to success or at least put you on the path towards it. The mix of anecdotes, profiles, scientific studies, and personal stories all combine to form a really easy-to-read and educational book that is laid out and displayed in a simple yet interesting way. Below I took a crack at the things I'm going to do now going forward as a result of reading this book:1. Define what success looks like (i.e., I want to get into politics and would eventually like to become a Senator)2. Clearly define my goals in terms of short-term, medium-term and long-term3. Assign myself stretch goals4. Reflect and learn from any obstacles or challenges or failures faced5. Begin deliberate practice in my field (repeatedly stepping outside my comfort zone and trying activities beyond my current abilities)6. Seek a coach and / or mentor7. Gather and then grow a support network of friends, family, and industry professionals8. Become even more obsessed / interested in my field and consume myself with news, books, articles, lectures, etc.9. Learn from others who are where I want to be10. Never become complacent or satisfied

I commend the author for her effort on this book. The stories of people with the ability to persist are lively and interesting, but the overall feeling is of reading small vignette style biographies of people who are smarter, better, and more talented than you are, with anecdotal insights sprinkled throughout.There's a measure of inspiration in her foundational message that, through hard work and persistence, you can become the best version of yourself. Her main point is that it's unlikely that you know your own limits, and that the act of striving against them each day can take you to an unexpectedly good place. However, the true value of this book would have been to teach us the best methods for increasing and maintaining our own grit, and to show that those methods are proven through research. Unfortunately, that doesn't yet exist because the research hasn't been conducted, except in a preliminary fashion.Because that answer doesn't exist, the book and stories are reduced to a collection of recitations of interviews of successful people, not unlike other business and self-help books. It has a dusting of authority from the author herself, since she has substantially contributed to the field. An interested reader can glean their own lessons from that material, in additions to the insights the author provides. Still, the book lacks true weight, and would be greatly served by an update in a few years as the author and her peers conduct more research on the subject.

I have purchased both this book and its companion for group therapy. They are approximately 90 percent the same content and I highly recommend you save your money and only purchase one or the other. Additionally, these books are extremely small and consist of workbook pages at the end. The authors ask you to copy and print the handout materials in the books for clinical use, but the page size is smaller than standard 8 1/2 X 11 and has a smaller font! No mention of the handout materials being available through the publisher as clinical text resources often do. I love the research, the premise, and the information but for this amount of money, I expect a book not a pamphlet essentially, and the ability to reasonably print the handouts.

This book was recommended by the therapist at the Cancer Center I have doctored with for 13 years. We are starting a Cancer Care Support Group at our Church and she felt it was an important book for us to have and read.She was right! I expect it will be very much a go to resource as we journey with the patients and caregivers along the way . Recommend highly !

I read this book cover to cover, twice, which is a lot considering it's over 600 pages. My first opinion is that the author had a lot of photographs of friends cars he wanted to publish. They are nice to look at but don't really add to the text, and would have been much better published in color. I would have liked to see more photos relating to the text rather than pretty car photos.Also many of the photos don't highlight the subject of the photo, which if you don't know what the item already looks like, makes it hard to find in the picture. The photos are in B&W and many from under the car, with a dirty undercarrage which makes the subject of the photo difficult to find, unless you already know what it looks like.Overall there is a tremendous amount of information contained in this book, but not in a manner that I could undertake a repair using just this book. Maybe that is not the intention of the author, but from the title "....essential companion" I was expecting something more along the troubleshooting-repair lines. I did have many of my questions answered by this book as I am a new 993 owner and the Porsche 993 is a complex car.

As a new 993 C4S owner I've found this book to be a virtual treasure trove of interesting and useful information. I'm constantly picking up and referring back to it, and I've read certain parts of it multiple times. Did I mention it's a HUGE book? Dictionary size, it's crazy. Although expensive, I would buy it again and would recommend it to other 993 owners.Having said that, a few nit picks:1) Did anyone edit this thing? In the first 5 pages I found 10 grammatical/spelling/punctuation errors, and it doesn't get any better from there. Seriously, anyone with a functional understanding of English could vastly improve this tome by going through it with a red pen. I find it almost embarrassing for the publisher.2) I wish the photos, at least some of them, were in color. I realize this would make the book more expensive, but it would really be impactful if even 10% were in color. I find it annoying when the author says in photo captions things like, "isn't the color of this example fantastic"...and it's black/white.3) Too much emphasis on Ruf. I understand the historical significance of Ruf and I agree it would be a mistake to not to include Ruf here, but there's way too much coverage, almost as the author feels that Ruf was a factory project a la Porsche Exclusive. But that's not the case. A modern version of this book would have too much emphasis on Singer and Magnus Walker as well. Significant, but I personally feel the book should focus solely on factory cars (w/ maybe a chapter dedicated to 3rd market builders/tuners).4) Comes across at times as an advertisement for what is obviously the author's shop of choice, which I won't mention here. I'm sure he felt he was helping them out, but it feels heavy handed and inappropriate in my personal opinion.Having said all that, I'm rating this book 4 out of 5 stars because I really do enjoy it and am able to overlook the few small issues I have with it. It's a great addition to my small (but growing!) Porsche library and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to any 993 owner or anyone interested in the last of the air-cooled cars.

This is the essential guide (see the title). It's easier to read than the dealer manuals and 1/5th the price. I'd love a bit more information (e.g. torque settings for everything) but that's the only reason I dinged this book one stars. I wanted to give it 5 stars, it's a must buy.

I needed a detailed source of information relative to this car!It is an impressive book that needs to be gone through in detail to be properly appreciated.Don't just skim it to get an overall impression; you will discover how great it is as you dig deeper.While there are many pictures, it is often difficult to know exactly where a part is located in the constrained space.A great help wold have been a few summariy diagrams, showing parts locations that would have been located at the beginning of the book.Overall, it is a mine of information and a great acquisition.J.P. If you buy this book, you better enjoy reading, the book is massive. The layout and organization is very good, easy to understand and the index makes it easy to specifically find what you are looking for. The only drawback is the book was written in Queens English which made it a little interesting when the book referred to such things as a "bonnet" instead of a hood, etc. The book provided the correct mix of technical info in easy to understand layman terms. You will not be sorry you purchased this book.

Overall, a good addition to the literature. Not so detailed that it stands ALONE as a repair resource, but with Pelican, Excellence, Panorama and the various web sites offering 993 information, adds more complete information for the do-it yourself mechanic. Of my reference books, this is perhaps the most comprehensive, specifically for the 993 (other than the factory manuals). An easy read, usually clearly written, yet at times too abbreviated. (Cabrio top repair, for example) First 100 pages deal with "styles" of 993 offered. Contains torque specs. Some info is nothing more than "owners manual" info. Nontheless, I am happy to have added this volume to my library!

I got a wonderful surprise Christmas present this season..an apple watch. I thought I could figure out everything myself since I own an I phone 6, a macbook pro, and ordered the FIRST delivery of iPads. Yet, I was caught by surprise. Maybe I couldn't figure out EVERYTHING. So I ordered Apple Watch for Dummies. I have read through the book twice and to find different solutions to Apple Watch questions and have found each answer to be well written and helpful. There are also numerous tips in the book for getting the most out of the watch, many of which I would never have imagined.If you are tech savvy, you don't need this book. For someone like me, it was money well spent.

Good review of the watch and how to customize each face. There were some cool things I picked up with this book. There are a few features that were not in this book that you will discover when you play around with your new watch, such as how to change you music album from a tiny dot in the upper right hand corner of the frame.

I would give 5 stars but I needed dummies book for Apple 3, as I need help with counting swimming laps. Wasn’t clear when I purchased book.

I like this manual although it is a little out of date. I was able to find nearly everything I wanted more information about. One thing I wanted to know about is what happens to a saved workout and I couldn't find anything in this book about this particular function.

It's always a hit-and-miss proposition when it comes to a good travel guide for the Caribbean and so it is with this book as well. It's not so much that it's "bad" it just isn't that good either. SInce I did purchase it for Aruba specifically it didn't bother me about the lack of detail for the other islands (I did a review of another publication for Bonaire a couple of years ago).I guess what I find lacking in many of the Frommer/Fodor books is the bias towards what the particular author liked as opposed to just providing info. For example: we did do the DePalm Island thing and since I had booked it prior to find a little blurb in this book on how she didn't find it all that big a deal, our group enjoyed it. That was a surprise to me because I felt like I had been taken after booking the non-refundable excursion and yet the 6 of us (ages 19 - 50) all found it to be just fine - expensive - but enjoyable nevertheless.So while I understand that what one person found stupid or not worthwhile doesn't necessarily translate into what you may enjoy, these books are somewhat of a necessary evil but are by no stretch the end-all, be-all of how you plan your vacation. One thing I will call out is the restaurant reviews were pretty accurate - so kudos for that!Lastly - as for the island itself...far too busy for this Caribbean traveler. Traffic in and around Oranjestad is THE WORST I have ever encountered. I will not make a return trip based on that nightmare. In ten years and 11 stays in and around the Caribbean, Aruba wins the award for worst traffic and least viable alternative for avoiding it by way of providing decent secondary roads around the city. I really feel that if you select the northern or southern end of the island, you're kinda stuck in the geographical area unless you want to spend 45 - 60 minutes negotiating Oranjestad.Your mileage may vary...good traveling!

Like most Frommer's travel guides, this is a generally informative, pocket-size guide with accurate data for general trip planning to Aruba. Great if that is your destination.However, the title is very misleading as most of the book is dedicated to Aruba, with only one chapter each devoted to the other two ABC islands. The minimal coverage of Bonaire and Curacao mainly point out differences from Aruba, but offer few details regarding the other island ammenities.Since I purchased the book in anticipation of a scuba trip to Bonaire, I found it of little use. There are other much better guides for Bonaire.

There was nothing in this book that was not available on travel websites for free. I mainly got it because i could not find much information on Curacao, and this book did not provide much value in that area. Same with Aruba, the other guidebooks i got were all better than this one. Skip it.

I bought this book before going to Aruba. Overall it was pretty good and useful. However most, if not all, the info can be found online. This book is just a way to organize the information a little better. The problem with a book is that even the most current book isn't always the most current information. So for general information about Aruba it's great. However for details about restaurants, shopping, excursions, etc online might be your best bet. If you'd like a supplement to some other research you've done about Aruba this book fits the bill.

If you are planning on going to Aruba, you will get quite a bit of info. However, if you are traveling to Curacao, there isn't much information there and there really could be. There is a lot to do in Curacao and wonderful places to eat. I realize this book is old, but much more info should be provided about Curacao. Thought it was just "ok."

Planning a trip to Aruba? This will help you spark some ideas on hotels, side-trips and excursions, tours, food, and shopping. Once I return from my Holiday trip, I will be able to update this review with more thourough detail.

The next best thing to being there. Half of a vacation is the planning and preparation, and this book was like having a resident answer all our questions. Very thorough, very current, and very relevant. Have fun in Aruba and buy this book before you go. My only negative is it didn't have a large review of the resort I stayed at (Riu Palace). I was able to gather that info elsewhere. Have a blast in Aruba - buy this book.
