This is definitely a book to get if you want to learn SQLi from the ground up. Many other IT security related books devote a chapter to SQLi that feels rushed or doesn't fully explain the "in/out's" of SQLi. This books starts with the premise that the reader is completely new to the concept of SQLi. The author easily explains the concept, how to detect it, and how to prevent it in a way that is easy to understand. If you ever heard of the "Crawl, Walk, Run" approach, this book beautifully illustrates it. What I love best is that it gives you easy to follow examples without being wordy or verbose. It isn't a book that will melt your brain with boring material, in fact, it is actually quite fun to read and follow along. Like any book that is fun to follow you will have an easier time remembering the material. The book is split into four sections - undestanding SQL injection (Chapter 1), finding SQL injection (Chapters 2 and 3), exploiting SQL injection (Chapters 4-7), and defending against SQL injection (Chapters 8-10).This book will definitely appeal to all audiences interested in the subject from the pro penetration tester, to the novice, IT security student new to the subject, or a database admin that just wants to write more securely.So if you are debating to find a book about SQLi, look no further and pick this book up.

Before I purchased this book, I thought I was pretty damn 1337 with the sequel. How wrong I was!This book is awesome! Any security researcher, web developer, pen tester, or student should read this! Anybody interested in databases should read this! It has tons of code examples in it - MySQL, Oracle SQL, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Java, C#, and PHP!This book covers all sorts of SQL injections. It covers everything from finding the SQL injection to exploiting the database server. Very well written book and easy to understand. You should have some knowledge of programming, especially knowledge of SQL if you want to read this book. You should know at least one programming language in addition to knowing some basic SQL. Ideally, you will know either PHP, Java, or C#. This is not an intro to sql or intro to programming book. This is not a book on hacking or penetration testing. This is a book on SQL injections and it covers just about anything you can imagine.SQL injections in stored procedures? Yep. SQL injections to gather more information about the database schema? Yep. SQL injections aimed at accessing the server? Yep!As I've said, and I repeat, THIS BOOK IS AWESOME! If you've got any interest at all in hacking web applications, you need to master SQL and SQL injections!

I learned a lot about SQL, not enough to make a career out of it but enough to understand the attacks, why they work, and how to prevent them.This is a great resource for penetration testers, recreational hackers, and security professionals. I highly recommend it.

If you are a creative of any sort, this is a fantastic and fascinating peek into the mind of an artist who is both very imaginative and very organized - not a common combination in the general population. I love Lynda Barry so I was going to read this regardless but I had no great plans for the book other than to enjoy it. Instead, it became a sort of warm-up to my daily journal exercise - a totally unexpected source of inspiration and ideas for my own oftentimes lazy creative process. It was so useful that as painful as it was, I committed to reading it very slowly in order to prolong it's use as a daily class. But that's me. This could easily be read in a few hours and then read again. It's me who made it work but it's not - it funny, and smart, and thought provoking. It's wonderful.

Lynda Barry is a creative genius and a force of nature. The text is 90% hand-lettered. Some seems rather quickly scribbled, so I found parts a bit hard to read. This slowed me down, but perhaps this may have been the author's intent.Barry takes some drawing projects, with attribution, from Ivan Brunetti's text, Cartooning: Philosophy and Practice. Found this interesting as Brunetti insists that the reader proceeds through his lessons precisely as instructed, in the order instructed. Lynda Barry has a far looser take on education, and improvises as she goes along.I teach cartooning classes at a university and relate to Barry's frustration with digital devices in class. The hand, she points out, is the original digital device. She also pleads with her students to document the totality their life experience, not to dwell on the boring bits. I could also relate to that. Too many students do lovely drawings documenting themselves and friends watching and complaining about the banality of TV.There are many things that will prove valuable to teachers here, like her blue pencil project, and Barry's imaginative way of taking roll. Anyone teaching cartooning, writing, or creativity in general, will find this of interest.

I'm only up to page 23 but I really love this. I alter this kind of composition book to make journals for friends and I have my students do so, too. So when I saw the cover of this, I already knew I was going to like it. I love the suggestions about drawing, about creativity, dealing with students' tendency to "like" and "dislike" everything (which is often not only irrelevant but can be distracting, while they are learning). I like the author's attitude and cant' wait to read the rest. I think I may try out some of the ideas as if I were a student in her creative arts class. If you like drawing, creative writing and theater or if you are interested in making your classroom teaching experience more fun for you and for your students, you might really like this book.

Welp, this book influenced my current class before I was even done reading it, so four stars for that alone. This would be five stars, but at times--because of the layout--some of the ideas were a little difficult to follow. Lots of good activities and things to think about here in regards to creativity and writing. I also love that she shares examples of her own work as well as some of her students.Also, I wish I could have taken one of Barry's classes.

Hilarious. Soulful. Practical. Kind.When I opened Syllabus, at first I felt overwhelmed by the density of content on each page. That quickly shifted to amazement at how organized and simple the actual presentation is. Then it shifted again to enormous gratitude for someone who could compile this sort of support within the pages of a book. Such clear instruction. Presented in such a welcoming way. It's really hard to explain. Leave it to say: I have already gifted it to two of my pals and I am methodically moving through her syllabus and feeling lighter and more accepting of my scribbles everyday.

Love this inspirational Art notebook by Lynda Barry. I use it in my college art classes. Students are inspired and appreciate the free-form approach to idea formulation, general thought collection, and sketching (doodling). Love it, love it!(I learned about these notebooks from one of Barry's students.)

Super fun! Sure to give you all sorts of ideas. I bought notecards for the first time in years, and it's been so fun and so useful. I believe I first heard about this book from a newsletter of Poets & Writers, and I am so happy they clued me in on this wonderful and unusual book. Her students are fortunate to have her. But then, she's not grading my work, so I can only judge from afar.

This book has helped me immensely with my creative journaling. Barry's insights about creativity and discovering your process have been invaluable to me. I'd recommend this book to people that are in a creative rut and need to look at their work with fresh eyes. I'm a writer and visual artist, so Barry's advice is dually applicable to what I do.

I was not really familiar with the works of Shostakovich, but having been to Saint Petersburg several times and speaking with people about the siege of Leningrad, I thought the book would provide an interesting read. It more than delivered on this and I found it hard to put down. The photographs contained in this book are truly fantastic and not just a bunch of blurry indistinguishable ones. The story was both fascinating and moving, while at the same time giving me a new level of respect and appreciation for the residents of Leningrad, while showing how despicable the communist leaders truly were. It was also eye opening to learn about how this seventh symphony was played all over the world and universally understood. Even the Nazi soldiers (some of them) when they heard this symphony being played on loud speakers throughout the city understood that they would never be able to win this city, while also understanding that rather than the subhuman Slavs that they had been told lived there by Hitler that only the strongest and most human of humans could produce such music after such a prolonged siege and period of starvation. I had a SPB resident tell me this past summer about her father as a child and his evacuation from Leningrad during the siege. She spoke to me about the dangerous trip across the lake in the middle of winter. To then read about this "Road of Life" within the book in great detail, brought the earlier story I heard into much sharper detail. It was a good book that I hated to see end, although it is not a short one. After reading this book I bought the symphony to listen to and found the whole experience very enlightening after understanding the circumstances that surrounded its birth.

Wow. Seriously. Wow. This is an exquisitely written book, filled with such power and emotion that it moved me to tears on several occasions. The depth of the research and the honesty with which it is presented is impressive, and kudos to the author for this. I'm not really a huge non-fiction person, and I pretty much never read about war, but this one blew me out of the water. I don't give out five star ratings very often, but this one absolutely deserved it. The proof? Not only did I actually go out and buy the book, but I also bought a recording of the complete symphonies of Shostakovitch. I can't stop thinking about this book, even days later. Read it. You won't regret it.

Ostensibly this is a book for younger readers, perhaps for High School Advanced Placement English, Music or History students. This unassuming book however can hold its own in terms of pure scholarship. I am a subscriber to DSCH, and own every book I've been able to get my hands on on the life and music of Dmitri Shostakovitch, beginning with "Testimony", as told by Shostakovitch to Solomon Volkov and and New York Times journalist Harrison E. Salisbury's "The 900 Days:The Siege of Leningrad." A superb story teller, M.T. Anderson has created the most fully integrated book on Shostakovitch life & times thus far. M.T. Anderson is one of my favorite authors ever, young adult or otherwise, serious or silly. His "Feed" changed my entire perspective on our online world — and I was 42 at the time — and his "Jasper Dash and Flame-Pits of Delaware" is still one of the funniest books I've ever read. When I saw that he had written a book about one of my favorite composers ever, I one-clicked that puppy faster than you can blink. I was not disappointed.I knew the general story of Shostakovich's 7th Symphony, of his composing it during the Siege of Leningrad and what a splash it made across the world at the time, but Anderson presents an unbelievably detailed history of Shostakovich's early life in Leninist Soviet Union, Stalin's brutal reign, the war and the siege, and through it all, Shostakovich's composition of his huge 'war' symphony. It's a complete picture of an utterly foreign world to us, and Anderson brings it all round to the importance of art/music and how it keeps us human even in the worst of times. I was very sorry to see the book end.

I am a classical music lover and I thought this book was outstanding. The author provides the background of what is going on in Russia as it impacts on composer, Dmitri Shostakovich. I had no idea of the torments the Russian people went through as things in the country went from imperial rule to that of Lenin and then Stalin. In America, we hear much about the persecution of the Jews by Germany, but not about the thousands of Russians who were starved, sent to labor camps, tortured, shot, etc. The City of Leningrad was under siege for over a year while bombed and blockaded by the Germans. Shostakovich's 7th symphony (the Leningrad) was played all over the world and even by an orchestra of starving musicians within the city. It brought feelings of solidarity and hope to those who heard it.

These gray man books are hard for me to review - I couldn't decide if it's a 1 star or a 4 star so I went with 2. WHY?As far as realistic and possible they are right up there with the Wizard of Oz. But nobody thought the W of O was trying to tell a tale that is physicaly possible on the earth as we know it. The Gray Man, OTOH, seems to operate on OUR world so the physical laws do apply and people and machines have to function as the actually do.Our gray man starts out as the smartest, most capable, assassin the world has ever seen yet he constantly ends up getting bailed out of dumb situations by folks who somehow end up helping him in ways that are totally against the laws of human nature.. OK (spoiler next re the first novel), He's near death, gets an amateur blood transfusion in the car WHILE driving it to what ends up being a major battle and, of course, he emerges triumphant. Ask your local ER doc how well that would work...BUT, for some strange reason I kind of enjoy them and I have ended up reading through the series so far to the current book despite being regularly annoyed, no, make that "angered," by the "NO F Way" bird that is constantly chirping, no, make that "screaming" in the background. I can deal with being lucky occasionally but, as I said in my first gray man review, his luck is like flipping a coin 20 times and having it turn up heads every time. He apparently, can also fly a helicopter by using the controls in a manner in which it would be like trying to use a car's accelerator pedal to turn and the steering wheel to add/reduce throttle. That's not a problem in a novel...unless the folks reading it actually know anything about flying a helicopter. And let's not even talk about ballistics where, it seems, in Kiev, his rifle was zeroed at 325 yards but he had to aim high with the rifle to hit a target at 120 yards. I guess there is some sort of reverse gravity operating in/near Kiev. C'mon Mark, a little research beforehand would be welcome. OTOH, I guess the books are selling well so why bother? ;) And yes, despite my annoyance I'll pay good money to read the rest of the books. For the life of me, I can't figure out why. ;)

Mark Greaney's 4th Gray Man offering, Dead Eye, continues to deliver an engaging as well as fresh plot. Court is still firmly in the sights of the CIA, which has outsourced the job to a private, off the books, well regarded mercenary force. Unbeknownst to everyone, a similar "singleton" like Court who is part of the hunt has decided to go rogue and use Court as a decoy while he executes his master-plan. His strategy however, requires Court stay alive long enough to end up the fall guy. The Israelis, whom everyone wants to avoid, are brought into the mix. Leading that group is a young, capable woman who begins to question the CIA's version of events. In classic Court fashion, he surprises everyone as he runs toward danger, ends up foiling everyone's plans, and still manages to make pick up a few allies along the way.Tradecraft is classic Gray Man, both in the style of avoidance and slipping under the radar as well as weapons and self defense. There are plenty of action scenes with much performed by other participants that highlights the superior skills Gentry possesses. Also, as a special treat for the reader, the details of Kiev are finally revealed as is the supposed basis for the original CIA kill order, although there is clearly more backstory to fill in as well as the actual, true events.

This is the fourth in the Gray Man series of books (five have been published so far) - I am reading them in order at the suggestion of a buddy of mine. It has been very interesting to watch the author, Mark Greaney, evolve as a writer through the four books I have read. He started the series out as pure action on top of action (think 1970's Mack Bolan) and has been changing and improving his writing style with each book. Not that the pure action was bad - it was what it was, but now we have plots that are not linear and the action is more sporadically placed throughout the novel.The characters are starting to be more carefully crafted and the plots now have some more interesting twists.The author continues to do his research on the weapons being used. For example the HK MP7 is an excellent choice of personal weapon for the Townsend operators - a more powerful round than most handguns, firing a smaller caliber round at a higher velocity. A much better choice than the obvious HK MP5 sub-machine gun which fires the 9MM. The author does make one minor error when he describes the Blaser sniper rifle - he calls it the model 93 - when it is actually Blaser's Model LRS2. The 93 is the sport version of the rifle with wood stocks and such - and is not the rifle described, which is the LRS2. His choice of the Leupold Mk2 scope is a good tactical choice. Toward the end, Dead Eye raids a Townsend safe house's weapons cache and takes an Accuracy International sniper rifle in what the author describes as .338 caliber - it is actually the .338 Lap Magnum caliber, and the model of the rifle is the AX. I appreciate the time the author took to try and get the weapons down correctly, as one of my pet peeves is those who do not do so.Also, I should note it is not just the weapons that the author tries to describe correctly - the Ford Van - a Galaxy model - brought me up short - but, after a quick check - yep, it is a Euro only model. (My guess is Ford used the Galaxy term to make sure they used it often enough that no other car company could take the use of the term.) Also, his description of the other accessories of the Townsend operators, from their Oakley sunglasses, to their G-Shock watches certainly sets an image of these knuckle draggers.The books are getting better and better - I am looking forward to starting the fifth - and I agree with my buddy - read them in order

Easy to read, easy to understand, clear diagrams, actual microscopic photos for cells, etc. Covers more than just basic anatomy (ex: explains villi in the intestines) This is one of a series of books (6, I think). My 10-year-old borrowed one from our local library; we were both impressed. I was so glad to find each book on Amazon!
