Rob Proctor is an author, photographer, lecturer, garden designer, and, above all, a passionate gardener. For eight years, he collaborated with Lauren Springer on an award-winning gardening column for The Denver Post. Together they designed the Perennial Walk at Denver Botanic Gardens. Rob is the author of ten books, including Naturalizing Bulbs and Herbs in the Garden: The Art of Intermingling. He is also a published garden photographer, and has taught garden illustration and is Director of Horticulture at Denver Botanic Gardens. Rob wrote the introduction to Xeriscape Plant Guide.

This is one of my favorite resources for adding plants to my garden in Albuquerque. While I have other plant guides that are better simply because they are more specific to my region, none match this one for beauty. This book is clearly a labor of love from a group of people who are hoping to advance xeric gardening in the Denver area. The information extends pretty well to planting zones 4-7, especially for dry, high altitude climates.The number of plants listed is a little low compared to other guides that I use, but the coverage of each plant is excellent - one or two full pages of text and pictures. The two-page entries generally include several pictures, including pictures from different seasons. There is also a color drawing of each plant, which makes it easier to see significant details and is helpful with identification. The text is also useful and well organized, but it is the pictures that I spend the most time browsing through.

I found this book useful in selecting (and rejecting) some plants for my garden in Sparks, NV. It is disappointing that the book came off the press with an index that simply does not correspond to the text. The pages references are wrong and the index includes plants that are not in the book at all. I hope the publisher has provided errata for any books of this printing that remain for sale.

If you want a good guide to Xeriscape Gardening this is a great book. The pictures are worth the price of the book alone.

It’s a well written book for the novice such as myself. However, in some cases, the author assumes a certain level of knowledge, at which level I’m not. What keeps me from rating it a 5 is a couple of footnotes defining some terms. Nevertheless, I am learning and enjoying it.

Material is invaluable, the edition not so great but anyway... I imagined fully bright and colourful pages showing graphs and charts with tips, specially by it's price. Looks more like a photocopy set of a rough script. But I repeat the content is what matters.

It's an essential book, but I don't find it specially bright enough in some aspects that Owsinski touches, i.e. the arrangement, he states his personal view and seems to differ from serious books speaking about structure and arrangement. It's good if you start from scratch to get to know basic stuff about type of reverbs, how a compressor/gate works, which are the basic 6 elements of a good mix, or the history of mixing, studios, etc.Specially oriented for the classic mixing engineer. If you are a modern mixing aspirant for styles like electronic music or hip hop you will find it too old dated in techniques. Although, the info shared in this book is basic and important but not essential in my opinion. It's good to start from the bottom if you like that way to do the things, but if you practically want to learn directly the technical stuff, I know much better options to read. Buy this book if you want to know about classic engineer's and a bit of history of all since half of the book are interviews. I would read it again if you ask me, but I know there could be a much better and complete book in the field, cutting some information and adding practical and modern techniques.

A few months ago, I thought mixing was mostly a matter of adjusting volume levels on each instrument or vocal. After recording a couple of my songs, I quickly realized that there's way more to it. I'm slowly learning....the mixes are getting better...and this book has been a huge help.

Fantastic resource, part 2 is AWESOME hearing from the best mixing engineers in history. The real guys who did the Beatles, Stones, Floyd, Elton John, MJ, Steely Dan... the list goes on. Filled with gems. Can't wait to read his book on mastering now!

There are so many authors, blogs, videos etc. on mixing out there. Sometimes the different suggestions you get are confusing or contradictory to each other. I have decided to follow one line of advice from now on, i.e. Bobbby Owsinski, his books and his online courses. Bobby has been an author in this field for many years and to me seems to be the most experienced.

Very well presented. Strait up about mixing the right way.

Full of great information and insider tips in an easy to read and follow format.

Very informative about Bundy's psychological state.The doctor spoke to people who knew Bundy over the phone as part of his evaluation. Bundy had just been convicted of kidnapping in Utah in the Carole DaRonche case, the only known victim to have escaped.At this time, author Ann Rule told the doctor that Bundy would not be capable of a kidnapping or other violent crime.The doctor was not determining Bundy's guilt. The judge wanted to know if Bundy was a violent person prior to sentencing him.The doctor formed the opinion that Bundy had a violent nature and was quite capable of further violence.I found the information from other people who knew Bundy fascinating. They are mentioned in Rule's famous book, The Stranger Beside Me.Rule wrote of an elderly woman that Bundy was friends with while he was in college in Washington state as if the woman considered Bundy a rascal.In the conversation with the psychiatrist, this retired nurse described Bundy as scheming, secretive and frightening.Rule mentioned a river rafting trip during which Bundy became mean to his date. One of the men on the trip, a newspaper reporter for 10 years, told the doctor that he was shocked by the mood changes and alteration of personality that Bundy displayed that day.The doctor also spoke to the dream girl "Stephanie," who described Bundy as too wimpy and indecisive.Bundy lived behind a facade of intelligence, politeness and potential. He quickly failed at almost everything he started, failing or dropping out of three universities. Yes, he managed a degree in psychology. He failed at his other attempts at higher education for lack of follow through.We find out about one more Utah murder that Bundy admitted to at the end of his life.This doctor has interviewed other serial killers, and has his own theory about how they become that way and how they feel about their crimes.

This book is a must read for any true crime enthusiast. More so, especially the final third, should be of high interest for law enforcement. The most facinating aspect of this book is that it was written by Dr. Al Carlisle, a man who assessed Bundy for a judge to determine if Bundy was violent so he could hand down the most appropriate sentence. Dr. Carlisle was the first to make the Violent Mind determination and he explains the process simply and eloquently in this fascinating book. This book is a vital piece of the Bundy story.

This is the best book by far that I have read about how a person becomes a serial killer. I've never been interested in gory details of the serial killer but the "WHY". This is only a personal opinion but to me the most important thing from birth is that the child builds an Identity, he knows who he really is. There are many different kinds of serial killers and we've heard the list of killing animals, fires,etc.etc. but what they also have is no identity of their own. Scott Peterson was called the "golden boy" by his parents. He was polite ,helpful, worked hard, loved by everyone, but he was this because he wanted to please his parents. He had no identity of his own. Looking back though we see he had affairs while he dated Laci, while he was married to Laci and after he killed her. There were things in his life that would and did one day happen. He had to kill Laci to get rid of the trigger of fear that was overwhelming him. Only one death but put in the same circumstances again, he would kill again. This book is about Ted Bundy and you can read it, but Bundy and many others had no real identity of their own. They were fake people who killed to feel better. You will see that in some ways each life came about in different ways, but both are or would have been, in Scotts case, serial killers. Very interesting and thought provoking book.

Violent Mind: The 1976 Psychological Assessment of Ted Bundy, is a fascinating look into what it was like to interact with Ted Bundy, after his Utah arrest and incarceration for the kidnapping of Carol DaRonch. During this time, Carlisle got to know Bundy quite well, and it’s clear Bundy grew to trust him. And that trust created an atmosphere where Ted was able to speak freely with the doctor; although there were times when Bundy hedged his answers, not wanting to reveal his true inner-workings, as it were. Carlisle, however, was well aware of what he was attempting, and it was a stark reminder of who and what he was dealing with. The book also has an excellent flow to it (story after story), and I could elaborate on why this is, but I'm not going to. Suffice it to say, that if you’re interested in the diabolical crimes of this most unique American serial killer, this is a must-read book. Indeed, after having written a trilogy of books about the life and murders of this most diabolical serial killer, I found myself captivated with the turning of each page.

I know a great deal about serial killers, the investigative methodology of these crimes, the psychological profiles of the murderers. Further, I know a great deal about Bundy. But this book was a surprise, provided fresh insights and interesting facts and direct quotes from Bundy about his life. I learned a lot of new information and really enjoyed that the book was quite readable. There were a few places where I felt there could have been tighter editing or more polished phrasing, but the authenticity of the material and the cogent handling of the material more than made up for these minor defects. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author. If you're interested in serial killing, the psychology of developing a killer's mind set or in Ted Bundy specifically, this is a must read.

Absolutely the most informative book I've ever read about a serial killer's psychological profile. I love true crime because I always want to know the reasons why. I'd rather read about the reasons why than the actual crimes.Well, I think Mr Carlisle is spot on! I Read it straight through at one sitting.

In “9 Common Lies Christians Believe” Shane speaks biblical truth into a cliche-driven faith. This book is encouraging and uplifting, while also convicting and confronting. He graciously tackles some of the most common unbiblical statements Christians can often be heard saying or found believing. His heart is obviously that his reader might experience a deeper faith in Christ Jesus, instead of settling for the shallow waters of catchy cliches. Want to live from an abundance of uncommon joy? This is one of the most beautifully written books I've ever read, a finely crafted combination of humor, deeply personal accounts and straight Biblical Truth. You will laugh with Shane in parts, and cry in others as God speaks to you personally through his words. I rarely re-read books, but look forward to going back and looking at the many highlighted passages in this book. His writing has helped me "return to the basics of who God is and dive deeply into His Word." You won't be disappointed in this one!

This book brought biblical truths to clichés that are often spoken by well-meaning people. Our words can be a powerful influence on others (and ourselves). Now armed with the appropriate references in God's Word, I confidently will no longer repeat nor believe any of these lies. Also, I love how Shane Pruitt wrote this book as if he is sitting right next to the reader, in down-to-earth terminology. Bravo!

In an age of bumper-sticker sayings that certainly sound Christian, not all are Christian. Shane tackles 9 of the biggest cliches in American culture that have led folks astray and not directed people to Christ but rather, to themselves. This is a timely word that goes back to Scripture to examine these sayings to determine their veracity. Another benefit of this book is that it's very easy to read; there are not $25 dollar "seminary" terms here to wade through. I fully recommend this book to both Christians and non-Christians alike. (So much so that I have multiple copies now to give to friends and family)

I read the entire book while sitting in a hospital waiting while my son got an MRI on his after having a seizure. Reading a book full of the promises of God was so encouraging. All 9 myths are topics and phrases used almost on a daily basis by most people. Shane uses great personal stories and real life application to make this book come alive to the reader. I recommend buying the book and buying a few copies for your closest friends. Everyone needs to read this book!!!

The Scourge by Jennifer A. Nielsen is a fantastic page turner. Much like Jennifer made me fall in love with The False Prince (still one of our most loved series even in 7th), I too fell in love with Ani and Weevil and the trouble they cause. This is an accessible book, many reading confidences will be able to get sucked in and stay sucked in as the action springs from page to page, and yet, it is also a book that speaks of human relationships, of deep commitments to each other. My only disappointment with this book is that it is not a series; I would have loved for the story to keep on going because it is that good.

Used this as a read-aloud for my fourth graders. They LOVED It. They were engaged and looked forward to each chapter. Well written, great characters, lots of surprises....just an all around fantastic book.

This was a very great book. Can't describe how much I loved it! It never kept me bored, always suspenseful. Recommend it strongly. I applaud! A MUST read!😍👏🏻 Also if you do enjoy it recommend "A Night Divided" by the same author.

This was a page turner for my almost nine-year - old daughter. She loved it and is going through it for the third time.

When I first read the synopsis of this book I truly thought I was getting something more along the lines of a gritty tale with mysterious abound. What I received instead was a super light read, with little mystery, and really no surprises at all.The Scourge starts off with Ani, a young girl who seems to always get in trouble, or at the very least trouble seems to follow her like a loving puppy. In her world there is something known as the scourge, which is a fatal disease that anyone can catch, but luckily for her village, no river person has ever caught the dreaded disease. Until one day when she is captured, brought in for testing, and found with the horrible disease. Then her whole life is turned upside down as she is sent to a colony to live on a tiny island for the rest of her short days. But Ani has never been a quitter, and this disease will not get her down. Or for that matter keep her mouth shut. With wardens watching them day and night, and with her own sickness taking over her strength, Ani struggles to find a cure with the help of her friends. But little does anyone realize their true plight, and Ani will not back down until she uncovers the truth, and saves those she loves.The Scourge was a nice, pretty steady book with interesting characters as I did enjoy Ani, her mischievous ways, and her friends. Even the villains were quite villainous. But the plot was completely see through. You already knew exactly what was going to happen before it did, which took the majority of the mystery out of the book. The ending was nice, and overall it was truly just a super light read. I do love children's books and young adult books, but this one seemed just a bit too young for my taste. So if you like a bit of adventure, a definite light read with a happy ending and not really any mystery then this one is for you!

What’s there to say? The book was written by Jennifer Nielsen. Therefore, it was an amazing read. The end.Seriously, I do have more to say. But really, fans of Nielsen will not be disappointed as she provides readers with another exciting adventure full of witty and courageous characters. The concept was unique and kept me turning the pages to figure some things out. I did guess what was happening halfway but did not know why it was happening, which made the read even more intriguing. I appreciated the idea of befriending those we hate or think we “hate" and getting along with them for the greater good. Without giving anything away, the main character Ani struggles with this and readers see her character and others change in that regard. Weevil and Ani are one of my favorite book couples of the year (Is that an official title? If not, it should be in the bookworm world.) As usual, some of the dialogue and narrative made me laugh out loud. All in all, it was a great read and I am looking forward to more of Nielsen's works!

I liked this source book for its insight into a couple of the lost traditions. It also allows GMs to expand their game world to include the Middle East. If you really like Mage the Ascension and get a chance to pick this book up, do so!!!

A nice book, covering a couple of obscure points in MtA: The arabian traditions. Very well researched (if almos difficult to read, too many arabian terms), all the paradigms was very deep developed, but, perhaps just a feeling, a litte "rigid".

Since the early days of Mage, I've wanted to see more on the Ahl-i-Batin. This book gives all that plus more about Mages in the Middle East and even material on the Djinn, spirits unique to the Middle East. The first chapter covers the Ahl-i-Batin, the subtle Arabian magi who seek unity, and opens with perhaps one of the most interesting fictions in any Mage supplement in which a Batini magus decieves one of their ancient foes the Nephandi. It then gives a whole bunch of Arabic words used by the Batini. It then details their origins from the meeting of Akashic refugees of the Himalayan Wars and Ecstatic dervishes of Perisa to the modern times. Major things, such as the rise of Islam (which the Batini supported) to the Technocracy's war on the Batini to their growing influence in modern Iran's Shi'ite government complete with a timeline. It then examines the Batini's power and influence in the Web of Faith (which stretches across the Islamic world) and the five schools of the Batini (kabbalists of the University of Light, alchemists and architects of the Silk Cartel, assassins of the Ikwhan at-Tawhid, sufis of the Darwushim and mentalists of the Paradise Garden). There are plenty of new Rotes, details on Batini magic, foci and philosophy and some interesting signature characters and templates. More importantly it also details the unique aspects of Batini magic (they begin with extra Arcane and can have Arcane ratings above 5, but cannot learn Entropy).The next chapter details the Taftani, extremely vulgar Persian magi who summon djinn, make flying carpets and shoot fireballs. First introduced in the Sorcerer Crusade's Player's Guide, this book fleshes them out by making their beliefs more interesting, drawing upon Zoroastrianism and Middle Eastern paganism. This chapter examines not only the beliefs of the Taftani but also a timeline of their history from ancient kingdoms in Petra and Mesopotamia to their suppression under Islam to their influence amongst Afghani warlords. Along with a map of Persia and Afghanistan, we are treated to areas where the Taftani are strong: Arabia, Turkey, North Africa and so forth. Ironically the same places as the Batini (like the Batini, some accompanied the Moors into Spain, followed Arab immigrants to Detroit or chose to settle in the deserts of Mexico and the southwestern US). Their two factions are examined, the Zaotar who embody vulgar magic in all its forms and the subtle Kahin, who use poetry and divination to work their magics. Theres also details on their magic, beliefs, some signature characters and templates, new rotes, information on Djinn summoning and binding and a few sample spirit minions. Theres also legends of the City of Brass and Irem of the Pillars.The book closes out with a short chapter on the Djinn, their history, their courts (from their Sultans and Caliphs to lowly commoners) and social structure (such as Shayateen, Efrit and so forth) and how to create and use Djinn in games. Basically, they are treated as extremely power spirits. There are also a couple sample Djinn presented.Overall, its a pretty nice book to get, but there are a couple errors and mistakes that keep it from being ideal. For instance, a big point is made of how the Taftani avoid the use of Arabic words in favor of Persian, because of their rejection of Islam, but it then goes on to list the Taftani's major languages as including Gujarati, Armenian, Greek, Avestan, Pahlavi, Sanskrit and... Arabic! Likewise, Ar-Rutbah is mentioned as being a major Batini outpost in Iran, even though it is in Iraq (and in fact theres even a map showing it IN IRAQ!). A couple other examples are in there. But in general its a nice book for information on the Batini, Taftani and Djinn, as well as providing some nice details for a Middle Eastern/Islamic setting for Mage games. Its even better if you use it alongside the information on the Web of Faith in Guide to the Traditions.
