I am enjoying this book thoroughly, working through it cover to cover and finding that the lesson files are complete and the concepts are clearly presented and in an orderly fashion. A great learning system. Logic Pro X seems to be worthy of 'taking it from the top' and learning it all over again, even if you've used older versions of Logic Pro, LPX is a whole new environment with all new and well-designed controls. Lovin' It! Good Job Apple and Good Job David. Highly Recommended.

Just the book I needed to introduce a motivated composer to computer-based music production. The exercises are precisely structured with ample details on what to expect, where to look for various settings, functions and audio controls. My previous experience with music production software was PC-based cubase. There has been a long period since that and the power and consequently the complexities of the programs. Little knowledge transferred from my previous work and so, this book is the "leg up" I desperately needed. Exercises are predicted to take a certain amount of time, so I can establish a lesson plan, according to my time availability. My ultimate goal is to connect my synthesiser/keyboard as well as electric guitars to add sampling capability. I am yet far from that understanding, but already feeling the creative juices flow.

Didn't think twice when I bought this one, as I had good experience from the David's preceding book about Logic Pro 9. I had some worries, though, that much of the information would be redundant. My worries were needless; the new book primarily focuses on all the new functionality provided with Pro X. This being said, it's still a book that covers/brings all the basic knowledge you need to have to work with Logic. These training books are certified by Apple, so they hold a high quality. I specifically like the consistent step-by-step approach. Everything is explained in detail and illustrated by both pictures and easy-to-follow guidelines. The book comes with comprehensive audio and project material, which is great when you need to be hands-on. I bought the ebook/ iPad Kindle version, so had to download the files from the publisher's web site. It went easy and smooth. All in all, I can only recommend this book. It covers all main aspects of music creation with Logic Pro X, without being cluttered or diving too much into depth. It keeps a good balance between essential information and information for general understanding. Lastly, I need to say that this is not for everyone. If you don't wish to read 500 pages while doing your hands-on exercises, I would recommend to use video-based tutorial services like those provided by macProVideo.com instead. They're really great too!

gets the job done. i'm only half-way through the book right now and i feel it is efficiently teaching me all i need to know about logic. My only complaint is that logic requires about 50 GB of hard drive space to download the complete library of loops and instruments, and i opted not to do that until i get an external hard drive. however, the book makes frequent use of these loops and without them you will have to improvise a lot of the time with a limited library. you can still get the point of each lesson, but you might be lost some of the time trying to figure out what the book is referencing when the sounds in your project don't match what is being described.

(Five stars when read with the PDF updates file)Well written and super easy to follow with many great illustrations and simple explanations of some pretty complex topics. Some Logic's areas could probably have books all to themselves so if your expecting a lot of detail on EXS-24 programming or what every plug-in does this one isn't for you. That said a definite must read for anyone starting out, or who's just dabbled on the surface with Logic.IMPORTANT (at least until a new edition is published) if you are using Logic X 10.1 (Update released Jan. 2015) then while you download the various lesson and media files make sure you also download the PDF file with some updated text and illustrations. Nearly every time my system didn't behave as described or my menus/screen looked different it was described in the PDF and was a result of the upgrade.David also runs the logicprohelp website and does answer many of the questions on the forum. Better yet he doesn't deride/patronise those of us who are still learning this stuff or are newbies.

This book is great. It gets you started off on the right foot by explaining Apple loops and how you can use them to quickly put together a song. By the end of the first chapter you will have created a hip hop song just using loops. It gets into audio tracks, the use of the virtual Drummer feature, how to use the various elements of MIDI, the built in plug-ins and much more.Its pretty comprehensive and each chapter builds on the last. So you learn shortcut commands and how to navigate the interface because you continuosly use some of the same methods throughout the exercises. The thing I really like about it is it takes you step by step through the features with hands on exercises and quizes at the end of each chapter. This book is the official training book if you want to take the Logic Pro exam.

I've only gone through the first few chapters but learned so much. I am a beginner with Logic so this was exactly what I needed. I guess this is why it is the Apple Certified Method.The method is lab based so it's like being in a classroom only without the instructor.

About the Author

Lewis Dartnell is a Professor of Science Communication at the University of Westminster. Before that, he completed his biology degree at the University of Oxford and his PhD at UCL, and then worked as the UK Space Agency research fellow at the University of Leicester, studying astrobiology and searching for signs of life on Mars. What a fascinating and affecting memoir. I grew up with Maria from Sesame Street being one of my earliest, closest, most trusted Puerto Rican role models so of course I was intrigued to read about her. It's a bit of a culture shock to go from Sesame Street to Sonia Manzano's real life growing up in the Bronx with an abusive father, but ultimately it makes me respect the actress even more. Sonia's memories of her thoughts and feelings growing up put you right in the picture and--darn it--I wish the book were longer. I don't want to stop reading.

For anyone who grew up watching Sesame Street, this us a great book. Pulling the curtain away from the wizard if Oz, is good but confirms a much harder world that we know is reality. Maria, or Sonya gives an account of how she got the part and the world around her that continued to change as she played the part. Beauty and harshness at the same time. Sonya, thank you for writing this. You destroyed an illusion but created the seeds for change for the future. Thank you for so many years on Sesame Street and then finally crossing over in your book. Took courage.

I read this during choose an autobiography or memoir month for my book club. I found it slightly dull. When she got to high school it got better. The last line is, "because there was nothing else to do but wait for the next thing to happen." I felt like I was waiting for the next thing to happen the whole book. Just waiting, nothing really happened. Now a book that picks up here where she becomes Maria might be better.

Personally, this book was like going home. She describes it exactly as it was. Conflicts and fights within the family and yet moments of love and forgiveness. Growing up in New York gave some of us the opportunity to enjoy museums, summer camps, Broadway shows, in other words culture that other impoverished children are not afforded in this country. These opportunities opened our eyes to the outside world of the ghettos inspite of the prejudices that forced us into them. Even as a child I could see that there was a chance to live differently with education. From one Boricua to another, thank you for taking me back.

I read this book as part of Las Madres Book Club. I'm hoping for more by Sonia.The book covers snippets of her childhood and into the very beginnings of her adulthood. I can relate to a lot of what she dealt with, her struggle and questioning of things.

Interesting read about someone I thought I knew since my kids saw her everyday. Would love to have her share more about her life after she was hired to Sesame Street.

Great book! Highly recommend!

Very honest and moving account. As someone who loved watching Maria with my kids, I enjoyed it tremendously.

I have been acquainted with this book since 15 years ago.I have taught this book for 8 years in undergraduate courses . It is the only book in polymer chemistry which has nearly all the topics relating to polymer chemistry both for beginners and also for advanced level readers .Even though it is old it has many subjects all together that can not be found in another book .I think such topics as engineering subjects and kinetics and also molecular weight equations should be explained more to be more understandable to all and this is the main disadvantages of the book .

While the illustrations are excellent, the actual content leaves much to be desired. The writing style is very stilted and in an attempt to “simplify” the stories or modify them for kids it loses any real depth to the stories. As well as completely re-writing some of the stories, an example being Medusa, now I get that you may not want to get into Poseidon raping her in Athena’s temple, leading to Athena punishing her, but the idea of Poseidon looking at her and saying weird things like she had poisonous locks and that was good, scaly skin and that was good, and so on then falling asleep in her arms is just kinda weird. If you want pretty pictures and a lazy intro to Greek myths it is fine, if you want the real stories move on.

This book consists of 25 biographical sketches of figures from Greek Mythology. It’s one of those books that grew on me, and the reason it grew on me was a few of the chapters toward the end were engaging, such as those about Heracles, Jason, and Helen. This also means that the number of stars I gave it is fairly meaningless. It was in no danger of getting 5 stars nor 1, but could’ve been anywhere in between at various points in my reading.The problem with the book is that the unit of interest isn’t the myth, i.e. not the story, but rather the mythical figure, the various gods and heroes of ancient Greece. Because of this organization, some of the chapters have a tight and memorable story, such as that of Heracles and his 12 labors, while others are just piles of genealogical facts mixed with odd mythical happenings (e.g. who burst from whose forehead) and tossed with that mythical figure’s bit parts in larger myths. The book is a good, solid reference book for schoolkids doing research on Greek Mythology, but much of it’s not very engaging to read.The graphics are beautiful and colorful, if a bit artsy (not always instantaneously clear in subject.) There are maps, a timeline describing happenings of ancient Greece -- real and mythical, a bibliography, and a quick guide to the characters that would make more sense if the book wasn’t a collection of relatively brief biographical sketches to begin with (but repetition has its merits, particularly for children.)If you’re looking for a collection of biographies of mythical Greeks (i.e. a reference for children,) then this is a good book for you. If you’re looking to get your kids intrigued by the Greek myths, then you might want to shop around. Put another way, if you’re looking for a version of what Neil Gaiman did with this “Norse Mythology,” only for the Greeks, this isn’t it.

I was really disappointed after reading this book. The writing style is unpleasant and jumps around quite a bit, making it hard to keep track of anything. Most of the myths are actually only descriptions of the god's births and parentage. A number of these myths are inaccurate as well, which I found to be the most disappointing aspect of the book. I wouldn't even recommend this to people just starting out, it is not interesting to read and the author seems more interested in being pc than staying true to the actual mythology. All in all a waste of time and money.

Absolutely in love with this book, the illustrations are great!The book made in the way that will be interesting for both a child and an adult.Stories are pretty short (2 pages with small illustrations for each character) what makes it easy to read without losing attention.

Simply LOVE IT! The binding, the artwork, the tales, the quality of the paper.. every detail of this book makes it wonderful! I was looking for a book like this since it's perfect for children. It makes it fun for them to read. The only thing is that some of the vocabulary is a bit advance so you will definitely need to read it to them.I bought also the Egyptian and Norse mythology and will definitely buy the Tales from the Arabian Night too.Click the button if this review helped you at all. :)

Growing up my favorite unit in history was Greek mythology. I looked for a basic Greek mythology book for what seems like forever now because I was holding out for a book with really good illustrations and I found that in this book. The stories are short and to the point without feeling rushed and the stories are in order. Really well done!

This is a good book for my children to start them on Greek Mythology. After reading it several times though I've had to buy other books for them to go further in depth.

I bought this book for my son. He's much too young to read it yet, but my enthusiasm got the best of me. I think it's great. Both the text and the art will give a young reader a great feel for how paleontologists currently view dinosaurs and related animals. (For anyone who may not already know, Bakker is one of the most influential living paleontologists.) There are no featherless velociraptors (thank goodness) and even the Tyrannosaurus rex is painted with a feather-like covering. The book doesn't try to be an encyclopedia; instead serving as a nice introduction to the place of dinosaurs in the history of animal life, describing (or at least speculating about) their emergence, evolutionary history, notable characteristics and behavior, and finally, their extinction. Although there are paleoartists whose work I like even more than Rey's, his paintings are colorful, lively, and dynamic. (There are some really amazing paleoartists out there; even if he's not your favorite, Rey's work is still pretty great. I did find Ichthyosaurus on page 29 a bit odd. On the other hand, Rey's pterosaurs consistently impressed me.)I'm looking forward to reading this to my son when he's old enough. It's nice to have available a scientifically reliable, up-to-date treatment of dinosaurs aimed squarely at young children.

This book is an updated, contemporary version of the Giant Golden Book of Dinosaurs and Other Prehistoric Reptiles, one of the great children's dinosaur books of all time. It is even laid out very much like the original, including its (over-sized) dimensions, the Brachiosaurus cover and the fossil maps on the front and back endpapers,The original was authored by children's book writer Jane Werner Watson and was pedestrian at best. But it featured the magnificent artwork of Rudolph Zallinger, which was and remains the central appeal of the book. This new version is written by Paleontologist Robert Bakker. Dr. Bakker's expertise gives his highly readable, engaging and understandable text a dimension completely lacking in the original. He manages to combine a coherent, if concise, historiography of dinosaur science with current prehistoric taxonomy. He also addresses the questions of dinosaur origins (reptiles vs. birds), cold-blooded or warm-blooded, and feathered dinosaurs, while offering the scientific basis for each. It's a children's book, so it's far from comprehensive, but as an adult who has not stayed current with the seemingly dizzying changes in dinosaur science, I found Dr. Bakker's explanations enormously helpful in sorting it all out.The book is beautifully illustrated by paleoartist Luis V. Rey. He had a tough act to follow in Rudolph Zallinger, one of the greatest dinosaur artists of all time. Rey's dinosaurs are quite different than the images I grew up with, but beautifully rendered and far more reflective of the contemporary understanding of dinosaur biology. His blue feathered Tyrannosaurs are striking and strange. The one criticism I have is that Rey's illustrations use perspective to dramatic effect, featuring many close-up images. Consequently, the backgrounds are often lost, while in other cases, multiple images create significant differences in scale on the same page. The result is a little bit of incoherence. Compared to the sprawling prehistoric landscapes of Zallinger, seamlessly filled with various dinosaurs, Rey's illustrations suffer.But I'm splitting hairs. This is an outstanding book. Without question, it is the best combination of educational content and artwork I have yet seen in a children's dinosaur book.

I'm giving this book five stars because it's only fair not to compare it to the original "Giant Golden Book of Dinosaurs and Other Prehistoric Reptiles" [by Jane Werner Watson (Author), Rudolph F. Zallinger (Illustrator)]; standing alone, it deserves five stars, but it's hard to compete with the original which was so outstanding.That having been said, the real pleasure of this latest edition is the illustrations, which are extremely vibrant and show the dinosaurs as the powerful, wondrous beasts that they must have been. The text is also good, but somehow not quite as enthralling as the first book (there I go again, I'm really trying hard not to compare them!). Really, in the end, I just wish this book were about twice as thick. It feels like there's so much missing that could have been in there, particularly further information about just HOW we know all of this stuff about dinosaurs, and what paleontologists do to learn about them.The best I could ever recommend would be to get both this book and its predecessor. The first one has tons of information and beautiful illustrations, but it's out-of-date. The latest book is an excellent supplement which shows how our knowledge has changed over time.

This golden book of dinosaurs was around for a long time, my son had it in the 80s! But it's been updated with all of the latest findings in the paleontology world. Extremely accurate. Love it. And it's written with kids in mind. My 4 yr old and I have a number of dino books, and he likes this one the best!

Ideal for ages 3 and up... My three year old grandson wore this book out and my 8 year-old was thrilled to receive it as a birthday present... and when my daughter, my wife and I read it we all learned something...

Great book. One of the museum curators at my local Natural History Museum encouraged me to purchase this book to teach my two year old about dinosaurs. I found it very dense but informative. My child enjoys looking through the beautifully illustrated book. It is definitively worth the $.

Awesome book of dinosaurs for kids young and old.

4 yr old grandson is completely immersed in this book. He knows which are or aren't dinosaurs, and when they lived....amazing book with incredible pictures.
