B. Smith's breezy anecdotes about her own life and bits of history about the recipes make this a fun book to read. Although I am not from the South, I have an interest in Southern cooking and I am blessed with a friend whose New Orleans born mother-in-law taught her how to make some of the best dishes I've ever had.Very few recipes for Red Beans and Rice can compare to my friend's - which is most certainly not made with canned beans and has the added lagniappe of pulled smoked pork thrown in - including the one in this book. But B Smith's version is very short on cooking time and pretty long on flavor nonetheless. Not all of the recipes are shortcuts, though; the Turducken recipe takes a few days to complete.The book is not without some nice twists to standard recipes here. For instance, the addition of mascarpone cheese elevates simple Cheese Grits to something altogether sublime. And there's a fabulous Cioppino recipe (add a dash of Pernod to each bowl if you really want to hit it out of the park) which is delicious even though I don't really understand what makes it Southern-style.There are some great, fun and classic cocktail recipes in this book, as well as several dishes for holiday meals. I was somewhat disappointed in the quality of the book. The paper is so thin that some of the too numerous black and white photos could be seen through to the other side of the page. But this is a largely enjoyable book with many good recipes, even though it might not be 100% "authentic."

Very unique twist on down home southern dishes. I presented this book as a gift to a family relative who loves to cook. I had the distinct pleasure of eating at her establishment in Manhattan before it closed. The experience of eating such delicious food and conversing with such a gracious and beautiful hostess will never be forgotten. May GOD be with B. Smith in her fight. She's in our hearts and prayers.

Entertaining stories Combined with southern style and the best recipes around. Each recipe is well-explained and tastes great! I really love her interpretation of some of my favorite cuisine!

I have tried four recipes since I bought the book and we enjoyed each one. Very glad I bought the book as I have read that Barbara is ill now, so I will treasure her collection in this book.

Have you ever read a cookbook to your child at bedtime for a bedtime story?Well, I not only use B. Smith's Cookbook in my kitchen, but, i've been known to bring it in my living room, in our bedroom, on the family ride.. and to read to our child at bedtime. Yes.. it's that beautifully, deliciously, warmly written. One can't help but hear the sparkle of Barbara [B.] Smith's voice amongst the pages. It is as if she's like a great sister-friend or neighbor, or fun cousin whom one would have in her kitchen while preparing meals. B is so personable in that her written words lift from the pages to help me be successful in making similar delicious recipes found at her restaurants.. bringing them home to my own family. This is a wonderful book!!! more than a cookbook!..If I want to give a great gift to someone I order B's cookbook, go to B, B, & B get one of her bath or home products, and go to the grocery store to get her EVO and cornbread mix.. talk about an awesome gift to give!. The recipients have been overjoyed.I can't say enough about B. Smith and her books. I pray she continues to write more.

(even alligator!).. and makes exquisite, good looking, great tasting foods as in her many restaurants, accessible and doable for all stages of cooks in their home kitchens.I am proud of Pittsburgh native, B. Smith. I want to read other of her books and to see her soon appear in a local area grocery store to promote her book. I'm bringing my book for her to sign. (Won't be a difficult task. I'm sure the book is great (just like Nebraska volleyball!) but it didn't include the chapter of the 2017 National Championship team which was pictured. I will definitely reorder it when I am assured of getting the additional chapter! GO BIG RED!!!

Great read! What a work ethic Cook has. He knows what type of people he has to surround himself and the team with to build a # 1 program. It’s amazing how you really have to have team chemistry to win a national championship.

I enjoyed reading this book so much! But I’m also a huge John Cook fan as his teams & players don’t have to yell & get all worked up, but play with a quiet confidence that leads to them winning. I think it’s great he was willing to share some of the inside info of Nebraska vball.

Fascinating book. Must read for all volleyball,or sport fans. Lots of interesting inside information. Hard to put this one down so reading it only took two days.

Great book. However this copy was not "very good condition" as the binding of the book was loose and so the top cover would slide up and down while the bottom cover remained stationary. This was my second copy of the book, my previous copy was "good" condition, but was actually much nicer than the "very good condition" version. Disappointing, but the work done to create the book is wonderful.

Covers all the major, famous bridges in wonderful detail.Too bad it appears to be out of print!If you find a reasonably priced copy in good condition it is definitely worth purchasing.

I love this book! It is well written and interesting. The pictures are wonderful.

Had seen this book before and wanted a copy for myself. Excellent and informative.

The condition of the book overall was good. I was a little upset about the torn cover and the fading of pages. I had purchased this book as a gift for a friend who loves bridges. He was pleased and happy so nothing else mattered. This book makes a great coffee table book and it has tons of information. I didn't realize every picture was in grey scale, had some color been added I think it would have been much better.

All of the author's books are well researched accompanied by wonderful photography.

In a nutshell, this book covers a large representation of fascinating and beautiful antique stock and bond certificates that collectors of fine art or other types of graphic art would enjoy. I see the big advantage of collecting such certificates is the ability to frame them, unlike stamps or coins.First the structure of the book. It is divided into three sections: Fine Lithography, Fine Engravings, and Later Date Engravings. On every right-hand side page is a stunning full color depiction of the certificate and on the left-hand page for each certificate is a short description of the certificate (such as date, printer, and vignette) and a brief write-up about the company that issued it.The features I like about the book are that it covers certificates from a wide range of industries, not just mining, or railroad, or automobile related. In addition, the vignettes that appear on the certificates are all different. I appreciate the fact that the names of the banknote or lithography printers are mentioned for each document.I feel this is a great guide for someone who is considering getting in to or is just getting in to the hobby to see the numerous types of antique stock certificates that are available. It is also useful for a seasoned collector who can see items that may not currently be in their collection. Whether you are from the graphic arts world or the financial services world, I highly recommend this book.

About the Author

MUMIA ABU-JAMAL is an award-winning journalist and author of two best-selling books, Live From Death Row and Death Blossoms, which address prison life from a critical and spiritual perspective. In 1981 he was elected president of the Association of Black Journalists (Philadelphia chapter). That same year he was arrested for allegedly killing a white police officer in Philadelphia. He was convicted and sentenced to death in 1982, in a process that has been described as an epic miscarriage of justice. In 2011, after spending more than 28 years on death row, his death sentence was vacated when the Supreme Court allowed to stand the decisions of four federal judges who had earlier declared his death sentence unconstitutional. He is now serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole. In spite of his three-decade-long imprisonment, most of which was spent in solitary confinement on Death Row, Abu-Jamal has relentlessly fought for his freedom and for his profession. From prison he has written seven books and thousands of radio commentaries. He holds a BA from Goddard College and an MA from California State University, Dominguez Hills. His books have sold more than 100,000 copies and have been translated into seven languages.

Mumia Abu-Jamal, a prison (life without parole) intellectual, the author of nine books dealing with the plight of blacks in this country written during his incarceration, makes a strong case that black lives to do not matter to the white power structure. In this book he lists a great many of the atrocities against blacks committed by white police over the last twenty years or so.One cannot read the list without shuddering. Time and time again police resorted to their guns when restraint was called for and all that was needed to deal with the situation. As Abu-Jamal puts it, walking while black is a shooting offense in too many instances to be accounted for by any other measure than racism.Would that black lives did matter. The hope that this country might some day accord people of color the same rights routinely extended to whites seems as far off in 2017 as it did in the days of Jim Crow and White Citizens Councils.End note. One must credit Abu-Jamal for making the most of his life behind bars. His voice will be heard again and again as he presses the fight for blacks and other people of color to be granted justice equal to that afforded whites in this country

Well the title of the book is the question that is being presented to readers and after reading through this collection of short essays, ruminations and meditations all dealing with the results of police brutality or state-sanctioned racist acts, the answer is indisputable, a capital NO. Mumia is clear eyed on these pages and takes no prisoners. "United States history is a study in denial, for much of what is taught as history in the schools of the nation bears little relationship to the lives lived by millions of men, women and children on the land we now call America."Many of the commentaries may ring familiar, Oscar Grant, Trayvon Martin. Michael Brown, Tamir Rice and others. But there are some cases that he speaks of that have flown under the radar. The common denominator throughout is the callousness that these victims and their families have received from their government.The essays are not only contemporary, but Mumia also put the reality of racist violence in history clearly in his scope.Page after page the reading of unnecessary killings certainly makes the book question almost laughable. "It has taken a while to reach this conclusion, but upon reflection, it is inescapable. Why, after over half a century of Black voting, and the election of more Black political leaders than at any time since Reconstruction are the lives, fortunes, prospects, and hopes of Black people so grim?"Mumia closes the book with an extended essay that was originally published as a pamphlet and has been updated for this book release, titled "To Protect And Serve Whom? Given everything the reader will have absorbed prior, this question is highly legitimate. In this concluding essay he talks about the emergence of movements, the opposing of movements, failure of Black politicians and what's next. What will become abundantly clear as one peruses these pages, is just how entrenched the status quo is that allows for such horrific outcomes with police encounters that far too often and with increasingly regularity leave men, women and children dead. As Mumia writes, "When the state permits its servants to take the life of living, breathing, growing, wondrous children, it ceases to have a reason to exist in the world. It has failed utterly." My three children love this book already and can use it to look up words. Great spelling tips at the front of the book make this a reference book they can carry around with them and pull out for homework, letter writing, reports, etc. semi-glossy color pages make this book inviting and friendlier than mom's big clunky dictionary. As a magazine editor, I want my kids to make friends with my big dictionary in time, but this little gem makes it easier to use a dictionary to look up words they don't know how to spell.

Got this for my 8 year old daughter to help her be more independent when writhing. It had helped a lot. I had to show her how to use it a few times, but she eventually became comfortable enough to use it on her own. I also love the spelling "lessons" at the beginning of the book.

We received this about 2 weeks ago and it's already become the most used reference book in the house! Homework time is a struggle, as I'm sure it is at a lot of houses. One of our homework issues is constantly being asked how to spell words above their grade levels. We tell them now sound out the first letter or two and then look in the book. Their spelling has greatly improved and it's given them a chance to learn how to research things without using the internet or Siri. We're extremely happy with this book!

It’s just a book that has words that kids should know how to spell. It’s very helpful for my 9 and 7 year old, some words they don’t know how to spell I make them sound it out and they have to look it up! It’s helping them also with looking up words in their dictionary because the words are listed like they are in the dictionary! If you have kids in elementary then I highly recommend this for them!!!!

I love it - my kids won't even look at it. I would think that a book designed to demystify the weirdness of English spelling and it's whimsical "rules," which are really more guidelines than rules, would be worth a read. Apparently, I am wrong. It sits only having been read by me, who has the spelling thing down and is a bit of a grammar nerd, on the shelf, lonely and collecting dust. Sigh...

You know, becacose cell phones have loust spell check.

This book would have been much more helpful if it didn't have the syllable dots breaking apart each word. It is hard for a child to skim the page and find the word that "looks right" when the word is broken apart by syllables.

I bought this for my 5th grade son. His spelling is not very good and he cannot find words in the dictionary if he doesn't know how to spell them in the first place. This book really helps with that.
