#138,007 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

THIS BOOK IS BEAUTIFUL AND WONDERFUL AND MORE THAN I COULD HAVE EVER HOPED FOR. I just want to wax poetic about this book all day. I didn't think anything could top The Wicker King, but WOAH, WAS I WRONG. The two are very different books when it comes to the tone because the characters are different, but there's still a sense of heartache and the longing for friendship between all the characters that makes these stories so beautifully unique to the author. This book takes place years after the events of The Wicker King, and while it's not a sequel, it could possibly be classified as a companion novel because the setting and characters do overlap in the most marvelous way. The Weight of the Stars takes place in the near future, where space travel to the outer reaches of the universe is a possibility. This is a wonderfully woven tale that's a f/f YA where two girls slowly start to fall in love when they realize they share a love for all things space.Trigger warnings for sexual assault and mentions of suicidal ideation.I just want to cry thinking about this book. And it's been over a month since I've read it. I love it SO MUCH. I love the characters and their story and there's so much thought and feeling placed behind everything that happens in this book, and I AM NOT OKAY.Ryann Bird is a butch girl who lives in a trailer park watching over her younger brother (James), and his baby (Charlie). They lost their parents one fateful day and Ryann did what she had to in order to keep their family together. She took care of James and Charlie, and she would sacrifice everything for them.Alexandria is the new girl in town and when a teacher asks Ryann to look after her, Ryann doesn't say no. Ryann's friends are hesitant at first to let a someone new into their group, but they're a bunch of misfits who have found one another and somehow they all work, and they know that Alexandria will too. Alexandria is a bit of an enigma when we first meet her. She's quiet, but with a low thrumming anger ready to lash out at anyone who gets too close. The development between Ryann and Alexandria is a slow burning one. It's something that needs to grow over time and not something that can be rushed. The pacing of this book is fantastic because it makes you feel like you're living with these characters and going through life one step at a time. It reminds you that high school is hard, but there's more to life than school if you just remember that there's more out there - whether on Earth or in the vastness of space. There's so much to love about this book, but one thing that took me by surprise by the polyam rep. At first, I thought it was just cool that that's something in a YA book, but then the pieces started coming together about WHO these characters actually were. And I DIE thinking about it. How are we so blessed to have my faves getting a life with all the happiness they deserve and THIS IS SOMETHING THAT'S GOING TO BE SOLD IN STORES FOR TEENS?This is such a marvelous thing, and it makes my heart giddy thinking about these three. Ryann's best friend, Ahmed is their son and he is unbelievably precious (as are all the characters in this book) and it both breaks my heart and makes me love him more that he has to be so protective of his parents. He shouldn't have to be the ones to protect his parents from people who want to judge them and their love, but Ahmed has his own way of looking after them.I love Mrs. Marsh. She looks after her students. I didn't think much of her at first, like oh, she's just an adult in a YA book, but I didn't give her enough credit. She knew that Ryann had a knack of taking in people who might not fit in anywhere else, and she knew that Ryann would be good for Alexandria in the long run. I’m also guessing Mrs. Marsh never marked Ryann as absent from her classes either because missing eight weeks seems a bit excessive. But I think all students should have a teacher like Mrs. Marsh who observes and cares so much about her students. She was definitely an unexpected highlight of this book for me and that moment at the end had between Mrs. Marsh and Ryann had me laughing AND crying. The ending is beautiful, even if it is somewhat bittersweet. It's a happy ending for the characters, but I could have read a thousand more pages of the characters doing the most mundane things and would have never wanted their stories to end. I do wonder a little about how Alexandria’s dad handled everything at the end there? We don’t really get any closure with her dad, and I just wonder how he was with everything, because that has to be rough. I cry just thinking about it. I hope he has found his own happiness.I love the characters, I love their friendship, and I love this story with all my heart. It is beautiful and magnificent. There's no sophomore slump here. It's incredible to think that this is only the author's second full-length published novel, and I am here for all the books to come! <3***Thank you to the author for providing an ARC for review***

If you’ve seen my review of The Wicker King by this same author, you already know how much I adore her as both a writer and a human being, so when I was given the opportunity to read and review The Weight of the Stars, I could barely stand myself. She told me this book was a WLW love letter to her queer-lady fans, and I remember thinking, ‘Would it be humanly possible for me to do anything other than love this?’Thankfully, if you hadn’t already guessed, that answer was a big resounding NOPE, because here we are, and I am positively smitten by yet another incredible, poetic, melancholy, queer-as-heck K. Ancrum story. The atmosphere is incredible, the narrative voice stunned me over and over, and the characters are, just as I expected, nothing short of delightful.First and foremost, there’s Ryann Bird, the main character, who I realized within basically half a chapter that I wanted to protect at all costs because how could I not?! She’s this incredible butch girl (which, WOW, can we please see more butch girls in YA?!), she’s tall and strong and powerful, and she seems super rough around the edges but she’s a total puddle of soft, warm goo inside. I could honestly write this entire review and never mention anything besides how much I love Ryann Bird. Also, like, she’s unapologetically kind of violent but only when the situation really deserves it, and I will always live in total support of viciously protective #squadmoms.Of course, there’s also her little found family: James, the younger brother who stopped speaking after a trauma, who has a sweet baby he cherishes and takes such good care of; Ahmed, her best friend, a soft and goofy Sikh teen (whose polyam family made me SCREAM?! more on this in a moment); Shannon, the popular girl who shouldn’t “belong” in their group but somehow perfectly does; Blake, the self-tattooed quiet one; Tomas, the gangly mohawked queer boy who is so cute and reactive and lovely. And, finally, there’s Alexandria, who is so prickly at the beginning that I couldn’t decide if I wanted to slap her or stare at her lovingly (*insert “you’re doing great sweetie” gif here*), because honestly, she has every right to be prickly. Finally, that thing I said I’d come back to? Well, you don’t have to read The Wicker King before this one, but you SHOULD, because a certain very precious and strange and sweet little emo trio shows back up, except a couple of decades have passed and they’re all grown up and married and parenting together and wow, this is the polyam rep my heart has been dying to see. It felt so good to see them all again and I literally screamed into a pillow when I realized we were going to spend time with them on page and just… *wistful sigh* I don’t even know what else to say besides gushing incoherently.Oh, and honestly, the diverse rep in this book? Just wow, K is a queen and I will cherish her forever. Almost everyone in this group is either a person of color or queer or BOTH and it gave me so much life. I love that, while so many other authors are out here still just throwing in a Token Gay™, K’s like, “Nah, let’s just have a Token Cishet™ instead.” What a powerhouse. The closest thing to a “complaint” I had is that there’s a big plot point which I won’t spoil, but it had me glaring at a couple of characters and internally screaming, ‘Why would you do this to me?! To yourselves?! WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS?!’ But, then I remembered that this was a K. Ancrum book, and I knew I was signing up for some variation of heartbreak when I first opened it, and really, it was all good and beautiful enough to be worth the agony, so like I said: does it even count as a complaint? Nope.

From the Inside Flap

The last thing a fourteen-year-old boy expects to find along an old Ozark river bottom is a tree full of monkeys. Jay Berry Lee's grandpa had an explanation, of course--as he did for most things. The monkeys had escaped from a traveling circus, and there was a handsome reward in store for anyone who could catch them. Grandpa said there wasn't any animal that couldn't be caught somehow, and Jay Berry started out believing him . . . But by the end of the "summer of the monkeys," Jay Berry Lee had learned a lot more than he ever bargained for--and not just about monkeys. He learned about faith, and wishes coming true, and knowing what it is you really want. He even learned a little about growing up . . . This novel, set in rural Oklahoma around the turn of the century, is a heart-warming family story--full of rich detail and delightful characters--about a time and place when miracles were really the simplest of things...

I give this book 5 STARSBook in a nutshell: Relationship, Life Lessons, Dreams, and Hard WorkThe same author who wrote "Where the Red Fern Grows" does it again. When you read this book it makes you feel like you are in the Ozark Mountains. I have added this destination to my bucket list after reading this book.Below are some quotes that I feel summarize what this book is all about.RelationshipsWe can learn a lot from one another. The question is will we take the time to do so? Young or old. We can encourage, equip, and challenge one another to help steer us in the right direction. Imagine if our lives were dedicated to equipping and empowering each other?"Grandpa smiled and said, 'We surely do. You know, an old man like me can teach a young boy like you all the good things in life. But it takes a young boy like you to teach an old man like me to appreciate all the good things in life. I guess that’s what life’s all about'.”Working HardSo much now we as a culture just expect things to happen for us. That is the farthest thing from the truth and the scariest thing that we are teaching our kids. Work hard. Don't give up. When things get tough because they will, keep working."I sure do, Papa said, nodding his head. I believe a boy can have anything in life that he wants once he starts working for it. The main thing is not to give up. It makes no difference how tough things get, just bow your back, keep working, and put your heart and soul into it. As you go along your way, live a good clean life, don’t hurt anyone or anything, and always be honest. It doesn’t hurt to pray a little, too."Dreams and WishesI love to dream. I love to make wishes. I love to pray for BIG things. That isn't enough though. We have to help the wish. That is the hardest part but also the best part. It shows and develops your true character."But I do believe that any wish you make can come true if you help the wish. I don’t think that the Lord meant for our lives to be so simple and easy that every time we wanted something, all we had to do was wish for it and we’d get it. I don’t believe that at all. If that were true, there would be a lot of lazy people in this old world. No one would be working. Everyone would be wishing for what they needed or wanted.”This book was a great read. I highly recommend this book for any age. Would be a great book to read as a family.Follow me on Goodreads!

This is a fantastic book for young people. We read it aloud to our children and it was an instant hit. It is a great story of a young boy growing up quite poor in Arkansas, and how he spends his summer trying to raise money to fulfill his dream of having a horse and a rifle. The interaction between the boy, his dog, his sister, and his parents is beautiful. Very highly recommended. Homeschoolers will love this book.

I cannot give enough stars for this book. This book and story are even better than The other well known book by the same author "Where the Red Fern Grows". Well written. Easy to read yet preserves the location of the story in the Ozark hills. Funny. Clean. Written before spirituality was shunned. If there is a boy in your life introduce him to this story ASAP. My fourth grade teacher read this book to our class. It's been my favorite since then. (40 years) I've given it to several others and it's never been a flop. I read it aloud to my family and my husband (who shuns reading) snuck off to the car to read ahead!!! Cannot say enough good about this book.

Fourteen-year-old Jay Berry Lee lives on a farm in the Cherokee Ozarks of northeastern Oklahoma with his father Bob, mother Sara, slightly younger twin sister Daisy who was born with her right leg all twisted up, and blue-tick hound Rowdy. Just three miles down the road live Jay Berry's Grandpa, a storekeeper, and Grandma. Mr. and Mrs. Lee had been sharecroppers in Missouri, but Grandpa traded for some land near his store and gave it to them. Jay Berry's parents and grandparents both are saving up money so that Daisy can have surgery on her leg. Set in the very late 1800s, the book tells the story of one summer in Jay Berry's life when the two things he wanted most were a pony and a .22 rifle. One day while searching for Sally Gooden, their runaway milk cow, Jay Berry finds a bunch of monkeys loose in the river bottom. Learning from Grandpa that the animals had escaped from a circus during a train wreck and that a reward was offered for them, Jay Berry sets out to capture them so he can get the money for his pony and rifle. With advice and help from Grandpa, he tries trapping them, but that fails. Next, he tries using a special butterfly net to catch them, but they attack and chase him home. Then he tries to be friendly, but he finds them at a still and they offer him sour mash that gets him drunk. After that, he and Grandpa try using coconuts and a trap cage, but the monkeys steal all the coconuts when they stop to get a drink at a spring. How can Jay Berry capture the monkeys? Will he ever get his pony and .22? Or is there something more important? Author Wilson Rawls, whose most famous book is Where the Red Fern Grows, grew up on a small farm in the Cherokee Ozarks. We had seen a video of the 1998 Walt Disney film version of Summer of the Monkeys starring Wilford Brimley and Corey Sevier, and liked it. The book is certainly a funny and heartwarming story, not really about monkeys but primarily about Jay Berry's realization of what matters most in life. There are some common euphemisms (darn, heck, golly, and doggone it) and one place where Jay Berry heard some "cuss words" from men at his Grandpa's store, but no actual cuss words are used and Jay Berry says that he never used cuss words. Some might object to the scene where Jay Berry gets drunk, but it is an accident and he gets so sick that he decides never to drink alcohol again! There are references to tobacco use, probably consistent with the setting, but Bible reading and faith in God are an important part of the Lee's family life. And the multi-generational affection is very touching. Jay Berry tells his Grandpa, "Grandpa, we sure have a lot of fun together don't we?" Grandpa replies, "We surely do. You know, an old man like me can teach a young boy like you all the good things in life. But it takes a young boy like you to teach an old man like me to appreciate all the good things of life. I guess that's what life's all about." I found it a truly satisfying book.

I bought this for my 11year old grandson’s birthday. I read it several times before to my classes ( I’m now a retired teacher) and they always loved it, so I know my grandson will enjoy reading it too.

Fabulous book by the late Wilson Rawls! My students, over the years, just loved this book and often would choose to stay inside the room and bypass recess! I can still hear some of them laughing!

This excellent value activity book has a great range of things to do for children of all ages (and those of us who like doing these kind of activities to give our brains a rest sometimes!), from dot-to-dots and colouring pages to spot the difference and drawing tutorials and more. I'd definitely recommend it for anyone who has children to entertain over Easter, and the fact you can print as many pages as you like, in any size you like, makes it especially good in my eyes.NB I received a complimentary copy of this book, but I always give an HONEST review based wholly on my own opinions

This was a fascinating book which provided a great deal of insight into not only Rosemary Kennedy's story, but the story of mental retardation and how society dealt with it at the time. It's amazing to see how much shame having a child like Rosemary brought to a family, and even more amazing is how little resources were available at the time to help manage children like her. Perhaps the most eye-opening thing I learned from this book was the depth of how the Kennedy family pushed the disability movement forward because of Rosemary. This may be something that others knew, but it was news to me and it gives me a different opinion of the family. I was especially moved by how much Eunice Kennedy Shriver did to forward the cause, including her work with the Special Olympics. At the risk of repeating myself, I was also fascinated by the fact that no one is able to see the actual records of Rosemary's lobotomy. There is a notation in the book that the records are sealed indefinitely for privacy reasons, but I think it could be very instructive if we could learn just what went on with the surgery so we could learn from it. One thing I would say that this shows us is that we need to be careful before allowing medical procedures and other treatments to become mainstream prior to effective testing and an appreciation for the potential deleterious effects they may have. It may have seemed that a lobotomy for someone like Rosemary was the right thing to do at the time, but if more time had passed, it would have become more apparent that this type of procedure was ineffective, if not barbaric. This book is a quick read which is very interesting. I would highly recommend it.

Rosemary's story is truly heartbreaking; at many turns her sad fate could have been prevented, but because of the way things were at the time the people in her life didn't know any better. The circumstances of her birth shocked me; I had never ever heard of that practice before and I actually had to put the book down and digest that for a few hours before I picked it up again. Once I got past that initial shock, I could not put the book down. It is so well researched and well written. Not only does it tell Rosemary's story, but has so much information about the early 1900's that I found absolutely fascinating; special education of the time, women's role in society, politics, psychology of the time...the author was so knowledgeable and writes so well that it draws you in and reads like fast paced fiction. She uses personal letters and diaries from Kennedy family members and friends to really give the reader an insight into why things happened the way that they did. It really makes you think about decisions, who in our lives we let influence our decisions, and how those decisions affect our children and our children's children. I absolutely loved this book and will certainly be looking for other things by this author.

The opening chapters of this book will give you nightmares regarding childbirth at the beginning of the last century. And it is hard to put myself in the shoes of the Kennedy parents when I have grown up in this era. It's hard to grasp, through a modern lens, how little was understood about Rosemary's problems. Even so, Joe and Rose Kennedy come off as more concerned with the perception, by the world, of the Kennedy reputation than in Rosemary herself. She is constantly forced beyond her capabilities, or managed in ways to minimize others' abilities to understand how challenged she really was. The expectation is that she will be "cured" by some new therapy, or suddenly catch up academically, as she is moved from one facility to the next and endures a series of doctors. That alone speaks to the perception that she is unacceptable as she is. Here is where it is, on the surface, evident that Rose in particular spent a great deal of energy trying to help Rosemary, but you come away with the feeling it is not out of undying love for her daughter, but more that she is desperate to get Rosemary fixed, to not have to deal with a different child. They live in a world where having an unusual child could pose problems for the remaining children as far as finding suitable mates -- the bloodline is seen to be tainted. Brain damage and Rosemary's inability to keep up with her siblings is heartbreaking. The results of the ignorance of the time as to how all this happened, and how to deal with it, is difficult to read without feeling judgmental by today's standards. The Kennedy siblings seem far more accepting of their sister than her parents. Kate Larson implies that the paths of Rosemary's siblings were deeply influenced by the experience of having a challenged sister.

This is one of my favorite resources for adding plants to my garden in Albuquerque. While I have other plant guides that are better simply because they are more specific to my region, none match this one for beauty. This book is clearly a labor of love from a group of people who are hoping to advance xeric gardening in the Denver area. The information extends pretty well to planting zones 4-7, especially for dry, high altitude climates. The number of plants listed is a little low compared to other guides that I use, but the coverage of each plant is excellent - one or two full pages of text and pictures. The two-page entries generally include several pictures, including pictures from different seasons. There is also a color drawing of each plant, which makes it easier to see significant details and is helpful with identification. The text is also useful and well organized, but it is the pictures that I spend the most time browsing through.

I found this book useful in selecting (and rejecting) some plants for my garden in Sparks, NV. It is disappointing that the book came off the press with an index that simply does not correspond to the text. The pages references are wrong and the index includes plants that are not in the book at all. I hope the publisher has provided errata for any books of this printing that remain for sale.

If you want a good guide to Xeriscape Gardening this is a great book. The pictures are worth the price of the book alone.

Had been looking for this companion book for several years;

Nice book, just what I needed.

Very complete description of these 100 plants. Should be very helpful in plant selection.

Wife has used this book to xeriscape our front yard.

Very informative
