Book covers EW basics satisfactorily (but only if the reader is well educated in physics and mathematics) but does not present enough material to justify its exorbitant cost. If EW 102 were merged in then it would be a decent value. Another book the reader might substitute for this one, as an introduction to electronic warfare, would be An Illustrated Guide to the Techniques and Equipment of Electronic Warfare. Although more than 30 years old, this affordable book covers EW essentials that have not changed from its inception during WW2. The only really important thing missing in the Guide that is in EW 101 is coverage of spread spectrum technologies.It must be stressed that EW 101 is written for budding EW professionals with prior familiarity with basic EW principles. Other than a terse few paragraphs giving the textbook definitions of the Electronic Attack, Electronic Defense, and Electronic Support missions (the "old" ECM/ECCM/ESM), there is absolutely no introduction to EW concepts. Exactly what "jamming" is, what kinds there are, and their differences are not explained other than the dense math equations presented. Beginners and laypersons interested in finding out what EW is about will be absolutely befuddled by this book. Do check out the recommended Guide for a comprehensible overview of EW topics.One last thing that irritates me is that what is now called "Electronic Support Measures" was back in my day called "Electronic SURVEILLANCE Measures". They shouldn't have changed it because the word "support" doesn't really mean anything concrete. As with doing away with the traditional terms ECM and ECCM, it's just more confusion injected into an already esoteric subject. We are getting too geeky with this, people!

I really enjoyed this book and found it incredibly useful in my job, which does not require an in depth knowledge of EW. My background is a BS in mechanical engineer and graduated a little over a year ago. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that has to work with EW or even just radar. Although the book it steered towards EW, many radar concepts are explained.

This text book gave a great overview into what's happening in Electronic War and how it is done. I liked it. The book provided the analytic formulas to perform gain calculations without being overdependent on the mathematics to understand the basics. The book covered Radar Warning Receivers (RWR) which I'd had no experience with and provided a clear explanation of how they work and what technical parameters are important. I've worked in the industry for a while, but I wished I'd read this 10 years earlier.

For anyone who wants to understand what Electronic Warfare is, this book is a great introduction.From the basics to advanced usage, this book introduces the reader to the world of EW and sets the stage for EW 102.

I bought these book for a very cheap price which was even below the price of second hand book price at some sites and also at my college. So I say that I had a gr8 dealThank you amazon.

This book is very easy to read and understand by not getting into all the same details. Suitable for those who wants an overview of EW but not going too deep into the topic.

Lacking in technical detail. It provided a high school level presentation of EW concepts. Author's lack of familiarity with the Range equation was evident.

Husband loves this book, condition and price were great. Arrived quickly.

I live this book to customize by details that are different and not en mass. It really allows you to manipulate the fabric to make glorious clothing that no one else will have.

I love, love, love this book! It is well written, full of amazing examples, very readable. I've tried quite a few of the techniques in the book, found a few errors (such as one of the smocking patterns is not correct) but the description and photos are so accurate that it isn't difficult to figure out what to change. One of the most clever things about this book is that all the examples are done using the same undyed muslin fabric so you really focus on the fabric manipulation. For quilters, crafters, couture designers and all other sewers this book is a great "bible" of techniques to keep on hand. And so much fun to read through and imagine what you will make next!

Encyclopedic. This book is nothing more nor less than a categorized set of instructions for three-dimensional fabric manipulations. It's pretty exhaustive as a relates to endless variations of gathering, pleating, etc. These are not the only ways to manipulate fabric into shapes, of course. There are plenty of pattern, cut, and sew techniques that produce dimensional effects also. And, in fact, a few of the techniques in this book can be combined in that way, too.As many, many others have pointed out, the photos are black-and-white, the fabric used for demonstration is muslin, and the instructions are high-level. I.e., you better have some background sewing experience and a solid grounding at least at the intermediate level to really take advantage of this book. If you do have that, you are really going to enjoy this book! It truly is one of the better sewing technique books I have encountered in many years. On the flipside, if you do not have the background, if you need detailed step-by-step instructions along with a matching pictures, or don't have a good grasp of sewing terminology, this is absolutely not the book for you!Both my wife and I read this book cover to cover, which is pretty amazing for a technique book of any kind. And it will be used for projects immediately. (Please note this is not a project book!)As with any technique book with such scope, there is more breadth than depth in some areas. Entire books can and have been written on many of the individual techniques or categories of techniques described here. So if you are really advanced quilter, you will find the quilting section thin. If you are a smocker, the smocking section will appear thin. And so on. Much of the value is in opening your eyes to possibilities – and with enough information to execute on them.This one is a lot of fun for its target audience. Those who are not in that category will find it something of a frustrating head scratcher.

This really is a book about how to perform miracles with fabric! I disagree with Gingercook that this is not a book for novices or beginning seamstresses. I am just learning to use my Viking Topaz 30, taking lessons at the best sewing shop in Las Vegas, but I LOVE this book and, as others have said, cannot put it down! I have found ANSWERS to every question you could possibly have concerning getting fabric to do what you want it to do. I want to make a ruffle skirt for my 4 year old grand-daughter, but I want to make one with ruffles that stand out and "float" - not just hang there. Maybe other people know about Circular Flounce and cutting the ruffle pieces (as it shows on page 67) from a CIRCLE OF FABRIC - the strip closest to the center of the circle has tremendous flare, the next strip not so much and the third strip (which is cut farthest from the center of the circle has very little flare. The diagrams in this book are the best I have ever seen and they are on every page, helping you to understand, totally, how to do each step. It explains GRAINLINE BALANCE ON PAGE 70, with diagrams. Sorry but I had never heard of grainline balance, but I will never forget it now! I had never heard of a GODET, now I can't wait to try to make one and the SQUARE GODET shown on page 84 is one of the most beautiful things I have seen. Just take a large hankerchief (or large square of fabric) hold it by one of the 4 corners and let the fabric drape by itself. The drawing on page 84 shows this with 4 folds ending in a handkerchief edge. I can't wait to try to make one. I am taking this book to my instructors so they can teach me how to make a godet (go-day).I have never seen so many different drapery pleats. I especially like the CARTRIDGE PLEAT. Colette not only shows you all the different pleats, but she also shows you how to change them and make them look completely different.This book is an INSPIRATION, but it is not a book about which fabric to choose to make the miracles happen. It is about being able to make these miracles happen with ALL KINDS OF FABRIC.I'm taking classes in Heirloom sewing and this book shows how to do many of the Heirloom techniques and shows it with diagrams, making it easy to understand how to do all those intricate, gorgeous Shark's Teeth, Slashed Tucks, Keyhole Tucks, etc. The book also includes a chapter on Quilting and one on Stuffed Quilting & Applique, teaching you things that almost make you drool - because they are pieces of art and belong in a museum.I purchased this book on a whim while I was deciding whether or not to purchase the Colette Sewing Handbook by Sarai Mitnick and I ended up buying both of them.EVERY PERSON WHO SEWS OR WHO IS THINKING OF SEWING SHOULD OWN THIS BOOK. It is an inspirational book and a book of HOW TO PERFORM MIRACLES with fabric!

Good information, but I was very disappointed because all the pictures are black and white, and it is difficult to see the detail. I would have paid a little extra to have those pictures in High Definition and in color.

I accidentally ordered 2, but once I got them I decided to hang onto the extra to give as a gift. Clear, simple explanations of a variety of techniques from the mundane to the fantastic. Each section shows you a technique, such as pleating, and progresses from the basics to the more artistic uses of that technique. Lots of pictures and diagrams, as well as explanations for both hand and machine work. It will make you start projects you didn't know you wanted to do!

"A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions." This book has certainly filled in all the gaps I had looking into the history of all major art movements (specifically modern design related movements). More than ever after reading this book, I have become inspired if not more motivated than ever to refine and develop my own vision/system for designing things. You honestly just can't get the same type of quality education/inspiration browsing through the web on Google, Wikipedia, or even going to school for that matter :o. Who knew history could be such a breath of fresh air! It certainly feels like you're picking the brains of the past and retrieving real-world context and experience from these classic modernist designers.If you're serious about being a world class graphic designer someday, you have to read this book. I love how in the intro elegantly explained that there are 3 major types of modernists: 1. Rational moderns, 2. Exuberant moderns, and 3. Eclectic moderns. --Really does give you a framework on looking/ categorizing things. In terms of the content itself, the author is very good at capturing the true essence of each artist with carefully selected works, quotes, and background of all the selected pioneers. In my opinion, super practical esp. for visual learners like myself.The author does a great job in putting these modern artists in the context of how each of them has applied radical, original modernist values during the time design was branching out of the extremes of fine arts and mainstream advertisements (around the 1920's). How the author managed to isolate all the trends and “isms” (such as impressionism, expressionism, futurism, dadaism, cubism, etc.) of all the major art movements around the 1920's, is truly astonishing! I applaud these authors for their hard work, attention to details, and passion to share their knowledge with the rest of us. Good content is not easy to make. These guys have to have learned everything there is about all the artist and their own books along with the entire history from the early expressionist era to everything after WW2.... From the intro and disclosure of how they chose which designers to show examples from to the very end, they manage to remain consistent, comprehensive, and concise throughout the entire book. Diving deep on the hand-picked early immigrant graphic designers who came to America around WW1 and American designers whom all contributed to this early shift in what has now become modern graphic design. I couldn’t recommend this book enough and would easily pay a lot more for it too. I must admit, for $34, this is a total steal. This book is beautiful inside and out. I am actually considering buying another one so that I can start annotating it >__<. I even made my own old school (not so modern, but super practical) paper bag book cover so that I can feel comfortable taking this book to coffee shops! After reading this book, I can say that I've walked away with a strong understanding of key artists and the ability to connect the dots much easier moving forward in this ever-changing world we live in.

This is a wonderful book that covers the expected designers but also a whole host of lesser known designers. A stunning and informative book.

A timely and lavishly illustrated book that fills a gap in American graphic design history. The period is mid-century and the authors explore the work of sixty-three designers whose work reflected the ideals of European modernism. This was based on various creative movements but in particular the Bauhaus, from the thirties and Swiss style in the fifties.The six page illustrated introduction provides a succinct overview with some interesting observations about typography: Akzidenz Grotesk and Helvetica versus the rest. This is followed by a chapter (ninety-four pages) on eighteen emigres, designers who were born and trained in Europe but moved to America. It's probably this group who are the originators of graphic Modernism and their influence on the US born designers that feature in the 'Homegrown' chapter. Some of these foreign born designers are rightly considered part of the countries design heritage, people like Josef Albers, Herbert Bayer, Alexey Brodovitch, Erik Nitsche, Ladislav Sutnar and Massimo Vignelli.The 205 pages devoted to 'Homegrown' designers interestingly includes some who were not particularly well known but contributed to the Modernist style, for example, John and Mary Condon, Donald and Ann Crews, Charles Goslin, Burton Kramer and Alexander Ross. Most of the names in the chapter are, of course, well known including my favorites Saul Bass, Rudolf de Harak, Lou Dorfsman, Herb Lubalin, John Massey, Reid Miles and Bradbury Thompson, designers, who in fact, influenced my creative output in the decades from 1960.The design of the book is itself a reflection of Modernism, clean typography and straightforward, elegant page design. Each name starts on the left-hand page with a portrait and a several hundred word essay, the right has work examples and these continue onto the next spread and in some cases another spread, too. There are 765 work examples (in the two designer chapters) all sufficiently big enough to appreciate the design, captions give the date and client and nicely some include background detail about the designer's intentions. The back pages have a comprenhensive bibliography and index.Anyone who is interested in mid-century graphic design, or who was working creatively through these years, will find this book fascinating and design students should read a copy to understand and appreciate their graphic heritage.

A great book on the topic. I totally agree with the comments One of Steve Heller's finest! (I probably own 20 of his books). Also agree with lavishly illustrated - it is. Larger and higher quality reproduction than the majority of Mr. Heller's books. Just kind of wish Alexander Girard would have made the cut in that I think he is one of the more creative and prolific artists/designers of that time and of that ilk/style. Perhaps because he is a little to folky and not corporate enough. Still an awesome book.

Wonderful overview of the Bible for either people new to the Bible or even those fairly familiar with the Bible. The charts and graphics are amazing! They capture complex topics succinctly and in a way that is easier to digest. We are reading this together as a family and loving it - kids and adults are getting so much out of it!

Not finished yet but i love it so far. Its exactly what I was hopping for. Kind of a step by step knowledge of the history and sequence of the Bible and where it all happened.. completely done in easy wording and pictures. Highly recommended.

I am enjoying this book thoroughly, working through it cover to cover and finding that the lesson files are complete and the concepts are clearly presented and in an orderly fashion. A great learning system. Logic Pro X seems to be worthy of 'taking it from the top' and learning it all over again, even if you've used older versions of Logic Pro, LPX is a whole new environment with all new and well-designed controls. Lovin' It! Good Job Apple and Good Job David. Highly Recommended.

Just the book I needed to introduce a motivated composer to computer-based music production. The exercises are precisely structured with ample details on what to expect, where to look for various settings, functions and audio controls. My previous experience with music production software was PC-based cubase. There has been a long period since that and the power and consequently the complexities of the programs. Little knowledge transferred from my previous work and so, this book is the "leg up" I desperately needed. Exercises are predicted to take a certain amount of time, so I can establish a lesson plan, according to my time availability. My ultimate goal is to connect my synthesiser/keyboard as well as electric guitars to add sampling capability. I am yet far from that understanding, but already feeling the creative juices flow.

Didn't think twice when I bought this one, as I had good experience from the David's preceding book about Logic Pro 9. I had some worries, though, that much of the information would be redundant. My worries were needless; the new book primarily focuses on all the new functionality provided with Pro X. This being said, it's still a book that covers/brings all the basic knowledge you need to have to work with Logic. These training books are certified by Apple, so they hold a high quality. I specifically like the consistent step-by-step approach. Everything is explained in detail and illustrated by both pictures and easy-to-follow guidelines. The book comes with comprehensive audio and project material, which is great when you need to be hands-on. I bought the ebook/ iPad Kindle version, so had to download the files from the publisher's web site. It went easy and smooth. All in all, I can only recommend this book. It covers all main aspects of music creation with Logic Pro X, without being cluttered or diving too much into depth. It keeps a good balance between essential information and information for general understanding. Lastly, I need to say that this is not for everyone. If you don't wish to read 500 pages while doing your hands-on exercises, I would recommend to use video-based tutorial services like those provided by macProVideo.com instead. They're really great too!

gets the job done. i'm only half-way through the book right now and i feel it is efficiently teaching me all i need to know about logic. My only complaint is that logic requires about 50 GB of hard drive space to download the complete library of loops and instruments, and i opted not to do that until i get an external hard drive. however, the book makes frequent use of these loops and without them you will have to improvise a lot of the time with a limited library. you can still get the point of each lesson, but you might be lost some of the time trying to figure out what the book is referencing when the sounds in your project don't match what is being described.

(Five stars when read with the PDF updates file)Well written and super easy to follow with many great illustrations and simple explanations of some pretty complex topics. Some Logic's areas could probably have books all to themselves so if your expecting a lot of detail on EXS-24 programming or what every plug-in does this one isn't for you. That said a definite must read for anyone starting out, or who's just dabbled on the surface with Logic.IMPORTANT (at least until a new edition is published) if you are using Logic X 10.1 (Update released Jan. 2015) then while you download the various lesson and media files make sure you also download the PDF file with some updated text and illustrations. Nearly every time my system didn't behave as described or my menus/screen looked different it was described in the PDF and was a result of the upgrade.David also runs the logicprohelp website and does answer many of the questions on the forum. Better yet he doesn't deride/patronise those of us who are still learning this stuff or are newbies.

This book is great. It gets you started off on the right foot by explaining Apple loops and how you can use them to quickly put together a song. By the end of the first chapter you will have created a hip hop song just using loops. It gets into audio tracks, the use of the virtual Drummer feature, how to use the various elements of MIDI, the built in plug-ins and much more.Its pretty comprehensive and each chapter builds on the last. So you learn shortcut commands and how to navigate the interface because you continuosly use some of the same methods throughout the exercises. The thing I really like about it is it takes you step by step through the features with hands on exercises and quizes at the end of each chapter. This book is the official training book if you want to take the Logic Pro exam.

I've only gone through the first few chapters but learned so much. I am a beginner with Logic so this was exactly what I needed. I guess this is why it is the Apple Certified Method.The method is lab based so it's like being in a classroom only without the instructor.

About the Author

Lewis Dartnell is a Professor of Science Communication at the University of Westminster. Before that, he completed his biology degree at the University of Oxford and his PhD at UCL, and then worked as the UK Space Agency research fellow at the University of Leicester, studying astrobiology and searching for signs of life on Mars. He has won several awards for his science writing and contributes to the Guardian, The Times, and New Scientist. He is also the author of three books. He lives in London, UK.
