I'm a big fan of Peter Jackson, and I've probably watched the behind the scenes appendices of the LOTR, The Hobbit and King Kong more often that I've watched the actual movies. It's made me wish I were a lot younger so I could go to New Zealand and try and get a job in the movies down there. Given that, it was nice to see that I could still learn some new things from this book. However, I found the tone of the writing annoying. The author obviously thinks Peter Jackson is a genius, which is fine, but often this book comes across as a hagiography. Everything is filtered through this lens of PJ unable to do wrong, every idea, every contribution made by others, every single conceivable positive development is traced back to PJ being unerring and a complete monumental visionary. Even mistakes are twisted to be part of some greater overall genius plan. There is also a curious part involving the Hobbit where Jackson states that it was his idea to make it into three movies, but only recently it was also reported that he did NOT want to make three, but was pressured by the studio, leaving him with no time to adequately prepare for them leading to a lot of problems. That's all pretty much glossed over in this book. The author also injects himself far too often. He was apparently invited down the NZ several times during the production. This is fine, but I feel the book would be better served if it weren't done in such a biased manner. I would use the J.W. Rinzler "Making of Star Wars" books as an example of something like this but done much better. Using photos and materials from Lucasfilm's archives instead of photos of the author trying on props. A decent book, not a ton of new info if you've watched the behind the scenes material (something that I think PJ actually does do better than any other filmmaker) but worth a read. Maybe someday someone will put out a more objective telling of these stories.

This is a great book, but he really screwed up Luke Evan's name, and didn't mention Lee Pace or Thranduil at all! I loved all the in-depth stuff about the making of the Lord of the Rings, but he scurries through the making of the Hobbit and he makes it plain he doesn't think much of the second trilogy, which disappoints me.He also screwed up the name of the actor playing Bard - it's "Luke Evans," NOT Lee Evans!

I first read the LOTR books in the seventies and loved them. I personally feel that the movies are actually better than the books, and thus really enjoyed reading this in depth behind the scenes account of all that went into those films. They remain my favorites and I encourage anyone interested to go to New Zealand as I did, and experience that wonderful country for yourselves (I didn't go to hobbiton, etc, while there, just enjoyed the people and the scenery).If you really loved the films (and I rank them amongst the best films ever made), you will thoroughly enjoy this book, (which delves into everything from it's difficult beginnings, choosing the characters and locations, etc. )

I loved this book. The author does a fantastic job of taking you through the process of creating these monumental movies right along with Jackson and the crew. Highly recommended.

First third to nearly halfway of this book gives in depth detail that, though informative, could have been slimmed down considerably. It does give a lot of interesting detail regarding the actors, their individual efforts in achieving their performances, and also affirms the amazing talents of Peter Jackson.

If you love The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, you will thoroughly enjoy this book. However, I was amazed at the number of incomplete sentences and other grammatical errors in the book and that is why I gave it four stars instead of five. I would not expect a long-established publishing house like HarperCollins to do such a poor job of editing.

Tolkien fan - I was surprised to find this book has as many pages as my LOTR book. I'm not too far into it yet but I'm enjoying reading it.

Well, I was looking for a different author to take a break from what I have been reading (Janette Oke's writings). I read a comment by someone on a later book concerning the same family and their fondness of the characters. I had to look into the older books and start at the beginning. I am so glad I did! Very well written and intense story of a Norwegian family that begins to leave Norway in search of the promises of "Amerika". Their plans took a while and many doubts crossed their hearts and minds as they crossed the ocean in very difficult quarters. Their first look at "Amerika" was tarnished by things that happened as soon as they disembark. They wondered at the "gold on every street" when they saw and smelled the sewer along every street instead. This book tells the story of their travel to the West, to the land of the Dakotas. There are two brothers with their wives and two children making the journey, one of which was born in route to America. What a lot of drive is in the characters of this story. The more I read about them, the more they felt so real and the more I realized how little I really know about coming to America.

WARNING!!! This book and all the other 17 books are about the Bjorklund family are wonderful. The author is a fantastic writer. Her stories want you to keep on reading. The family she writes about has tears and laughter and you experience those tears and laughter. Lauraine Snelling has a God given talent and I thank her for sharing it. But, be prepared to buy the next book and the next and the next. You got the first book free in the first, third and fourth series. If you want to read every book about the Bjorklund family be prepared to pay $105.63. I think that is outrageous. These books are not stand alone books. You must buy the next book to find out what happens. I call that a "cheap trick" but an expensive one for the reader.

Uff da! It was good! Of course, it was an image of my mor and grandparents settling in the Dakotas in the 1880's. Ja, I heard the stories just like in the book, but from the lips of my mor. Sure, the rope, or wire in my mor's case, that stretched from the house to the barn so that one would not lose their way to and fro in a snow storm, the soddy, the heartbreak of losing two young ones when disease came through, the Christmas goose, the lefse, and so forth. I could identify. Some traditions die hard; I still cook a goose at Christmas and have for many years.The writing is good; the struggles and victories are accurate, and the characters were real enough to be believable. They were like some of my hard-headed Norwegian relatives--good people yet sinners with faults of their own, but God is present. There is mix of humor and drama and love interest. Metis is the only fabrication, or I should say, the only unrealistic character in my mind. The Sioux where my forebears settled were different.So, if you like a good book, have some Scandinavian or upper midwest background, or just appreciate history and reading about life at the end of the 19th century, then read this book. I am looking forward to picking up the others in the series and following Ingeborg into the next generation. Mange takk, Ms. Snelling, for a fine read.

Though the end is satisfying, Snelling leaves enough plot bits unresolved to make us want to find out what happens in the books that follow.An Untamed Land is a strong beginning to what has proven to be a popular series of six Red River of the North books. This is an odd manual since it includes 2 major revisions of the Santa Fe. Pre and Post 2007. All Santa Fes till 2006 were a set, and 2007 through 2012 is a set. So they try to cover alot of ground in one issue or otherwise I would give it a 5 star. Also, around 2005 it seemed to many these books might bite the dust. Of course they never will, since nothing is more mobile and convenient as a book for jotting notes in and using under any condition, rain or shine, power or no power, smart or not so smart. A manual is one of the constants. This one is the 4th best manual for this car at any price.The best is the hard copy of the 200X manual for your specific car sold to dealerships. They run several hundred dollars. The second best is the online manual available to dealerships, Those run several thousand, but cover all the cars for the brand. The third best is hyundai's customer repair site that has a watered down version of their shop manuals. And 4th is the Haynes, certainly the best value by far for the money. Chilton's sold its automotive manual line to Haynes, along with a 10 year exclusive on the use of the name Chiltons. Haynes phased the brand into their own till around 2007 the brand became nearly nowhere to be seen. In or about the late 2009 or so a couple of years before Haynes license was about to expire on the name Chiltons, a company called Cengage started to make plans to start to publish again after the license expired in 2011 or 2012. So now you might see Chiltons again appearing on the market, but they are not the same company as the old one by any stretch.So you can see how this manual was published about at the middle of the transition of these two companies merging and this must explain why they undertook writing one manual to cover two series of Santa Fes'. The future must of seemed uncertain for some of the writers and contracters at the time.

Cheap! Except for the cover, this book is black and white and printed on newsprint-grade paper.Even though they state this manual covers 2001-2009 model years, if you have a CM generation (2007-up), there is very little information. The photos and illustration are all for the older and 2WD models. Very little on AWD.This manual is a complete waste of money. The HMA Service website is a much better resource and is free.Correction 12/22/13: the HMA service website is no longer free. As of 12/20/13 it is a paid service. The Haynes manual still sucks though.

This manual is okay for basics, but lacks detail where there were major changes between the 2006 and 2007 models. For instance, it doesn't note that there was no inertia switch/fuel cutoff after the 2006 model year. That proved to be an important detail when trying to diagnose a fuel pump failure.

This small book is true to the spirit of St. Benedict and ll he hoped for the spirituality of those monks that followed his Rule.

It brings the rule of St Benedict into modern life, and it helps to reinterpret the rule for use today. It is meant for eveyone interested in living out the spiritual life, not just monastics. It is fairly short and very easy to read.

This book makes me want to know even more about the Benedictine rule.

While the spirituality of St. Benedict does not really resonate with me, I appreicated reading it to learn and understand more about the history of spirituality over the centuries. It is important to see the evolution of even spirituality to more fully appreciate what brought us to where we are today.

Am still reading it. Finding his treatment of often difficult Benedictine topics to be clear and easier to grasp and put into practice than other similar works I have read. It's working for me.

Like nearly everyone else I've known who has been raised as an Evangelical Christian in America, for most of my life I've known almost nothing about St. Benedict, and many of us may feel like there's not much reason to invest any of our highly valued time in changing that. Thanks to Spirituality for Everyday Living by Brian C. Taylor, both aspects of that can change.Much of our unfamiliarity with Benedict is due to the fact that he wrote his Rule for 6th century monks, and I have yet to go to church with many people whose lives resemble those of 6th century monks in any significant ways. So it's very helpful to have the ancient Rule of St. Benedict interpreted and adapted for us by Taylor, an Episcopal priest of our own day. He does a good job of showing how Benedict's guidance, which has proven reliable to so many for so long, can be followed by people who desire to arrange their lives around a dedicated pursuit of God yet who live in the context of family and work responsibilities.Taylor does a remarkably effective job of communicating this in only 70 pages (including the Preface, Introduction, and Appendix!). The three short chapters of the book are arranged around different characteristics of the monastic life prescribed by Benedict: Chapter 1 describes the monk's "commitment to life": stability, conversatio (repentance), and obedience; Chapter 2 is the monk's "life in balance": prayer, study and work; Chapter 3 is the monk's "self in relationship": with God, others, and things.Each chapter contains Taylor's summary and interpretation of the applicable sections of Benedict's Rule, as well as his own personal examples and suggestions on how people today can apply Benedict's guidance in life outside of the monastery.I believe that one of the greatest need for Christians today is to have teachers who are effective at reconnecting us with the riches of the voices and guidance available to us from the past. St. Benedict is someone whom we will benefit from knowing and having as a teacher, and Taylor's book is a valuable resource for introducing him to today's Christians.

I just finished this book last night, and I found it to be very inspiring, and insightful. The author is an episcopalian priest, married with family. He really brings an interesting insight to the Rule of Benedict coming from someone who is a pastor by profession and a parent. I found the book to be a concise quick read, and the page layout was just fine. For Oblates or those wishing to become Oblates add this book to your reading list. The author being someone who is married with children lays out simple ways for the laity to incorporate the Rule of Benedict in everyday life. I am Catholic and I did appreciate the neutrality of this book. I believe this book serves well as an excellent read for Benedictines of the Catholic or Anglican tradition.Pax.
