The editor should be ashamed. There were paragraphs repeated word-for-word on the same page, and incorrect words as if auto-correct was running the show.Most disappointing was that the answer key was wrong at least 3 times. This is not acceptable when a student is supposed to rely on this as true and accurate information. I verified with my instructor when I started to second-guess myself, and she confirmed the first answer I questioned was incorrect. After that, I didn't waste her time. I just understood that this book was poorly edited and trusted my answers instead.

Please check the edition. Most courses requires the fifth edition that comes with a one time use code. If you guys are serious on HIT or HIM (medical coding) buy it new

John Slavio may now have me hooked on his books. I was a psychology major in college and have always loved how people think, and have been drawn to many writers in how they view and explain things. I've always loved learning knew things and the way things work.I just read John Slavios's other book called Photoshop for Photographers and was drawn into the way he wrote and explained things, in a way that I truly couldn't stop reading until the end because I became not only fascinated by content, but emerged in the writers way with words.I read John's previous book and this one for one main reason other then realizing I liked his writing style after his first book. I searched out information and came to these books where I found everything that I was looking for.I love reviewing products that I like or sometimes want to warn others about (not necessarily meaning this book, but in general). For example I bought the Ninja coffee bar last yr and loved it because it was so much better then my old, weak, not strong tasting Kurieg and I "NEEDED" to tell others that were also unhappy with the strength of their Kuriegs about just how great this coffee maker was.I bought my Ninja on Amazon so I immediately started writing my review on it on Amazon's site, pausing to take additional photos of the carafe and items that came with it as I progressed in my one page review. I submitted it and looked back at my review recently which had been about a year since I wrote it. I noticed it had received over 200 helpful votes and about 10 people didn't find it helpful or hot tired reading it all lol.This "MADE" me looked at reviews for purchases that I also bought around the same time last yr and not many had been found helpful at all or even viewed perhaps. My analytical mind wheels started spinning full force. I thought was it because of popularity that the coffee pot was liked more, was it due to pricing, the review wording, what made people "SEE" it as helpful more?!THEN it hit me like a ton of bricks, it was the pictures, the closeups and numerous photos combined with my words in the review. My review stood out due to photography. After realizing this I started searching for books that would help me take better photos (Johns last book, photoshop for photographers) and read it amazed by the little things that could be done to enhance my photos.After reading these tricks and tips I wanted to know more about the specifics of photoshop programs and the ins and outs and how to's after finding myself emersed in the the techniques of actual photography itself. That led me to his second book here.This book had taught me tips and tricks on the actual editing (photoshoping) of the photos that I have now been taking in better quality after reading his previous book .In this book not only are there instructions but there are actual photos with arrows showing you exactly what you need to do to from the operations, edits, layering to the actual hot keys (keyboard shortcuts). how to create and edit images, and how to add effects to make your pictures amazing. It teaches you some letting YOU make the edits you want to make to your pictures. It teaches you about lighting and shows you how to adjust and edit it as well as background fading or blurring to make your main subject stand out as the true focal point that it should be in your pictures.Enough about the book, read it for yourself and discover how amazing YOU can make YOUR pictures with the knowledge John Salvio provides you in this book and his other book mentioned above in my review. Great beginner book for Photoshop. It explains what the buttons are, where they are located, and how to use them. Great eBook for the beginner on editing photos. I can't wait to be able to use this book more for editing pictures.

I love this guide is simple and clear and easy to follow. It offered me a refresher and reminded that some of my favorite tools can do more than I use them for too.

This is perfect to get me going on Photoshop. Easy to follow and understand. I plan to reread and bookmark pages to refer to when practicing on Photoshop.

First off, I received a copy of this book at no charge for me to review. I've also read Slavio's previous work on Photoshop called Photoshop for Photographers, and wanted to review this one as well. I found this to be similar in nature to his previous work.I mentioned previously the use of the word 'master' in the title is a bit misleading, as this book is tailored to the beginner. I've seen books that were 500 pages on using photoshop, so a book that's less than 100 pages likely won't make you a master, but can certainly give you a good foundation.Slavio talks about each of Photoshop's tools, many times with screenshots of what that tool does. I would have preferred more screenshots, including before and after, but I was also following along with my installation while testing the tools, so it wasn't as big a deal. If I were just reading the book without being in front of my Photoshop, I might not have liked it.As I mentioned, this likely won't make you an expert, but it's a pretty good place to start.

I am a positive person, so I will be kind. This book will not help you with Photoshop. It is mainly definitions showing you the tools and not how to use Photoshop. I thought the book would show how to make a logo or something. None of that. Definitely not worth $20.

Can you say "spitting in the wind"? That's what it feels like to write a review at this point, when more than 14,000 reviews have yielded an overwhelmingly five-star rating for this book. But I believe in telling it as I see it (which doesn't mean I'm right; this is, after all, only my opinion), so here goes.I put off reading this book for a long time. I generally don't like stories about everyday people who become heroes. They don't offend me; I just don't like reading about them. I felt the same way about "Unbroken," and I should have known better. However, I decided to give it a shot in the hope that this would be the one book of the genre that I adored.Not so much. It's fine, I suppose, but the book struck me as way too long and way too involved in the intricacies of rowing and crew. I don't really like reading too much about the details of sports that I really love (i.e., tennis); I'd much rather just watch the game and enjoy it. So learning all about the ideal traits for a coxswain or the "stroke" just didn't appeal to me.That's point one. Point two is that the book took itself so seriously. I'm not suggesting that the subject should have been given a comedic treatment, but there's not an ounce of even a lighter side. Surely in the years that the Husky crew achieved its miracles there were some fun times? If Mr. Brown is to be believed, there wasn't even a moment of levity. If Joe Rantz was the great person that Mr. Brown says he is (though I don't doubt that he was), surely there were times when he made fun of himself or even laughed, but you'd never know it from this book; it was all hard work and seriousness.Point three is that the vast publicity for the book makes much of the fact that the Husky crew beat Germany at the 1936 Olympics, held in Berlin and filmed by the notorious Leni Riefenstahl. However, the discussions of Riefenstahl and Nazi Germany as a whole are perfunctory and serve as little more than a flat background for the much more interesting (not) subject of rowing. I feel as though I've been misled.The book is not a horrible book, but points one and two make it rather tedious and difficult to get through, and point three makes it disappointing.

Fantastic book about a very fascinating topic. Not only it is a look into what people were going through during the Depression, it shows the different way that training was viewed back in that day. My current position has me working with a number of college athletes, so I recognize the amount of time and effort today's athletes put into their training and playing on top of the academic requirements placed on them. Back in the day, it was at a whole different level. These coaches were all about working and then working harder and doing it again. There are a number training regiments which have come down through the decades, but a coach that kept his rowers out on the water in the middle of a driving sleet storm would probably get in trouble now days. This is on top of spending summers hanging on the side of a cliff to work at dam building. Again, these guys are just at a whole different level. Great read, great topic.

The prospect of reading a nonfiction book, particularly one based on history, appeals to me about as much as, say, taking the SAT again. Given the choice, I'll pick fiction every time. In addition, I have little interest in reading about sports or rowing. But reader recommendations and critics' reviews carry great weight with me, and "The Boys in the Boat" has some of the highest ratings I've ever seen, so I took a deep breath, and decided to read this book that I had originally intended as a gift. And wow, am I glad I did! This is one of the best books I've ever read.Daniel James Brown has beautifully crafted a nonfiction book with all the elements that make a great novel: gripping plot, unforgettable characters, dramatic conflict, and heart-pounding suspense. Injecting suspense into a story where the outcome is known is quite a trick, but Brown accomplishes it superlatively.We meet the nine boys as college freshmen at the University of Washington in 1933. In the middle of the Great Depression, most of them are valiantly trying to stay afloat financially in order to stay in school. None had ever rowed anything larger than a rowboat; the main incentive in trying out for crew was the possibility of a part-time campus job if they made the team - no athletic scholarships here. The story follows one boy in particular, Joe Rantz, whose childhood deprivations rival those of Oliver Twist and who had to resort to some enterprising artful dodging of his own just to stay alive. The nine boys, their brilliant but frustrated coach Al Ulbrickson, and their team guru, renowned boat builder George Pocock, overcome obstacle after obstacle in their quest to represent the U.S. and win gold in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. As the best storytellers do, the author kept me continually on the edge of my seat; just as soon as one incredibly hard challenge- miserable training weather, economic hardships, wily opponents, devious Nazis - is surmounted, another even more daunting one is thrown in their path.Seamlessly juxtaposed with the crew cliffhanger is the story of Hitler's engineering of the 1936 Olympics as a showcase for Nazi Germany, removing all traces of anti-Semitism and presenting Berlin as squeaky-clean and as wholesome as Disneyland.Many light moments are interspersed with the strife and drama. My favorite is an incredible adventure the boys had when they took the coach's launch out onto the Hudson River on an evening before the national championship Poughkeepsie Regatta. I won't spoil it for you here, but what happened to them then could never happen now; it's one of the many unforgettable anecdotes in this book.In fact, many of the elements in this story are incredible. If this had been a work of fiction, I might have found fault with the author for exaggerating at times in order to emphasize a plot point. But in fact, Daniel James Brown did meticulous and exhaustive research, and the events portrayed here are no author's fabrication - it all really happened! Brown's skill in relating this true story to make it seem as if you're reading an enthralling novel, is what elevates "The Boys in the Boat" to the extraordinary level. Don't miss this remarkable, inspiring book!

Each year, our high school assigns a book that all students are required to read over the summer and then they have an assignment related to the book upon returning to school. This was the book chosen last year and I heard good things about it from my daughter and nieces and nephews so I thought I would give it a go.I must say that it started out a bit slowly as a lot of the foundation was being laid and it didn't pull me in immediately like some books do but I stuck with it and I was glad that I did. By the time I was about a third of the way through, I was totally sucked in. It is a book that really has something for everyone -- compelling history (Nazi Germany, 1936 Olympics, the Depression era), athletic training and competition (who knew that the sport of rowing could be so fascinating), and compelling stories of individuals that overcame insurmountable odds. I was truly disappointed to see this book end.

I picked this up for my son, it's an old favorite in my family and our copy was very beat up over the years. When I read it to him I was confused because it seemed short and to be missing pages. Turns out, they just removed all the dialogue between Fox and Knox ("is your tongue too numb to say it?", For example).Otherwise it's a cute and sturdy book, just not the full book as I expected.

One of my son's favorite Dr. Seuss books. Lots of fun to read, and lots of fun to watch the toddler giggle as the adult mangles his tongue the tongue-twisters.Posting a review to note: the board book version (which someone gifted to us) is heavily abridged, and not nearly as fun as the full thing. Happened to see it in the pediatrician's office during a check-up, and was surprised to find a longer (and better!) version. Went and bought the hardcover version from Amazon, and it is the whole thing. Get the original, not the abridged version. So much better.

Board book version is EXTREMELY abridged; around 2/3 of the pages have been removed.

This book was one of my favorites growing up. It's the best when you can convince someone else to attempt reading it to you :DI have been buying copies for baby showers and birthdays for my friends' children in the hopes that I can make their (my friends') lives more annoying (and wonderful).

We LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Dr. Seuss Bright & Early Board Books. We have quite a few that we've collected for my 3-year-old, but we bought this one for my 1-year-old's birthday. He enjoys the book. However, reading it to my 3-year-old is the best. He looks up at me like, "What are you saying, Mom?!" It makes him laugh. It's definitely a new favorite in our home.

My wife loves this book a must have if you love Dr. Suess. We bought this for our kids. They love to read Fox in Socks. Dr. Suess is a poetic genius. One of those books we will save and have for our grandkids some day!!;)

Husband and I are not a fan. Son (two year old) LOVES it, often asks to have it read. What are you gonna do, you know?

Love this book! I run the Tales for Tots program at work and the copy I had was my own from back when I was a kid (so, about 30 years old) and rather small. So when I decided to read this for story time I decided to a new copy. SO glad I did! The pictures were much bigger and easier for the group to see. I knew I would mess up reading this crazy tongue twister (and that's part of the fun, right?) so we made it a game that when I messed up the kids got to "buzz" me like in a game show (saying"MEEEEH!") and I had to restart the page. It took longer but they loved it and giggled their heads off. SUCCESS.

Since the publisher called this "material taken from Spillover" (Spillover is here: Spillover: Animal Infections and the Next Human Pandemic) I wanted to compare it to that wonderful book. In particular, if it was just a way to capitalize on Ebola news and fears, with little more than Spillover reprinting, it would be better for the reader to just GET Spillover!First, Spillover has over 100 pages on Ebola, including the 13 Gorillas primary chapter (vs. 12 Monkeys?) beginning on page 53. In fact, though, Ebola is peppered throughout all of Spillover in fine fashion, and given the little progress that has been made in the last few years (fruit bats, reservoir, etc.) one would assume that this new book doesn't have much new.Well, one would be wrong, as I was. While chipping away at my PhD in Molecular Biology and supercomputing, I worked on the weaponization, epidemiology and response aspects of Ebola (as you might know, Reston had an airborne component, though not humanly virulent in the sense of Zaire/Congo strains) and am still a contributor to Weapbola dot com, although my primary field is now robotics.Both technically and "story wise" this new book is well worth the investment, even if you have read Spillover. Quammen is one of the best Science writers still publishing today, and his books, blogs and articles are always page turners, with deep science woven flawlessly into the narrative. The book is current and up to date as recently as a couple months ago at this writing. Despite the wonderful detail in Spillover, and even with the lack of progress in Ebola research in the last few years, the "perfect storm" potential of groups like ISIS and the relatively robust Ebola lifecyle make this a topic well worth revisiting with the most up to date information, and although there are many new journal articles and even a couple new books coming out, Quammen has already proven himself to be a five star writer, and this is no exception.If you haven't yet read Spillover, should you read it instead, or both, if you're interested in this topic? IMO that depends on how deep your general interest is, because Spillover goes into detail on much more than just Ebola, but this new book does have more detail on the Filos. This brief book is a product of sections of his 2012 book Spillover and recent events. Accomplished author and science journalist, David Quammen takes the reader on a journey through the jungles of Africa in search of the reservoir host. This exciting 128-page is broken out into 21 chapters.Positives:1. Solid science writing. Well researched and engaging.2. The hot-button topic of the day.3. Quammen has a good grasp of the topic and writes with skill. It feels more like an action book than a standard-of-the-mill popular science book.4. Like a good philosopher Quammen asks the right questions and its science's quest to get the answers.5. A partial view of the history and science of Ebola. It's very accessible and focuses more on the quest to find the host.6. Introduces and explains terms in an accessible manner. "A reservoir host is a species that carries the pathogen, harbors it chronically, while suffering little or no illness."7. Does a great job of capturing the difficulties associated with tracking down the sources of viruses and in particular the Ebola virus. "Zoonotic pathogens can hide. That's what makes them so interesting, so complicated, and so problematic." Ebola is a zoonosis.8. Provides many examples of other viruses that shed light on the Ebola virus. "Johnson had helped solve the Machupo crisis by his attention to the ecological dimension--that is, where did the virus live when it wasn't killing Bolivian villagers? The reservoir question had been tractable, in that case, and the answer had quickly been found: A native mouse was carrying Machupo into human households and granaries."9. Provides fascinating facts such as the fatality rates for various infections. Find out the total number of fatalities from the discovery of the first ebolavirus in 1976 through the end of 2012.10. Explains the different strains of ebolaviruses. Lacked insight on the government institutions responsible to handle these epidemics.4. Don't purchase this book if you already own Spillover. It's basically the same book with some minor updates. This book's impetus was to take advantage of the high interest of this subject.In summary, a very good brief book on the Ebola virus. If you are looking for an accessible book that reads more like an adventure than a standard pop-science book you have found your match. It's interesting, engaging and provides some interesting insights on what it takes to track down a reservoir host. Perhaps a bit rushed to take advantage of the interest of the topic and lacking visual supplements but a worthwhile read. A "must read" book for any layman wanting a contemporary chronicle of this frightening phenomenon. A deeply disturbing work in the matter of fact manner in which it summarizes both how much we know about the history of the spread of Ebola, the current state of our understanding about how it functions, and especially how much more we still need to learn especially about how it is spread. The author has a past record of taking complex scientific issues, and translating them for the non-scientist. In this book, he uses experiences of people who are exposed to the disease and its effects as victims and researchers along with accessible scientific concepts . Unlike some other recent attempts, the book does not dwell on the symptoms of Ebola for hysterical effect to promote sales, but on the perhaps more sobering analyses of these symptoms in the context of the different strains of the illness, and the high probability for mutation. There is a cautious reassurance of the hopes in fighting this disease, coupled with a broader explanation of why this is not the last of what may be more, and, more frequent, outbreaks of such diseases in the future.
