I am all for teaching my children about the "real" world, but I think it's highly unnecessary to include the fact that Larry Bird's father killed himself in an EASY READER book. My second grader doesn't even know that's a THING! They could've gotten that point across in a more age appropriate manner. Not impressed.
I am a volunteer reading tutor. My student (Billy) is very interested in sports and his goal is to be able to read the sports page of the newspaper. I use a Kindle reader because my student has impaired vision and being able to enlarge the print assists him.This book is well written and goes well beyond basketball as written in the sports pages. It goes into the lives and motivations of the players featured. Billy is fascinated by it and that encourages me to try harder to help him. It also appropriately discusses the uphill climb basketball players endured--including black players.Well done.
I bought this book to use as a read-a-loud in my classroom and my students loved it! This is a great book to use when wanting to capture your student's attention, while teaching them about craft and informational texts. I recommend!
