While those who take "The Cure" can still be killed (via accident, murder, disease, cancer, etc), they will never age - meaning you could theoretically live forever as long as you take of yourself. After a protracted legal and ethical debate, The Cure is legalized. And then all hell breaks loose.The Postmortal is told through the eyes of John Farrell, who gets The Cure at age 29. Told in short, journal-like chapters, newspaper articles, interviews, and social media feeds, the narrative stretches more than 70 years - at which Farrell remains 29.This is one of the most engaging books I've ever read. At nearly every single chapter, author Drew Magary brings up a new wrinkle or subversive idea about what it would mean if people simply stopped aging. What would happen to marriages? The environment? Religion? The prison population? Military service? International politics? Terrorism? Healthcare? Retirement?While The Postmortal covers some bleak territory, Magary maintains a somewhat light touch, ensuring the book never becomes a nihilistic slog. I enjoyed reading this book. Lots of ways of looking at problems that would arise if people were immortal. Actually, they only stopped aging, there are lots of other ways to die and the novel explores many of those. But what would be the social, environmental, and political repercussions of a cure for aging?One problem is that the book's premise for the cure is very, very weak. Also, the explanation for how and why the cure was dispensed was not really explored and that would have been an interesting topic. What happened in the third world countries? Why is there an infinite supply of this stuff?The book gets weaker and weaker as you progress through it. By the time you get to the end, there is no justification for anything. Major developments simply have no explanation.I debated between giving this three or four stars.

The first half of the book made you think about how society would respond if there was no more aging. The second half? It was like reading an unfinished, very long and drawn out description of Suicide Bunnies. Well no, at least Suicide Bunnies has some (morbid) humor to it.On top of that, the book could be 100 pages LESS, and still get a solid point across. About 152 pages into the book I kept wondering where the story was going. Apparently the author didn't have a clue either, since the book ends without any clear ending whatsoever-be prepared to sigh in disgust at the last ten pages, to put the book down with a look of disgust, and be happy you are done reading it.So, I give the book three stars for making me think in the first half, but I could just as easily give it two stars for being scattered, and not able to pull itself together in the middle and end.

i loved "the hike" and liked a lot of this book, but third act was a little forced and kind of went away from what made the book interesting. the author actually writes about how he needed the structure and story or else it was just rambling deep thought, but i thought that was the strongest point of the book.good premise, interesting thinking and presentation, but kind of falls off when it turns into a by the numbers story that forces the ends to be tied up in an unsatisfying and out of character way.

3.5*This book nearly lost me in the first quarter. And frankly, it's not entirely the book's or author's fault. When writing for a general audience, you have to take the time to explain how everything works, which takes time. You're trying to make the world and characters matter just enough that the reader sticks through the rest of the story.This is fine, but when a book about immortality trips on a science fiction / fantasy / comic reader, or a reader who can otherwise follow the leap the main characters are going on without much convincing, that early part can be a real drag. In part because things seem obvious. In part because you have made the leap and are waiting for the part of the story of consequence to start.But I am happy to report that this book was able to shake all of that off once it set everything up and punished the protagonist enough. That's not to say the punishment ended halfway through - it didn't. But a lot of the early grind does get paid off near the end, even if it's a bit of a stretch to go that circular.

This is one of favorite reads of the last few years. Without giving too much away, the "cure" for aging is found. What problems will this create in the long run when people don't die of old age? What if you change your mind? Will "til death do us part" be a bit much to commit to in marriages now? What about the people that opposed it to begin with? Lots of interesting questions and interesting scenarios. It is a great read. It was the kind of book I would stay up way too late reading because I would read "just one more chapter" a few too many times.

Yet I practice from a technically integrated approach, drawing variously from all major orientations depending on the client's personality and Stage of Change (Prochaska, 1984, Systems of Psychotherapy: A Transtheoretical Analysis). While relational theories imply cognitive interventions, I felt I ought to read Beck's Cognitive theory of personality as its the seminal work of the cognitive-guru and I try to practice a well-rounded therapy.I personally thought that Beck's approach to Cognitive Therapy (CT) for personality disorders goes back to his psychodynamic roots, having much similarity to OR theory. However, I think Beck's theory is quite distinct from OR theory. While its easy to compare the therapeutic approach between CT and OR, I think the more interesting discussion is the possible integration of theory.There is a wide belief that all psychological functions perpetuate personality disorder, thus therapy must take an integrated approach, intervening on all those functions at the same time. Beck describes this as a cognitive-interpersonal cycle were beliefs lead to interpersonal behavior that reinforce the beliefs. However, Beck's approach to Axis I disorders would challenge the belief and ask the client to behavior differently in interpersonal interactions to either find evidence of their belief or to develop a new belief / change their schema. This would separate the cognitive/intellectual intervention from the behavior and emotional reaction. In order to intervene on all the psychological functions at once, the interpersonal interaction must occur in therapy. The therapist must explore the therapeutic relationship with the client, the cognitions and emotions that shape the client's interpersonal behavior, and the therapist's reaction. This also must be associated with ongoing interpersonal relationships outside of therapy and past events in the clients life. This is quire similar to a transference analysis and interpretation in OR or other psychodynamic therapy (Davanloo's interpersonal triangle between therapy, current relationships outside therapy and past events; Kernberg's Transference-Focused Therapy). Thus Beck's CT approach to personality bears some resemblance to his psychodynamic roots.However, Beck's theory of personality differs from OR theory. Both theories would conceptualize the cognitive processes and belief systems similarly, as well as the interpersonal patterns. Yet Beck believes schemas are at the pith of personality while OR theory believes there are several split-off ego states. Ego states could include a rational, adaptive ego; regressive ego-states fixated via childhood trauma; & ego-states shaped by interactions with key developmental figures such as parents, as well as society in general. Healthy personality is a gestalt or whole of past experiences, yet even healthy individuals can recognize ambivalence between 'parts of their self.' Their posture will go from slouched or even fetal to authoritarian, their inflection from child-like to parental, their emotional state from regressive to intellectualized, their defense mechanisms from primitive to rationalized, their sense of identity is completely shifted, emotional reactions polarized and labile, resulting in extremes in behavior and unstable relationships. An individual with paranoid personality has a belief that the world and people are malevolent because they have been victimized in the past, thus they enter social interactions in a defensive child-ego state. However, defensive posture is a passive, avoidant position to an underlying aggression. When other people notice this defensive posture / ego-state they too become defensive to protect themselves in case the passive aggression becomes active. When the individual with paranoid personality disorder sees others take on the defensive posture, they switch from a passive, defensive child-ego state to the complimentary ego-state that identifies with the aggressor that victimized them in the past. When the paranoid individual sees the world as aggressive, they are projecting the internalize image of the aggressor onto others. When others respond defensively, they are taking on, or identifying with this role - projective identification. The paranoid individuals follows suite by also identifying with the role of the aggressive and switching ego states: their posture will go from slouched, fetal and defensive to open-shouldered and offensive, their inflection will go from victimized to aggressive, their emotional reaction will go from regressive self-pity to a callous lack of empathy tied to rationalization defense mechanisms. Beck's cognitive schemas, at least in this book, cannot describe these radical shifts in identity, ego-states or 'ways of being' that or quite easily observable in personality pathology. However, OR theory rejects constraining and circumscribed approaches to conceptualizing personality, such as Freud's 'mental apparatus' model of personality. They want to purely conceptualize each client, which can be difficult and tiresome. I believe Beck's schema's can offer a medium that composes the 'stuff' of ego-states, thereby offering a way for OR theorists to conceptualize personality in a more organized manner. Additionally, this integration of the two theory's can explain how schemas can result in immense shifts in personality, identity and ways of being that Beck's theory otherwise cannot explain. Schemas consist of cognitive concepts or nodes that are related to each other to varying degrees (a psychological correlation between concepts). When a set of concepts are highly enough correlated, they create a schema: the physical parts of a dog are related to form a dog-schema. However, concepts are related between various schemas as well: dogs and cats both have wet noses, thus feeling a wet nose sniff your leg ought to equally elicit schemas of cats and dogs for a person who is equally familiar with both animals. Any event will be associated with a handful of cognitive concepts which will 'active' a handful of schemas that shape how we cognitively and emotionally process that event and behave in reaction to that event. In an individual who lacks ego integrity - whose personality consists of multiple split-off ego states - the even will active clusters of schemas associated with various ego states. For example, going back to the individual with paranoid personality disorder, the event of a social interaction elicits a belief that the world and people are malevolent, activating two clusters of schemas. The first cluster constitutes the defensive child-ego-state of the paranoid individual who sees the social interaction through the same lens that they saw the world after being victimized as a child: they regress to that period of their life. The second cluster of schemas constitute the aggressor-ego state, which is latent until the individual sees evidence in the social interaction that seems to provide proof their their belief is true: the the world and people are malevolent. If the client can recognize components (schemas, cognitive processes, etc) of an unhealthy ego-state, they can attempt new, healthier ways of being and begin defining the strong, adaptive components of their self as differentiated from those unhealthy states. Often these clients have the experience of 'being along for the ride:' their health, adaptive self is completely out of control to unhealthy-ego states. This is what Beck would call valence of schemas & dynamic psychology would call cathexis. Defining unhealthy vs adaptive ego states shifts cathexis to adaptive ego states. This process compartmentalizes maladaptive ego-states, yet once the client works through the unresolved emotions, the components, or schemas, of those ego states can be integrated with the adaptive, strong ego into a gestalt, whole, or healthy, integrated personality. I've read pretty much everything on the internet, and all of the major books available on Amazon on this subject. THIS is the best book, and the only one you really need to read.It's incredibly comprehensive, covering all of the aspects of the disorder, symptoms including in more detail than you find on the internet, and importantly, case study after case study so you can see similarities with your own or your loved one's disease pattern.My family has this, including myself. This book gave me the information I needed to go to battle and make sure that I not only fixed it for myself, but can make sure my kids and siblings fix it.What I found most interesting is the info on how it interacts with other diseases. So for each person, they can see how perhaps some of their other health issues might be being influenced, caused, or in some cases helped by their iron overload. Fascinating.The one takeaway is that everyone should have their Ferritin and Iron Saturation % tested at least once every few years, because it's a cheap test and it can avoid death if you catch an iron disorder early. Those with high Ferritin and a saturation over 45% should have genetic testing, which isn't cheap but can nail the diagnosis. And then they should begin giving blood, maybe as frequently as twice a week in the most critical cases. Obviously, under the supervision and direction of an MD. This book will give you the "best practices" for treatment to share and discuss with your physician (you an also find it on the Iron Disorders website for free too) so that both of you can get your care plan right.Anyway, if you have iron issues or have a loved one with iron issues, this is a book you need to buy and read cover to cover. If caught early, it's an easy disease to treat, which is why you don't want to delay or mess around.

There is good information on the internet about this disorder but much of it is rather vague or seems to somewhat contradict itself among the different sources. This book is a one stop shop written by the authorities on the subject. It is all of the information you always wanted to know but were to afraid to ask. It is presented well and it is very thorough. Sure some of the information is rather technical but it is a great reference that I find myself going back to over and over. So if you don't get it all on the first read, give it a week and read it again. If you take the time to read this book cover to cover you will probably know much more about the disorder than the majority if the Doctors out there and that is a real blessing and a same at the same time. This disorder is a silent killer. After reading this book, I now have regular "informed" discussions with my Doctor about my situation and treatment plan. It also opened my eyes that not all people have the same classic symptoms that are described elsewhere, many of the minor symptoms presented in the book fit my situation exactly and my Doctor never made the correlation. I am also convinced now that my Grandmother died of this disorder and we never had a clue. The chapter with the case histories from people who have this disorder and their journey trying to work with doctors to get a handle on their health issues was worth the money alone.

I have transitioned over the summer to 100 mcg of synthroid. In November, my throid panel will be tested for adequate conversion to Free T3. In April of 2012, my reverse T3 was 863. A month later without further meds, it was still 179 and dominant per the RT3 syndrome calculation. I felt lousy then and feel lousy today. I have another month to go.

I was a former pharmaceutical and medical equipment sales rep. for many years and had never heard of Hemochromatosis. My brother was diagnosed recently and this book helped me understand the disorder, and gave great insight into what it all means. I only wish there were a more updated guide ...but I found this book to be very comprehensive and helpful for our family.

It took me 15 years to find this guide and I learned or confirmed more in 15 minutes than I have learned through 15 years of medical treatment. The Iron Disorders Institute Guide to Hemochromatosis offers a step by step guide to understanding this disease from its genetic beginnings through treatment to how to control the course of the illness. Detailed descriptions of the testing required and how to put that information together is provided in easy to understand language. I have changed doctors because my former physician did not understand the critical importance of pretesting prior to phlebotomy. After reading the book, I feel more in control of my body than I have ever felt. I know what I am doing with diet is scientifically accurate and has positive consequences and that my current course of treatment is the best possible for me. I highly recommend this book for both patient and physician.

This is a book for advanced MS Windows developers. It goes deeply into the debugging process and it doesn't have an introduction for beginners or intermediate programmers. This is a vintage 2008 book and has testing processes for Vista.The writing is dry and to the point but effective. I found the kernel dumps and the stack information to be time consuming and far too manual to be productive. I have found the people at Microsoft to be mired in this environment of command line investigation. They seem unable to creatively produce a tool to automate this process and produce a convenient process that is both effective and proper for programmers who aren't familiar with this intricate method of investigation.However, it is good to know how much time and training the process requires to produce detailed results.If you are trapped in the intricacies of debugging IPC, service errors, or long running problems this book may hold the answers. Otherwise, the answer to what you are looking to accomplish will be found in the standard debugging tools and error notification processes. Answer

This is the book I wanted to read when I started doing Windows crash dump analysis more than 5 years ago. Although other excellent Windows debugging books existed at that time including "Debugging Applications" written by John Robbins and "Debugging Windows Programs: Strategies, Tools, and Techniques for Visual C++ Programmers" written by Everett N. McKay and Mike Woodring I needed a book that discusses debugging in the context of WinDbg and other tools from Debugging Tools for Windows package. So I had to learn from day-to-day experience and WinDbg help. Now WinDbg is a de facto standard in debugging and troubleshooting on Windows platforms and the book comes at the right time to teach the best practices and techniques. I'm reading it sequentially and I'm on the page 387 at the moment and I have already learnt techniques and debugging strategies I missed due to certain habits in using WinDbg. Even if you do mostly memory dump analysis and not live debugging of your product, you also will learn a lot to apply in your day-to-day problem identification and troubleshooting. I have little to add to the effusive praise of previous reviewers. This is a one-of-kind book. An instant classic.Beware, however. As others have noted, this is definitely an _advanced_ book. If you're not comfortable with arcane command syntax, bits and bytes, and such this will be painful to incomprehensible for you. On the other hand, I dare say you will never be a true Master Debugger until you have a good grasp of this material.You would do well to start with Debugging Microsoft .NET 2.0 Applications or the now-unavailable Debugging Applications for Microsoft .NET and Microsoft Windows. Both will give you an easier introduction to WinDbg. The latter, older volume has much more information on native code debugging than the newer version. As they also cover the Visual Studio debugger in detail, most developers need go no further than one of these.Note that WinDbg _can_ be used with SOS and ADPlus to do some pretty fancy .NET debugging that isn't possible with Visual Studio alone. For that matter, the .NET CLR on Windows is implemented using the same Windows API as any native application. I've seen WinDbg used to trace bugs through C# application code down to find that the defect was actually in the CLR or Windows itself. John Robbins (author of the previously mentioned books) states in Chapter 6 of the latest version that "in our consulting work at Wintellect, which as you know works on the toughest bugs, we use WinDBG nearly 70 percent of the time."Don't ignore this book just because you program in .NET!Watch out for the font used in the listings though. Not being a master myself, I've been stumped for quite a while because the letter 'l' looks like the number '1' in the font they use. (I've been assiduously following the examples line-by-line).I also recall being stumped because of an error or two in the text, though I admit I can't find them now. These as you can imagine could be a serious problem given the arcane and undocumented nature of quite a bit of the material. Just make sure you check the errata periodically. Ironically, the errata web page for the book is not functioning at the moment...

Good read. Easy to follow strategy. So simple but it works. You will do much better over the long if you limit you choices to new 52 week highs in stocks that have been trending up. Avoid the losing strategies of bottom picking and averaging down on underperfomers and you will find yourself in the win column more often. Good luck to all.

The strategy described here is not new. But it is nice to have all pulled together in a short descriptive list. I was able to recreate the strategy for an easy scan in TC2000 and start using it to see what stocks qualify presently. I was also able to see these conditions met in the past history of a stock on a chart and see how the stock behaved subsequently.I recommend this book and suggest you experiment with the strategy and do some paper trading to gain experience in managing the trade - which is always more important than the entry.

A person who regards accumulation of enormous wealth as a desirable objective and who spends his or her time not as an investor but as a consultant surely thinks that he or she can make more wealth as a consultant than as an investor.And what's offered here is just a booklet written as bait to get you to purchase still more consultation from these people who themselves cannot get rich by investing.

I like how simple the strategy is; and I like how counter intuitive it is to buy stocks making the new highs on higher relative volume. I belong to a number of trader chat rooms, and something I often hear from the gurus are "wait for a pullback before entry." That makes sense to not chase; but there are also many times that the price rockets higher, leaving us behind. I like the rationale behind picking stocks making new highs because there are no 'Bagholders' and the sky is the limit, when there is not clear price resistance looming overhead.

I'm 85, retired and have been trading stocks for more than 40 years but I'm always open to learning new tricks. Matthew Kratter's "Rocket Stocks" book had me panting with eagerness as I flipped through the pages. Haven't tried his clear, specific steps yet, but I know some of them work, as I've learned them on my own over the years. But I can't wait to try his overall strategy. This one Kindle edition has inspired me enough that I'm going to send for others of his. Thanks, Michael.

Concise and well written. This book has some very good ideas for those who want to find those stocks that make big moves in short time spans. Personally, I have been studying these types of stocks for the last few years, and the ideas put forth in this book pretty much confirm what I have found, plus a few additional insights. For less than the price of a cheeseburger, you can't go wrong. Highly recommend.

This book is a well written concise momentum strategy with specific rules and recommended optional conditions to increase the probability of a successful trade. Exit options are offered for both short term and longer term trades. The author is available for questions by e-mail. I have taken advantage of this offer and the author promptly responded to my questions. I highly recommend this book.

I have been using the darvas method for buying stocks making all time highs. This book has made it much easier and I am very thankful for how low the price was to purchase the kindle one.I have re read this many times and have been using this book to keep me on the rules.The 50/200 day moving average i have never considered as a way to decide on buying or selling a stock.If there were a higher rating than 5 stars i would give it.This like the nicholas darvas book how he made 2million in the stock market just being a dancer everyone should have in there collection of great trading books.This is a 10 and hopefully will become a classic.
