Turning Heads: Portraits of Grace, Inspiration, and Possibilities

From Publishers Weekly

The spark for this collection of gorgeous and inspiring photographs of women who've become bald from chemotherapy was film and television writer Hunsicker's initial reaction to her own cancer diagnosis: the fear of becoming bald trumped her fears of mere death. The resulting book is powerful medicine, and not just for women undergoing cancer treatment. Shot by 59 leading photographers, such as Duane Michals, the book features women of all shapes, sizes, colors and nationalities, and they illustrate an important point: their subjects' distinctive talents, interests, identities and personalities. In these bold and imaginative photos, a Florida Supreme Court Justice presides over a court session, a designer lounges astride an elephant in fuchsia formal wear, a doctor's face grins from the center of a rising moon. Short statements accompanying the photographs are equally eloquent. Model/writer Sharon Fryda Blynn describes overhearing three young men making fun of her during a commuter train ride. As they exit, one of them says, "God forgive me if this woman has cancer." She tells him and witnesses his shame. "I was thinking," she writes, "just for that brief second, I pushed a button... so that... the next time they see a bald woman, they might... smile and say, 'You look beautiful today,' and make her feel better." Photos of cancer survivors showing off their bald or very short hair after having lost their hair with smiles, friends, family, or alone. Cancer has not defeated them or their spirit. There is a short message from each woman of her observations and opinion about cancer and her life. I found them to be inspirational, thoughtful, and / or amusing. This is not a one-size-fits-all book. These ladies have a range of ages and stories. There is something for most people here.I found the sense of self-acceptance that these women gained was what stood out for me. It was no longer about a good hair day or their weight or a myriad of other things that they realized just didn't matter after having cancer. It's short, simple, and to the point.I started to read it when I 1-clicked it last year, but stopped. I had forgotten that I had it until I saw it in my Goodreads listed as yet not finished today. I'm glad that I noticed it and finally read it today. Worth it.

I have just two simple words to share with author Jackson Hunsicker for her efforts in creating this book. Thank You!I know that the author put herself at great financial risk to create this book and I hope she now is recovering all of her expenses and then some. I hope you make millions Jackson. This book was just what I needed. I found it first in my oncologist's office and then I bought myself a copy and then I bought my aunt a copy and then my neighbors came by and took my copy for friends of theirs. Everybody knows somebody who's had a cancer diagnosis.Every woman diagnosed is now experiencing one of her most vulnerable moments--a diagnosis of cancer quite possibly steals your future, frightens you beyond believe, and its harsh treatments rob you of your beauty, your pride--your hair. But that just simply isn't true. Many cancers are cured. The fear eventually wanes. And the hair will grow back. But in the meantime, being bald is beautiful. Witness the perfect scalp, the shape and character of the head, the prominence of the eyes and the lips, and admire those cheekbones. Women who don't have hair have nothing to fear for they are all experiencing a new level of beauty and this book with its glorious portraits is affirmation.I met a woman this past summer. My hair was coming back. Her's was still gone. She was hiding beneath an ugly wig. I encouraged her to remove her wig. "Oh, look how beautiful you are," I told her. And her smile radiated. We woman, we're so much more than just a head of hair, we're strong, vibrant, radiant creatures and our hair is just that, hair.Jackson Hunsicker THANK YOU so much for making me proud to go bald (I paid $600 for my wig. The insurance wouldn't reimburse it. I never wore it. Anybody want it?)Beth Py-Lieberman

I think Jackson Hunsiker gave the world an extraordinary gift. She worke to find women of many races, ages, and walks of life, located superb and well-known photographers to volunteer their time, and matched and arranged for the photos to be taken. The quality of the photos is extraordinary. I've read and reread the book many times -- looking at the photos, reading the women's statements and the photographers' notes about their experience. I've given it as gifts to my doctors (I'm a breast cancer survivor) with the hope that they will share it with their patients, to my rabbi who had breast cancer, to friends and family members. One friend, a retired oncology nurse, takes it to work with her to share with her patients. Another friend has stockpiled a number of copies, because she wants it on hand to give to any friend who develops cancer.

What a gorgeous inspiration. The women portrayed are not professional models, and yet each one is beautiful and shines with her own inner essence and energy. The photographers' work is exquisite and imaginative. I love good pictures and each one in THPGIP stands on its own. The dark subtext of cancer is overwhelmed by the power of the soul, the will and the sublimity of all these radiant ladies.

Wonderful book - inspiring.

Depending on the nature of the person...this is a great book. My friend is so optimistic that it was a winner with her. I have another friend with cancer that it would not be appropriate for. It is perfect for some cancer patients. The women in the photographs are BEAUTIFUL, brave & strong women. I was truly inspired. You just need to knwo the recepient well.

I gave this book to my sister in law who is currently going through Chemotherapy. I loved the beauty and strength in each of the women pictured in the book and hoped she would see herself in these powerful women. She loved the book and even bought 3 copies to give as gifts to friends who are cancer survivors. Wonderful words of wisdom and strengh accompany each beautiful womans picture. It is a book long over due!!I would highly reccomend this book for anyone who has gone through chemo and lost their hair, it is a reminder that we are not defined by our hair but by our spirit.

This is a lovely gift for someone who is battling cancer and has gone through the trauma of losing their hair. Inspirational stories and beautiful photography make this book very positive. Part of proceeds go to cancer research.
