Like one other reviewer I had high expectations about this book because of the high ratings. I know it is for children but I found the prose to be too plain and even a bit ugly. It was troubling as a parent to read about Barbara's selfish overbearing Christian-hating father who "didn't let her go to slumber parties". A bit silly and my husband and I are less than enthusiastic about allowing our children to go to slumber parties because of safety etc...Also the story of Ambrose was a bit troubling. It claims that despite complaints he sold precious church and liturgical items in order to give materially to the poor. That seems to go against the spirit of the Gospel and also I haven't been able to find sources to back that up.I guess I had hoped that the prose would be more poetic (like the Grimms and Anderson) and that the faith would come across more orthodox and bold, lifting the intended audience (children) up to the Greatness of the Saints, not dumbing the lives of the Saints down into the banality of the world of man.

These saint stories are enjoyable and my three year old looks forward to them every night. The stories include fictitious parts and some silly modern elements, but it is done lovingly so. I much prefer these stories over some other offerings which are dry, "just the facts, mam" style.J.M.J.

This book (and its sequel) are wonderful stories about actual heroes. I love that the author chose to tell the legendary versions of the stories, rather than aiming for "what actually happened". There are standard fairy-tale embellishments, the occasional anacronism, and some details changes to appeal a bit more to children - all in a very "storyteller" style. The illustrations are simple but clear drawings; there is at least one per story. The stories are a good length.I also love the "real" feeling of these tales. Next to the trite "be friends, share, play nice" stories for children that abound in pop culture, these stories feel deep and inspiring. They also can be "gritty", as many of the saints depicted died for their faith. And yes, I devoured all the stories myself, on my commute home from work. Even adults will appreciate these tales!

This book had many interesting saints in it and is clearly well-intentioned but the anachronistic and absurdly childish language and metaphors ruin the tone and historicity of it. I don't mind simplicity but this feels cheapening. We jumped ship halfway through and picked a new collection.

Excellent series of books with short, engaging, readable chapters on some familiar AND less-well-known saints. Works well either as a read-aloud or individual silent reading. Definitely a valuable purchase for the shelves of our Catholic homeschool library!

odd selection of stories, odd voice. (from someone who collects lives of Saints and regularly reads them to my children).

I like this book, nice stories. Although I do need to preview the stories, as I'm reading them to a four year old and some saints had some gory things happen to them, but as she gets older, that won't be an issue. And my four year old's complaint was that the pictures were not colored (but she was happy to color them in with her crayons).

You know it's a great book, about saints, when your kid reads it on their own for fun!Would recommend to friend.
